Would like a check on this log. The last #23 in the log google's as a virus. McAfee doesn't find it, but find it 3 places in the registry. Is it safe to delete it from there, as should not be in system32

If you say it is ok to delete SYSTEM.EXE I would only delete the string value as that is a legitimate folder isn't it?

Before we begin, please be sure that HiJackThis is in its own folder. This will allow us to use backups to restore entries if necessary. Please do not put HiJackThis in a temporary folder, or on the Desktop. I suggest using 'C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\' or C:\HiJackThis\, but any name you choose is fine.

Reboot in Safe Mode* and run HiJackThis. <-- IMPORTANT

Check the following items in HijackThis.
(note: If any R* items do not appear in Safe Mode, re-run HiJackThis in Normal Mode and remove them after you finish removing these items.)

Also, uncheck the boxes for hiding known file extensions and hiding protected operating system files. We want to see it all. When we finish here, it would be a good idea to rehide the protected operating system files but leave the rest to be shown.

Reboot in normal mode

Run HiJackThis again and post a new log in this thread.

First:
Before we begin, please be sure that HiJackThis is in its own folder. This will allow us to use backups to restore entries if necessary. Please do not put HiJackThis in a temporary folder, or on the Desktop. I suggest using 'c:\program files\hijackthis\' or C:\HiJackThis\, but any name you choose is fine.

Check the following items in HiJackThis:
O23 - Service: SCA (Service Control Application) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\System32\SYSTEM.EXE (file missing)

Close all open windows except HiJackThis and press 'Fix Checked'.

Reboot.
Run HiJackThis again and post a new log in this thread.


Second:
Start HiJackThis version 199.1 or later)

Press 'Config' -> 'Misc Tools' -> 'Open ADS Spy...'

Be sure the first two boxes are checked and the third is not checked

Press 'Scan'

When finished, press 'Save Log'

Copy the log and post it in this thread.

DO this:

Start -> run -> services.msc

Look for: SCA (Service Control Application)

Right Click on it and select 'Properties'

Make sure Startup Type is 'Disabled'

If not, change it then press OK,

The last log was clean so this should do it.

I am up to page 22 in the thread about Lavasoft. I think I will wait till tomorow and go to the last post and see what is happening..I think there is getting to be to much duplicate posts about the same question with no real answers yet. Also followed the post in Wilder's and see they are taking the wait and see attitude.

I have taken a 'wat-and-see[ attitude as well. But for me that is whether I will again recommend AdAware. Right now I won't. I'll mention it, but also that article so that the members I help can decide for themselves.

Now that MSAS will be free it is my #1 choice. While independent as Gian, it got the highest ratings by Eric Howes and his testing. Nothing has changed so far to affect that rating. I realize a lot of people may not like MS itself, but this product is good and until that changes, I will recommend it.

Ok I did what you said and ran a HJT scan and the offending #23 doesn't show up now.
