My son's PC keeps being infected no matter what I do to clean it.

I've run Adaware, Spybot and AVG - all are now clean. I also ran Panda Active Scan to be on the safe side. Scanning hard drives showed up clean. However scanning email got so far through the scan and then thw window closed therefore aborting the scan. I then tried a My Computer scan and the same thing happened.

Is something lurking somewhere that is forcing this shutdown?

First:
I recommend you use Add/Remove Programs to uninstall Messenger Plus. While the program itself contains no spyware/malware, many systems using it eventually end up with LOP and other exploits infecting the computer. In fact, one of the optional programs you can install along with MP3 is LOP!!!


Second:
Before we begin, please be sure that HiJackThis is in its own folder. This will allow us to use backups to restore entries if necessary. Please do not put HiJackThis in a temporary folder, or on the Desktop. I suggest using 'C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\' or C:\HiJackThis\, but any name you choose is fine.

Reboot in Safe Mode* and run HiJackThis. <-- IMPORTANT

Check the following items in HijackThis.
(note: If any R* items do not appear in Safe Mode, re-run HiJackThis in Normal Mode and remove them after you finish removing these items.)

Also, uncheck the boxes for hiding known file extensions and hiding protected operating system files. We want to see it all. When we finish here, it would be a good idea to rehide the protected operating system files but leave the rest to be shown.

Reboot in normal mode

I know about the problems re Messenger Plus since finding out about them a while back. We were very careful this time to avoid installing all the crap such as LOP. Having made sure that none of that got installed, what other problems can arise from having it installed? My son would prefer to keep it as it adds some extra functionality - whatever that is!

Quite franky, the risk exposed by Messenger Plus 3 outweighs any possible benefits. Apart from the LOP installation option, other varied spyware seems to migrate to computers running Messenger Plus 3.

Ask yourself a question, if the writers of the program are willing to allow LOP to be bundled with their product, what other spyware/malware will they allow?

As long as you have MessengerPlus installed, it is not a matter of if you will be infected, but rather, when!

Yes he should and to a degree he does. However when he comes looking for help, as he did, I don't turn him away. Also it may impact on the other two computers in our network.
