I am having problems with the homepage hijacker-about:blank. I am currently using Norton Internet Security, Spyware Nuker, and NoAdware, and I still can't seem to get rid of this problem. I have tried disabling system restore, restarting in safe mode, restoring host files, updating virus definitions, running a system scan, and reversing changes to registry. Norton Antivirus will not run in safe mode for some reason, and every time I edit the registry, it just keeps coming back. Please help, I'm going insane!!!!!

Hi garydork,

Open "Add/Remove Programs" in the Control Panel. Select the following items:

• CometCursor Or something like that

and click "Remove" for each of them.

Download Intermute's CoolWebShredder
Extract CWShredder to its own folder. Restart in Safe Mode (How do I Safe Boot my computer?) and run the program.

Be sure all open windows are closed. Click the "Fix ->" button.

Make sure you let it fix all CWS Remnants.

Open Internet Explorer and run the following online virusscans:

Housecall Anti Virus Panda Anti Virus

Download Ad-aware SE and update it (the Globe icon, then Connect). Then click on "Perform Full System Scan". Uncheck "Search for negligible risk entries" and click on "Next". Eliminate all that Ad-aware finds.

Restart your computer after cleaning with Ad-aware and scan again. Repeat the process until no further items are found as bad.

Run HijackThis, click on "Scan" and check the boxes next to all these items.

This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. Read the article behind this link "How did I get infected". If you don't already have them, you need an antivirus that is updated, a good firewall for example Kerio Personal Firewall or ZoneLabs Zone Alarm, a spyware blocker like SpywareBlaster and also IE-Spyads and spyware detection (Ad-aware SE and SpyBot S+D). All of these have good free versions available... be very cautious about any security software that advertises in popups or other intrusive ways, they are not only usually useless, but also often have malware in them....

Instead of Internet Explorer, use a different browser like Opera, Mozilla or Firefox.

Last, but not least, you need to keep Windows and Internet Explorer up to date by getting all the latest security patches that protects your computer.

This can be accessed by going to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and following the prompts. If you are running Windows XP get updated to SP-2

Alright, after I sent you the clean log, I have been attacked by the infamous about:blank hijacker all over again. I am now using Norton Internet Security with Norton Antivirus, Ad-Aware SE, Spy Subtract with CWShredder, Spyware Blaster, Spyware Guard, NoAdware, and Spyware Nuker. After installing Spyware Guard and resetting my homepage, I was prompted that my homepage was being changed to about:blank again. Spyware Guard stopped the change to my homepage, and I think that I was able to get my system cleaned out again, but I'd appreciate your opinion on that. Also, do you think I have enough protection now? And why is this about:blank crap still trying to get me? Please help, I'd love to put the Xanax back in the medicine cabinet!!!!!!

Your log is clean...I myself use IE-SpyAds as well.That complements Spyware Blaster in dumping an huge amont of sites in the Restricted Zone.

Also, this might help.

One of the best features of Windows XP is the System Restore option, however if a virus infects a computer with this operating system the virus may be accidentally backed up because of this feature. In order to completely remove a virus on these operating systems, you should disable System Restore before cleaning the system, then reenable it after the system is clean.

Follow the instructions below to disable System Restore

IMPORTANT NOTES:
You must be logged in as an Administrator to do this. If you are not logged in as an Administrator, the "System Restore"-tab will not be displayed.
Turning off System Restore will clear out all previous restore points.

To turn off Windows XP System Restore:

NOTE: These instructions assume that you are using the default Windows XP Start Menu and have not changed to the Classic Start menu. To re-enable the default menu, right-click "Start", click "Properties", click "Start menu (not Classic)" and then click "OK".

1. Click "Start".
2. Right-click the "My Computer"-icon, and then click "Properties".
3. Click the "System Restore"-tab.
4. Check "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives".
5. Click "Apply".
6. When turning off "System Restore", the existing restore points will be deleted. Click "Yes" to do this.
7. Click "OK".
8. Proceed with what you need to do; for example, virus removal. When you have finished, restart the computer and follow the instructions in the next section to turn on System Restore.

To turn on Windows XP System Restore:

1. Click "Start".
2. Right-click "My Computer", and then click "Properties".
3. Click the "System Restore"-tab.
4. Uncheck "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives".
5. Click "Apply", and then click "OK".

Hey Bobbi,

I neglected to ask one thing in my last message. With Service Pack 2 and all the security updates, why is Internet Explorer so vulnerable? Also, if I need to use another browser, is my Yahoo browser good enough? If not, are there any free browsers that are secure? If you suggest I use IE-SpyAds, where can I get it? I truly appreciate all your help, and wish that I had known about all the free software sooner. I have spent way too much money on programs that didn't do near as much good as the free stuff. Thanks again!!!!!!

Microsoft doesn't have a good track record at fixing security stuff, and Internet Explorer is the only browser that uses ActiveX. Therefore Internet Explorer is vulnerable. The Yahoo Browser is a re- packaged Internet Explorer, thus unsafe.

Here is my new hijack this log. Please tell me, is there actually any software out there that can keep this about:blank menace out of my system? Am I just going to have to keep fighting with it? At first, spyware guard seemed to be keeping it in check, but I am just being prompted every thirty seconds and notified of changes being made to my system. I click on restore old value, and remove BHO, but some how this thing has found a way around all the software I have downloaded. I have not yet found another browser, but that is where I'm going now. Please, I am at my wits end with this thing, show me the way!!!!

I have already given you three alternatives to Internet Explorer (Opera, Firefox and Mozilla). If you use those, it is less likely you will be hijacked. As with IE-SpyAds, click the links i gave earlier.

Run HijackThis, click on "Scan" and check the boxes next to all these items.

Show hidden files. How do I show hidden files?

Delete the following files in red (it could be that they are deleted already):

This log is clean!

This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. Read the article behind this link "How did I get infected". If you don't already have them, you need an antivirus that is updated, a good firewall for example Kerio Personal Firewall or ZoneLabs Zone Alarm, a spyware blocker like SpywareBlaster and also IE-Spyads and spyware detection (Ad-aware SE and SpyBot S+D). All of these have good free versions available... be very cautious about any security software that advertises in popups or other intrusive ways, they are not only usually useless, but also often have malware in them....

Instead of Internet Explorer, use a different browser like Opera, Mozilla or Firefox.

Last, but not least, you need to keep Windows and Internet Explorer up to date by getting all the latest security patches that protects your computer.

This can be accessed by going to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and following the prompts. If you are running Windows XP get updated to SP-2
