Before we begin, please be sure that HiJackThis is in its own folder. This will allow us to use backups to restore entries if necessary. Please do not put HiJackThis in a temporary folder, or on the Desktop. I suggest using 'c:\program files\hijackthis\' or C:\HiJackThis\, but any name you choose is fine.

Here are some simple steps you can take to reduce the chance of infection in the future.

1. Visit Windows Update:
Make sure that you have all the Critical Updates recommended for your operating system and IE. The first defense against infection is a properly patched OS.

2. Adjust your security settings for ActiveX:]
Go to Internet Options/Security/Internet, press 'default level', then OK. Now press "Custom Level."
In the ActiveX section:

Finally, set 'Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to 'Disable'.

5. Install 'Spoofstick"
Spoofstick is a simple browser extension that helps users detect spoofed (fake) websites. This extension is free and installs in Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox.

6. Reset System Restore
If you are using Windows ME or Windows XP, please reset your System Restore. See Windows help for information.

7. Clean Temporary Files and Folders
Double Click My Computer (WinXP: Navigate to Start --->My Computer)
You will see an icon representing your harddrive (most likely C: Drive) Right Click on the hard drive icon and click Properties at the bottom of the fly out window. On the very first tab (General) you will see a button labeled "Disk Cleanup"...click that button.

Make sure the following are checked:
Downloaded Program Files
Temporary Internet Files and
Recycle Bin

Click OK and Disk Cleanup will delete those files for you.

8. Rogue/Suspect Anti-Spyware

Well, I did everything I was supposed to, and according to you guys, I was ok. But! My computer is still acting kind of funky, and I ran a virus check, and it says I still have those 2 trojans! What should I do? -_-

THat's the first time youi have mentioned having a trojan detected by your AV. That may have helped us earlier.

Before we go off chasing pink elephants, what Trojans are you supposedly infected with and where are they located?

I'm sorry I didn't mention it before! I was infected with Trojan bipsy or something like that. I think actually that I was able to get rid of it myself now. They were in my local settings folder (which I couldn't find! I didn't think of looking in the hidden folders at the time...)

Anyway, I had looked up the name of the trojan, and came across this forum. I followed the instructions that were given in the other thread... Sorry again that I didn't mention what my virus scan said.

I do have a different problem though. I have a problem using Disk Cleanup. I try to run it (I used to run it all the time) and now it won't work. I open it and it won't even start searching stuff. I can't do anything with it! It's frustrating, because I don't know how to fix it. It's been like this for a few months now...

You are running Trojan Hunter. Tell me the name of the trojan and the completely path that it is on your PC including the drive folder and file and then i can help you.

AlsoIt is recommended that you do a couple of things after a serious infection.

Just to be sure.

Clear out your Temporary internet files and other temp files. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel >
Internet Options. Under the General tab click the Delete temporary internet files,
choose to delete all Offline content. Clear out Cookies.

Also, go to Start > Find/search > Files or folders > in the named box, type: *.tmp and choose Edit > select all ->
File > delete.

Empty the contents of the C:\Windows\temp folder and C:\temp folder, if you have one.

This one too if Win2K or XP.
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\

Empty the Recycle Bin.

This will result in your having to re-enter passwords at forums, banks, and the like.

A small price to pay if it gets rid of any bad guys.

Flush your restore points in ME and XP, by turning System Restore off and then back on.
This will create a fresh restore point.

Also if you have sunjava installed it's cache should be cleared too.

And make sure you have the latest version if you have sunjava.

Adjust your security settings for ActiveX:
a. Go to Internet Options/Security/Internet, press 'default level', then OK.
Now press "Custom Level."
In the ActiveX section, set/click the options as follows:
Download signed ActiveX controls > prompt
Download unsigned ActiveX controls > disable
Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe > disable
b. In your Restricted Sites Zone set everything that can be to "disable". Set anything that cannot be disabled to "prompt".
c. Never add any site to your Trusted Sites Zone.

I would also recommend, In your own self defense and to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, installing both SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard.

SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard are by JavaCool and both are free programs. SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed and consumes no system resources. SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation and browser hijack attempts. Both have free ongoing updates.
