My internet speed is very, very unhappy. It has gone from a slow but do-able 40 kbps (on dial-up) down to 115,200 bps. We have no choice but to use dial-up, but have had other computers able to go much, much faster, even without the use of an accelerator. The PC itself is also much slower, taking programs such as QuickBooks several minutes to open. The beginnings seemed to be after the replacement of a surge-damaged modem.

First:
You say "It has gone from a slow but do-able 40 kbps (on dial-up) down to 115,200 bps"

Actually 115,200 is almost 3 times the speed of 40kbps, but is also unobtainable. The most you can get from a 56k modem is 53k. The 115,200 is a modem setting, nothing more.

Note that compression (usually defaulted) may increase the apparent speed but the actual rate will not exceed 53k.

Your log is clean, for the most part, and I suspect part of your problem is from temporary files and fragmentation. Clean all the temp files and folders (info later) and the defrag the hard drive.


Second:
Before we begin, please be sure that HiJackThis is in its own folder. This will allow us to use backups to restore entries if necessary. Please do not put HiJackThis in a temporary folder, or on the Desktop. I suggest using 'c:\program files\hijackthis\' or C:\HiJackThis\, but any name you choose is fine.

Close all open windows except HiJackThis and press 'Fix Checked'.

Reboot.
Run HiJackThis again and post a new log in this thread.


Third:
A very important step to cleaning out adware or a virus is to clear temporary files.

Double Click My Computer (WinXP: Navigate to Start --->My Computer)

You will see an icon representing your harddrive (most likely C: Drive) Right Click on the hard drive icon and click Properties at the
bottom of the fly out window. One the very first tab (General) you will see a button labeled "Disk Cleanup"...click that button.
Make sure the following are checked:
Downloaded Program Files
Temporary Internet Files and
Recycle Bin
Click OK and Disk Cleanup will delete those files for you.


It would also be a good idea to clear your Internet Cookies.
These directions are for Internet Explorer.
Click Tools along the top of Internet Explorer and choose Internet Options
On the General Tab press Delete Cookies.

Your temporary files are now cleared.
Perform this action periodically to keep your computer running at peak performance

I delete cookies & internet files often (it is, however, my mom's computer), and less than 10 GB out of 144 are being used on this computer. I will defragment htis evening, also. We also have a mouse lag... about every 5 seconds the mouse pauses for 1. Very random problems. As for the internet speed, I was looking for some way to communicate how slow it is, and unknowingly used a useless number. Oh, well. Let's just say it is stab a needle in your eye painfully slow. Thanks anyway!

First:
Download DLLCompare from here:
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/DllCompare.exe

Copy the program to its own folder and double click on it.
Press the 'Run Locate.com' button

That should finish quickly, then:
Press the 'Compare' button.

That will run for a while longer.

When it is finished, press the 'Make A Log of What was Found' button
and post the log in this thread.

Press 'Exit' to quit program.

Please download the following Zip archive:

Both reports are negative.

SInce you are dialup, it is possible that your connection has degraded (thru no fault of yours) and you may not be getting more than 20-25kps speeds.

Not much you can do about that other than call your ISP and ask them to check the line.
