After you helped me get rid of win-eto I thought everything was rosy. Not sure if I re-exposed my system to spyware by visiting dangerous sites or there was some leftover file that mutated but I the system has been taken over again.

Before we begin, please be sure that HiJackThis is in its own folder. This will allow us to use backups to restore entries if necessary. Please do not put HiJackThis in a temporary folder, or on the Desktop. I suggest using 'c:\program files\hijackthis\' or C:\HiJackThis\, but any name you choose is fine.

Reboot in Safe Mode* and run HiJackThis. <-- IMPORTANT

Check the following items in HijackThis.
O3 - Toolbar: Begin2Search.com Bar - {52FE5233-367C-4EFB-BDD7-0BE4D212C107} - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\WINB2S32.DLL (file missing)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Win Server Updt] C:\WINDOWS\wupdt.exe

Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked.

While still in Safe Mode*, delete the following: (you may need to show hidden files**)
C:\WINDOWS\wupdt.exe

**Show Hidden and System files and folders: http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

Also, uncheck the boxes for hiding known file extensions and hiding protected operating system files. We want to see it all. When we finish here, it would be a good idea to rehide the protected operating system files but leave the rest to be shown.

Reboot in normal mode.

HiJackThis version 199.0 is now available.

After fixing and deleting the files per your recommendations I reran HiJack This and the following is the logfile.

Well, evidently there was a problem saving the logfile yesterday. The diskette I used at home gives me a "no format" when I try to read it. I just formatted a new diskette and will have to head back to the house and try this again.

Since I'm here though, I wanted to pass along some other info that might prove helpful in the diagnosis. I had good luck with Spybot and Adaware, or so I thought, in cleaning up a lot of bad spyware files. I recalled that just before the posting on the 28th (my second "infection") I had deleted several groups of files that had been quarantined.

Now, when I try to run Spybot or Adaware I get an error message stating " A required .DLL file, MSASN1.DLL, was not found".

I tried re-loading both programs from the CDRom I had used the first time and had the same problem.

So I am guessing that I've deleted something I shouldn't have. Can you provide some guidance on how to get recovered?

I am running Windows 98 at home. I just purchased Windows XP, but didn't know if installing would help. Does the upgrade need to wait until my system is cleaned up? I held off until I could ask.

The best install of XP is always from a clean system. Backup your data, etc., reforamt the disk (preferrably with NTFS if big enough and install Windows XP.

Also, please check earlier message regarding not being able to run Spybot and Adaware. I think I may have erroneously deleted some file, MSASN1.DLL, or this may be a virus trick message. Not sure.

From what I see, your log is clean. Please check and be sure that the entirer log was copied. Normally it will go through O16 entries for Win98, possibly higher.

(it is a legitimate file)

Let me know if the log as posted was complete or not.

Yes, the logfile as posted was all that HiJack This gave me.

Once I downloaded the msasn1.dll from the website you recommended, and copied it into the Spybot and Adaware directories then I could run those programs. Both found a number of files which were quarantined/fixed/deleted.

However, I still cannot get to the internet. So my browser is still hijacked to some extent.

After running Spybot and Adaware, I rebooted in normal mode and re-ran HiJack This. Following is the logfile. I double checked and while this does end at "04" it is complete as provided by HiJackThis.

Your log is clean.

Inability to connect to the internet is not a sign of of a HiJacker. Think about it for a moment and you will realize why. HiJackers make their money by directing you to specific websites. If you are not on the internet, they make nothing!

I would suspect one of two problems. Either a modem to TCP/IP issue. You can check your modem out using hte Modem Control Panel., go to Modem tab, select Properties and then Diagnostics. For the TCP/IP stack, you can download and run Winsockfix from here: http://www.itc.virginia.edu/desktop/centra...D=127&nav=title

It will do no harm if nothing is wrong.
