Full Version: Help! Recurrent Trojan infection!
Gladiator Security Forum > Malware Help Forum > HELP! Think you are Infected?
Jalapeno
Please help me. I made the unfortunate decision of getting the serial number of a program on one website and after that, our office's computer got heavily infected with Trojans. It's really annoying! We get non-stop window that this particular file is infected with Trojan Backdoor, Favadd.B, Downloader Small.8.R, Collected.Z, Startpage.13.Y, etc. even though I've already deleted the file. Please help. Thanks very much. crying.gif

Did a system scan with AVG Free Edition (not the 6.0version) and cleaned (deleted) the infected files.

Hi Jalapeno,

Open "Add/Remove Programs" in the Control Panel. Select the following items:
  • Windows ServeAd <--- or something like that
and click "Remove" for each of them.

Download StartDreck from one of these adresses:Extract this file to its own folder and start the program.

Click on "Config". In the next window, click on the button "unmark all". And select the following options:
  • Registry -> Run Keys
  • System/Drivers -> Running Processes
Click "Ok".

Click the button "Save" to save the log file. Post the log in this thread.

Download CoolWebShredder from http://www.merijn.org/files/cwshredder.zip or http://www.zerosrealm.com/downloads/CWShredder.zip.
Extract CWShredder to its own folder. Restart in Safe Mode (How do I Safe Boot my computer?) and run the program.

Be sure all open windows are closed. Click the "Fix ->" button.

Make sure you let it fix all CWS Remnants.

Open Internet Explorer and run the following online virusscans:

Housecall Anti Virus Panda Anti Virus

Download Ad-aware SE and update it (the Globe icon, then Connect). Then click on "Perform Full System Scan". Uncheck "Search for negligible risk entries" and click on "Next". Eliminate all that Ad-aware finds.

Restart your computer after cleaning with Ad-aware and scan again. Repeat the process until no further items are found as bad.

Run HijackThis, click on "Scan" and check the boxes next to all these items.

Hi Bobbi, thanks for your quick reply. Appreciate it.

I've followed the instructions on your post, except for scanning my computer with Adaware (wouldn't run smoothly, would always stall). I used Spybot instead. Hope that's ok.

Anyway, here are the logs of Startdreck and Hijack this:

I've fixed everything you've posted on your message, but some of the entries are still popping up. I've also deleted the files in the Windows & Program Files folders. After deleting the files, I've noticed that the annoying & intrusive pop-ups are now gone, and so are the virus alerts by AVGFree.

But there's one more problem: everytime we open IE, there's a search page on the screen eventhough the address reads "About:Blank". Here's a screenshot of it:

And we're having problems checking our emails (yahoo, hotmail) because everytime we try to access our emails, the search page keeps on popping up. Is there some way to get rid of it?

Thanks very much for your help! Really grateful. :thumb:

Hi Jalapeno,

Please move HijackThis to another location, preferably c:\Program Files\HijackThis. Anywhere is fine, other than your Desktop or a Temp folder. If HijackThis is in a temporary folder you run the risk of accidentally deleting the backups or it clutters your desktop with all the backups.
If you use Windows XP it might be that you just double clicked on the file HijackThis.exe, but that only extracts the file to a temporary folder. Please select the file and Extract it to a folder.

How do you make a permanent folder:

Click "My Computer", then "C:\" and then on "Program Files".
In the menu bar, "File"->"New"->"Folder".
That will create a folder named "New Folder", which you can rename to "HJT" or "HijackThis".
Now you have "C:\Program Files\HijackThis". Put your HijackThis.exe there.
  • Prepare CWShredder:
    • Download CWShredder.
    • Save it to your desktop.
    • Do not run it yet. We will run it later.
  • Run Symantec's BackDoor Removal Tool:
    • Download the Backdoor.Agent.B Removal Tool from Symantec.
    • Follow Symantec's instructions for how to run it.
    • Be sure to save the log file. I will need to see it later.
    • Restart your computer.
  • Run CWShredder. Be sure to click Fix as opposed to Scan Only. It should find some things and remove them.
  • Restart your computer once more.
  • Post a new HijackThis log and the log Symantec's tool gave you.
Run HijackThis, click on "Scan" and check the boxes next to all these items.
