Ok,
I have a recurring problem that won't go away with windows automatic updates. Here is what it says:

Automatic Updates has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
Error Signture:

I have no idea what is the matter. I either send error report or don't and it just pops up again. I have turned automatic updates off in order to try to correct this, but it doesn't matter. Debug doesn't do anything either. Anyone know what could be wrong?

Your log is basically clean. There are some entries that need to be remvoed, but only for cleanup purposes. THere is noting in the log to suggest the error you are getting with Windows Updates.

Try checking the Microsoft Knowledge Base and see if this is a known error:

Also, I will ask one of the other Admins to take a look at this thread and see if he has any more information.


Before we begin, please be sure that HiJackThis is in its own folder. This will allow us to use backups to restore entries if necessary. Please do not put HiJackThis in a temporary folder, or on the Desktop. I suggest using 'c:\program files\hijackthis\' or C:\HiJackThis\, but any name you choose is fine.

That file info you posted is the one sent to Microsoft (if allowed) when you have an error.
To turn off the 'Error Reporting' ...
Start > Run > 'services.msc > OK ...
Scroll down the list to Error Reporting > Right Click > Properties > Startup Type > Manual or Disabled.
Service Status > Stop


supposedly deleting; cpuinf32.dll will fix it too. But do so at your own risk.

Yes, I have gone to try it manually, but whenever I get to the site, the error message pops up (just that site, btw). When I try to actually find an update, the browser gets stuck and cannot find anything or download anything.

I don't think you have that trojan.

I spent a couple hours last night researching your error.
I found several others who have the error but no definitive information on a fix.

I just tried it from another angle and found something.

esent.dll is handling your database. One person got an error when trying to manually update. And you cannot manually update either.

One suggestion is to delete your Temporary internet Files. If that doesn't work:

Follow the directions to rebuild your SoftwareDistribution folder.

See if that does anything.

EDIT: This may not be the problem, but it is something to try.

Well, I am flattered that you spent a few hours trying to figure this out! I really appreciate it.

Anyways, I am following the instructions symantec gives in order to get rid of the trojan, just in case I have it. I think that I may, because I just got another error, which said that the there was a memory error with the WUAUCLT.EXE program. That program was mentioned on the site for removing this trojan.

However, I will try your fix after this doesn't work. Thanks.

It didn't add the entry to the runkey in your case. However, if it has replaced the real file you would have a problem accessing Windows Updates. Let us know how you do.

I really did not think you had that trojan either..just for all the reasons Mosaic1 and I feel it is not making a lot of sense..but I too did some investigating..and found some people who had used Kazaa and some other P2P proggies in the past..also were getting some weird stuff just like yours..so I wanted you to take a look at it and see if any of it made sense...since the hijackthis log shows us alot..but we do not know what other programs you might have had installed at one time..so it is a process of elimination..for this strange problem.

wuauclt.exe is the Windows Auto Updates executable. Have you turned the service back on?

What was the last error it gave? And what were you doing at the time it happened?

Even if not a trojan if you have file corruption that may cause a problem.

Also, when using Windows Update, turn off your AV scanner. Turn it off during any installs too. Then turn it back on immediately.

Ok, it didn't find the trojan, so i am trying your way. However, when I try to change teh Softwaredistribution folder name, it says that access is denied. I am the administrator, why would it be doing that?

BTW, the wuauclt.exe error box just appeared (windows update is turned off) and it says " the instruction at 0x606cf5a1 referenced memory at 0x18830604"

Hmm..is your system restore turned Off by any chance ?


As you may know, Sys Restore is invoked just before making updates.
Check on your Services. Insure System Restore service is not disabled.

If you have stopped the service? Be sure it is really stopped and then try again.

Or Maybe there is an ownership issue with the folder. I take it you have the NTFS files system?

Finally, if no joy anywhere else, you migh want to go to Start>Run and type

sfc /scannow
Press enter

This will check you protected files for corruptoin and replace any which are problematic.

I think that renaming the softwaredistribution folder might have done it! I am downloading the latest updates as of now. I will post a hjt log just for good measure, and will keep you guys updated on error messages and the such. Thank you very much.

Good news. Windows Updates problems can be difficult at times. Glad you got it sorted.

sfc/scannow

You need a space in that command after sfc and before the slash.

sfc /scannow

As for your other startups, some are not needed, but nothing is awful.
