My Browser seems to have been hacked as when I go to the link below I get the following:

Your browser:
nutscrape/9.0 (cp/m; 8-bit)

Active Scripting enabled

http://www.mobile2market.net/SignUp1.asp

I also cannot update spybot - search and destroy for some reason and also windows update will not work either.
LoPhatPhuud
There is nothing wrong with your system. That site appears to be phishing sit; avoid it all costs. In FireFox I got repeated warnings for invalid site certificate.

The site has been reported to the ISP and to MS for review.

phishing sit?

What does that mean?

So do you have any idea why I can't use windows update or that whenever I try to login to hotmail it tells me i'm not using IE and need to download the latest version even though i'm running the latest version. It also won't let me attach any files to a hotmail message.

And how do I get rid of this nutscrape? I take it something has been changed in my registry, although I checked my internet settings on the local machine and they are set to default.

Below is what I get if I try to login to hotmail:

--------------------------------
Web Browser Software Limitations

Your Current Software May Limit Your Ability to Use Hotmail

You are using a web browser that Hotmail does not support. If you continue to use your current browser software we cannot guarantee that Hotmail will work correctly for you.

We recommend that you upgrade your web browsing software and invite you to download Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.

----------------------------------

Thanks for your help.

*bump*

anyone got any ideas?

This is what you said in your first post:
" I seem to be having internet problems and wondered if someone could take a look at this log file and help me out. "

Now you say:
"So do you have any idea why I can't use windows update or that whenever I try to login to hotmail it tells me i'm not using IE and need to download the latest version even though i'm running the latest version. It also won't let me attach any files to a hotmail message."

It would have helped if you had given us more information to begin with.

Go here: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/IEFIX.htm

Download, install and run IEfix then let me know the results. Also run HiJackThis again and post a new log in this thread.

Our first task is to get IE runing properly, then we can tackle the rest.
johnnymac58
I ran the IE fix program but still have the same problems. I'm now on IE5 instead of 6 as it has obviously been reinstalled. I'll download IE6 off the microsoft site and reinstall it for now.

I still cannot use windows update or hotmail and my browser is still coming up as nutscrape.

Could it be a problem at the server in here? All the machines seem to have their browsers changed. Should I get a log file from the server and post it up?

Here is my log file now:

You have this runing but I do not see where it is loading from:
C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\~e5d141.tmp

First:
Hoster Instructions:

=== Begin Hosts File Reset ===
1.Download the Hoster from here:
http://members.aol.com/toadbee/hoster.zip
2. Install the program and run it.
3. Press 'Restore Original Hosts' and press 'OK'
4. Exit Program.

Note: This program also has a Hosts file backup facility that may want to use if you have added custom entries to the Hosts file.

Second:

Please download the following Zip archive:
http://www.silentrunners.org/Silent%20Runners.zip

Unzip the archive to your desktop and double click on the VBS file.
(If your AntiVirus alerts, allow the script to run.

Once finished, the script will save a Notepad document to your Desktop.

Copy and paste the contents of that text file in this thread.

First:
Download Killbox from here: http://www.downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.zip

Reboot in Safe Mode

This will take a little bit to do so keep track and dont miss any files.

Open Killbox, click the option Delete on Reboot

You'll see the path to the filename appear in the bottom box.

copy & paste 1 at a time starting.

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\~e5d141.tmp

into the top box

Click the red X, Say yes to the message box that comes up, then say No to the next box asking you to reboot.

This is important, coz if you reboot before you are finished entering all the files, you will have to start over again.

Do the same for this entire list (You have already done the first one)

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\~e5d141.tmp

Ok so a recap of this

1.)Copy a path & file (whole line) from the list here, and paste it to the first line(of killbox)
2.)Click the Red X for each file you enter
3.)Say "Yes" to first message, and "No" to reboot now(next message)
4.)Repeat for the entire list

5.)Reboot.

Second:

Run HiJackThis again and post a new log in this thread.

Hmmm, I get no path to the filename or indeed a bottom box.

And where is the list of files located?

Sorry, you must think I am a complete retard.

Here is a screenshot of killbox after i select the options you requested:

LoPhatPhuud
There is only one file to delete:
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\~e5d141.tmp

Copy and paste that into the box labelled 'Full Path of File to Delete'

Then press the red 'X'.

Reboot and its done.
johnnymac58
I still seem to be getting the same problems. You think I should run all these tests on the main server?

The message from Hotmail indiciates that you do not have a supported browser installed when we know you do. The UA information shows it is hacked as well. We can fix that with a registry update but I would like to know if something is hiding.

I am going to ask someone else to take a look at this thread and I will get back to you. Hopefully it should not take too long.
johnnymac58
Thanks very much for all your help and patience.

Please copy the text in the box below to Notepad and save it to your desktop as reginfo.bat.
CODE
regedit /e reginfo.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\User Agent"
start notepad.exe reginfo.txt
exit

Double-click on the reginfo.bat file, and it will run and create a text document on your desktop which will open in Notepad.

Copy and paste the contents of that entire file in this thread.

Try this one.

Go to Start >Run and type regedit. Press enter.

Navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings

Highlight Internet Settings in the left pane.

Look in the right pane for this entry:
User Agent

What does it say the data is for that? You can just double click on User Agent and then copy what is highklighted in the box. Don't change anything yet, though.

It's coming up saying everything is as it should be.

But I still get told i'm using this nutscrape browser.

crying.gif
Mosaic1
I bet that's annoying.

Let's try a general Registry search for nutscrape.

Here's a very nice script to help you out.

Download it and run it. When it starts, you will be prompted to enter a search phrase. Do that enter nutscrape and go have a cup of coffee.
When you get back, a message box will be there on the desktop.Say yes to open the results. Copy and paste the contents into a reply here. Once you close that file, it will be deleted, so please save it as results.txt. We may need it again.

Here's that link:
http://www.billsway.com/vbspage/
Find Registry Search Tool And download it.
johnnymac58
Search completed in 14 seconds.

No instances of "nutscrape" found.

---------------------------------------------------

da**, this is a sneaky one!
Mosaic1
You are on a proxy server?

Also, go to the IE toolbar and click Help.

Go to about Internet Explorer and click.

What does it say for the Cipher Strength there?
johnnymac58
Cipher strength = 128 bit

And yes, i'm on a proxy server.

May be an issue with the server itself?
Mosaic1
When exactly did this start happening? And what changes had you made, if any right before it did.

128 bit is the correct encryption.
Mosaic1
Have a look at this list by MVP Mike Burgess. These are some of the causes of this particular error message. Not the Nutscrape.

Several of these are known to cause problems:
1) Zone Alarm Pro [Private Header Info - enabled]
Turn off "Ad Blocking" and "Cookie Control" in ZAP (Privacy Advisor)

2) Symantec [Enable Browser Privacy - enabled]
Active Content - "Allow All Script To Execute"

3) Any "ad blocking" software that blocks "http_referer"
or contains entries that are blocking access to the desired site.

4) HOSTS file that contains entries that are blocking access to the desired

128 bit is the correct encryption.

It started happening when we had our new server installed, maybe a month or so ago. No changes had been made to my system in particular.

We have upgraded to Microsoft Small Business Server and Microsoft Exchange for our e-mails. Those were the only changes really.
Mosaic1
How many computers are involved and do they all have this problem?
johnnymac58
Yes, a few of them seem to have this problem.

Should I run some tests on the main server?
Mosaic1
Yes. See what happens. I am not familiar with Server Setups, but if this is not just one machine and it happened just after a change, that change usually is suspect.
johnnymac58
Will I run all the tests that have been done on my machine?
LoPhatPhuud
You can check the server but understand, you are on your own. The scope of this issue has gone beyond what we normally deal with in this forum.

We know your system is clean and so, I assume, are the others experiencing the same issue. Since it started with a server modification, I suggest any solution start here also.
Perhaps refer this to the system administator for resolution.

In any event, we are closing this thread now for future support on this issue.
