Hello, I've been annoyed by ads234 for about two months now. I tried scanning with Norton's, Ad-aware, and Spybot, but I'm clueless when it comes to this kind of thing and I don't know what's causing it. Here's a log:

To clean your temp folder, recycle bin, etc..please download this free tool:
CCleaner
It will put a shortcut on your Desktop.
Click on CCleaner to start it. Then click "Run Cleaner".
Then Reboot (Exit).

Now Close all open Windows and browsers (have only HJT open) and click "Fix Checked".


Set Windows to view hidden and system files:
Open the Windows Explorer | Tools | Folder Options - View [tab]:

Scroll down to the "Files and Folders" section.
Select: "Display the contents of system folders".

Scroll down to the "Hidden Files and Folders" section.
Select: "Show hidden files and folders", Ok the prompt
Uncheck: "Hide file extensions for known file types"
Uncheck: "Hide protected operating system files" Ok the Prompt, click Apply

Click the "Apply to all Folders" button. Close Windows Explorer.

Then, reboot to Safe mode
Tap F8 while restarting, and delete these 7 folders in bold:

C:\Program Files\WildTangent\
C:\Program Files\Windows AdControl\
C:\Program Files\Windows ControlAd\
C:\Program Files\WindUpdates\
C:\Program Files\Winad Client\
C:\Program Files\Windows ServeAd\
C:\Program Files\Windows TaskAd\

And these 5 files (if still there):

C:\WINNT\apet.exe
C:\WINNT\fqvn.exe

C:\WINNT\System32\eiepao.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\fdjfocv.exe

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\ootr.exe

Then navigate to the C:\documents and settings\raymond (repeat for all users)\local settings\temp folder and delete all files and folders in it.

Then navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder and delete all files in it.

Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add or Remove Programs "Change or Remove Programs"
and Remove these (if there):

Windows AdControl
Windows ControlAd
WindUpdates
Winad Client
Windows ServeAd
Windows TaskAd

Also look for any other programs that you didn't install, or look suspicious. (If you're not sure post them here).

Then reboot normally.

Re-run an updated AdAware SE and Spybot: Search and Destroy
After the final scan, reboot and please post a new HJT log.

Let's do this part in Safe mode.

Reboot to Safe mode (tap F8 while restarting).

Open Hijackthis, click Scan, then put a check next to the following entries:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows ServeAd] C:\Program Files\Windows ServeAd\WinServAd.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows ControlAd] C:\Program Files\Windows ControlAd\WinCtlAd.exe


Now Close all open Windows (have only HJT open) and click "Fix Checked".

Then, set Windows to view hidden and system files:
Open the Windows Explorer | Tools | Folder Options - View [tab]:

Scroll down to the "Files and Folders" section.
Select: "Display the contents of system folders".

Scroll down to the "Hidden Files and Folders" section.
Select: "Show hidden files and folders", Ok the prompt
Uncheck: "Hide file extensions for known file types"
Uncheck: "Hide protected operating system files" Ok the Prompt, click Apply

Click the "Apply to all Folders" button. Close Windows Explorer.

Then delete these 2 folders:

C:\Program Files\Windows ServeAd\
C:\Program Files\Windows ControlAd\

Then run Ad-aware se, and an updated Norton AntiVirus while still in safe mode.

Then reboot normally, and please post a new HJT log.

Here are some suggestions to clean/protect your PC:

I recommend that you keep AdAware SE and Spybot: Search and Destroy updated, and run them periodically.

Also go to Windows Update to keep up on all the latest security patches that apply to your PC.

Then click Start | Run (type) cleanmgr
Select the following:
1) Temporary Internet Files
2) Recycle Bin
3) Temporary Files

When completed Reboot.

Then I recommend you clean out your System Restore
Doing this will remove all your restore points, and any infections that might be hanging in there.

Click Start > Programs > Accessories > Windows Explorer
Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check the "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives".
Click Apply.
Click Yes to do this.
Click OK.
Then Restart your computer.

After you have restarted, turn System Restore back on:
Click Start.
Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Uncheck the "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives" check box.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Then create a new restore point once you have System Restore back on.
To create a new System Restore Point, click Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore.
When the System Restore Utility opens, click "Create a Restore Point" then click Next.
Enter a name for this Restore Point, and click Create.

SpywareBlaster will block bad ActiveX and malevolent cookies.

IESPYAD puts over 4000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
