Hello,

When I turn on my computer some sort of web browser appears to load on my desktop. There's a black background with the words, "Warning You're in Danger" on it. The computer has also been freezing up constantly, showing me a blue screen that doesn't let me out of it. I've downloaded and run adaware, spybot, and a^2. They'll make things a little better for a few minutes, but the problems quickly return. My computer has also tried to send emails out to people I don't know and is generally making my life hell. I'm a computer novice (if that's wasn't obvious already!)--any help is VERY welcome.

First:
I recommend that you uninstall P2P Networking through Add/Remove Programs.

If/when asked whether you also want to remove Altnet components, say 'Yes'.

P2P Networking is a totally useless Kazaa add-on, and it's been reported to be responsible for serious system slowdowns.

Subsequently remove the P2P Networking folder in C:\Windows\System32, if still there.

Second:
Before we begin, please be sure that HiJackThis is in its own folder. This will allow us to use backups to restore entries if necessary. Please do not put HiJackThis in a temporary folder, or on the Desktop. I suggest using 'C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\' or C:\HiJackThis\, but any name you choose is fine.

Reboot in Safe Mode* and run HiJackThis. <-- IMPORTANT

Check the following items in HijackThis.
(note: If any R* items do not appear in Safe Mode, re-run HiJackThis in Normal Mode and remove them after you finish removing these items.)

Also, uncheck the boxes for hiding known file extensions and hiding protected operating system files. We want to see it all. When we finish here, it would be a good idea to rehide the protected operating system files but leave the rest to be shown.

Reboot in normal mode

Third:
Download DelDomains.inf from here:

Right-click on the deldomains.inf file and select 'Install'

When its finished your IE Zones wil lbe reset. That will make it necessary to re-install protection using SpywareBlaster and to re-install IE/Spyads, if you use them.

Fourth:
Open Display in Control Panel
Click the Desktop Tab
Click the Customize Desktop button.
Click the Web Tab.

On the list, highlight any items you did not create yourself and click remove

Look for the Lock Desktop Items checkbox on this same page and uncheck it.
Press OK

Last:
Run HiJackThis again and post a new log in this thread.

Hello,

I could not find and thus remove P2P Networking through the Add/ Remove Programs feature. I did remove its folder in C:\Windows\System 32, though.

As well, I could not find C:\Windows\System32\mshelp32.exe.

I was able to find C:\Windows\System32\drct16.dll, but when I went to delete it, it said I was unable to because the file was in use by another application.

Aside from this, I was able to follow all suggested steps.

Something keeps trying to install something called Security iGuard, which really gives my computer a hard time and my computer freezes frequently.

Further advice is much appreciated (I'll be quicker to respond in the future--I was away for the weekend).

First:
Download Killbox from here: http://www.downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.zip

Reboot in Safe Mode

This will take a little bit to do so keep track and dont miss any files.

Open Killbox, click the option 'Delete on Reboot'

Enter (using Copy and Paste) the names of the files to delete in the box 'Full Path of File to Delete'

Here is the first entry:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\drct16.dll

Click the red X, Say yes to the message box that comes up, then say No to the next box asking you to reboot.

This is important, coz if you reboot before you are finished entering all the files, you will have to start over again.

Do the same for this entire list (You have already done the first one)
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\drct16.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\wldr.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\spoolsrv32.exe

Ok so a recap of this

1.)Copy a path & file (whole line) from the list here, and paste it to the first line(of killbox)
2.)Click the Red X for each file you enter
3.)Say "Yes" to first message, and "No" to reboot now(next message)
4.)Repeat for the entire list

Reboot in Normal Mode

Second:
Before we begin, please be sure that HiJackThis is in its own folder. This will allow us to use backups to restore entries if necessary. Please do not put HiJackThis in a temporary folder, or on the Desktop. I suggest using 'c:\program files\hijackthis\' or C:\HiJackThis\, but any name you choose is fine.

Hello,

I followed the instructions as best I could. After running HiJackThis, I was unable to find the following two items:

1. 04-HKLM\..\RunOnce: [Srv 32 spool service]...
2. 04-HKCU\ " " " "

I deleted everything else I was instructed to.

I noticed that there are a couple of iGuard.exe items in the log below and I don't know how to get them out. What next steps are appropriate?

I should add that my computer is working MUCH better now!

Before we begin, please be sure that HiJackThis is in its own folder. This will allow us to use backups to restore entries if necessary. Please do not put HiJackThis in a temporary folder, or on the Desktop. I suggest using 'C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\' or C:\HiJackThis\, but any name you choose is fine.

Reboot in Safe Mode* and run HiJackThis. <-- IMPORTANT

Check the following items in HijackThis.
(note: If any R* items do not appear in Safe Mode, re-run HiJackThis in Normal Mode and remove them after you finish removing these items.)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Security iGuard] C:\Program Files\Security iGuard\Security iGuard.exe

Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked.

While still in Safe Mode*, delete the following: (you may need to show hidden files**)
(Files specified without a full path will be lcoated in C:\Windows\ or C:\Windows\System32\)
C:\Program Files\Security iGuard\ <-- delete entire folder

Also, uncheck the boxes for hiding known file extensions and hiding protected operating system files. We want to see it all. When we finish here, it would be a good idea to rehide the protected operating system files but leave the rest to be shown.

Reboot in normal mode

Run HiJackThis again and post a new log in this thread.
