I'm periodically encountering the W32.Netsky.P@mm!enc worm and would like to ensure that its source is through mail that is being delivered and not through some infection which already exists on my system. Norton AV is successfully intercepting the worm but I'd really like to pin down where it's coming from.

It usually occurs when I am in MSN Explorer and processing MSN web based mail or are in MSN Settings. I have not encountered it yet in Internet Explorer with Outlook 2003 (also web based mail not pop3).

I have Norton AV and Personal Firewall, SpyBot and Ad-Aware software which are all up to date. I went through the process of turning off system restore, doing a safeboot and running the NAV, SpyBot and Ad-Aware software. I even downloaded Norton's Netsky removal tool and tried it. There were no signs of infection on my system.

I'd like to make sure I've done what I'm supposed to. Also am I being naive in assuming that MSN's web based mail goes through elaborate filtering for malicious code? Norton AV catches the attempt to infect my system when a file creation is attempted in \documents and setting\Arthur\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\MSN\db

The file name is of the form [my MSN account name]-msn.com.17dc which, I think, is one of the many files used to store sent message on MyComputer.

You might want to save this page on your favorites, so you can find it again when you return. You can also click on your name and click on "Find All Posts" to find your thread.

Run HijackThis, click on "Scan" and check the boxes next to all these items.

I did as instructed.

After making the repairs I did a new scan. The log is attached. I noticed that there is a second instace of an "03 - Toolbar: (no name) ..." but did not do anything with it. I'd like to follow a practice of not doing anything I'm not asked to if that's ok. (I'm fairly computer literate but not all that savvy on low level tactics used by malicious software).

The 2nd instance of a toolbar is: O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {ACB1E670-3217-45C4-A021-6B829A8A27CB} - (no file).

I'm also using Regedit to export a copy of the Registry prior to making changes - I assume that if I need to undo any changes I can import the old Registry copy.

Oops... I overlooked that one.

Open "Add/Remove Programs" in the Control Panel. Select the following items:

• Viewpoint Media Player

and click "Remove" for each of them.

Run HijackThis, click on "Scan" and check the boxes next to all these items.

Hi and a very happy holidays to you and yours.

Add/Remove Programs had an entry for "Viewpoint Manager." I removed it. In the course of doing so, Norton Personal Firewall intercepted an attempt by program vmgrremok.exe to contact a DNS server. I blocked it thru the firewall.

The "03 - Toolbar" entry was removed with HighjackThis as instructed. The entry for "HKLM\..\Run [ViewMgr] ..." was already deleted (I assume as a result of the removal of Viewpoint Manager in Add/Remove Programs).

I booted in Safe mode and deleted the \Viewpoint folder from the \Program Files folder. I also went back a little bit on my promise not to do anything on my own initiative. A search of my hard drive revealed a number of configuration and ini files (but no dll or exe files) in a "\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Viewpoint" folder. I removed those files as well. After rebooting in normal mode, I turned on System Restore again.

I haven't had any Norton AV intercepts of the W32.Netsky.P worm for about two days in a row now and I'm using my system regularly. That's very encouraging and your help is greatly appreciated.

Have you uninstalled/deleted McAfee? Somehow McAfee's update routines are running from the Recycle Bin?

Empty your Recycle Bin.

Run HijackThis, click on "Scan" and check the boxes next to all these items.

Just had an instance of an intercept of the W32.Netsky.P@mm!enc worm by Norton AV. It occured (as usual) while in MSN mail. I think the MSN mail server is the source. The Norton AV intercept states that it is unable to delete a file that is in

\documents and setting\Arthur\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\MSN\db

and is named [my account name]-MSN-COM.1840

Attached is another HijackThis log just to be safe. I sent a problem report to the MSN support folks asking about the worm. I was supposed to get an anser within 24 hours (that was 3 days ago). Am going to ding them again. From what I've been able to glean from the web, the Netsky worm variants are supposed to be one of the more frequent pieces of malicious code that is currently spreading.

Just as you I think the problem lies with MSN, not with you. Someone (somehow) put me on a "virus-list", so I get sent the infamous ones as well. A good anti-virus program will stop it in its tracks.

Empty your Recycle Bin! I still see a program being started up from there!

Run HijackThis, click on "Scan" and check the boxes next to all these items.

Then close all windows, and browsers, except HijackThis. Tell HijackThis to "Fix checked". Restart your computer and post a new log in this thread.

Hi Bobbi and thank you for your persistence in this matter.

The latest HighjackThis log is attached and shows the suspect entry to be removed. I checked out HijackThis backup and log file data and there have been previous instances of the removal (and reappearance) of the entry for

HKLM\..\Run: [MCUpdateExe] C:\recycler\s-1-5-~1.dc1.com\agent\mcupdate.exe

I emptied the recycle bin and Norton protected recycle bin and performed the fix with HijackThis. As a point of info, the suspect exe file also gets set up as a scheduled task to periodically invoke the McAfee SecurityCenter Update Manager. I had also removed this scheduled task before.

McAfee's SecurityCenter Update Manager is implemented as a (local) service and it did not get removed when I uninstalled the McAfee Internet Security Suite. I disabled the service sometime back and would love to find a way to remove it rather than just leaving it disabled.

After the HijackThis fix, I did a series of finds in the registry and it contains many McAfee entries with their origin references to the recycle bin. It appears that these entries should be deleted with something like Regedit but I did not do so. They don't show up on the attached HijackThis log but are in the registry.

There are so many entries that I'd appreciate your advice on what to do with them. There are literally hundreds of entries that did not get removed from the registry during McAfee Internet Security Suite uninstall.

FYI McAfee Internet Security Center has a "feature" which will not allow you to uninstall the Security Center integrator app unless you first individually uninstall each sub-application that it integrates. The problem is that if you also install McAfee QuickClean (which I did) then you cannot uninstall QuickClean Light any more through Add/Remove Programs and as a result, cannot get rid of the integrator. McAfee steers you to a KB article on how to to manually uninstall the software and Registry entries (apparantly not quite completely). That's why I believe there are so many entries pointing to the recycle bin.

I will get McAfees uninstall instructions again and go through the process again.

Would you, by any chance, be willing to recommend any registry cleaning software that is reliable and recoverable?

I think you can safely remove them, but be sure to make a backup of your Registry (just in case)
I don't use any so I don't know which one is reliable, and or, recoverable.

This log is clean!

This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. Read the article behind this link "How did I get infected". If you don't already have them, you need an antivirus that is updated, a good firewall for example Kerio Personal Firewall or ZoneLabs Zone Alarm, a spyware blocker like SpywareBlaster and also IE-Spyads and spyware detection (Ad-aware SE and SpyBot S+D). All of these have good free versions available... be very cautious about any security software that advertises in popups or other intrusive ways, they are not only usually useless, but also often have malware in them....

Instead of Internet Explorer, use a different browser like Opera, Mozilla or Firefox.

Last, but not least, you need to keep Windows and Internet Explorer up to date by getting all the latest security patches that protects your computer.

This can be accessed by going to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and following the prompts. If you are running Windows XP get updated to SP-2
