Help!

I think that I have a virus, but McAffee does not detect it. The computer is running very slow. The problem program appears to be called "abrplay.exe."

Thanks for any assistance,

Bluehammock

Hi bluehammock,

There is a newer version of HijackThis than what you are using. Please get the new version from one of these addresses.
http://209.133.47.12/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe
http://www.mjc1.com/mirror/hjt/
http://downloads.net-integration.net/HijackThis.exe
http://www.computercops.biz/downloads-file-328.html
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/hijackthis.zip

Your log shows signs of a Vundo/Virtumondo trojan infection. This infection is difficult to remove manually but fortunately, Symantec has developed a fix for it.
  • Download Symantec Trojan.Vundo Removal Tool 1.2.4.
  • Save FixVundo.exe to a convenient location, such as your desktop.
  • Close any programs that you may have open.
  • If you are connected to a network and/or a full-time Internet connection, please disconnect your computer now. Failure to do so might prevent the fix from working.
  • Double-click FixVundo.exe to start the Vundo removal tool.
  • Click "Start" to begin the removal process. Remember not to have any programs open.
  • It will scan your computer for signs of Vundo. Depending on the amount of files you have, it might take a long time.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Run the tool with the same instructions to make sure Vundo has been eliminated.
  • You can reconnect your computer to the network and/or full-time internet connection.
  • Restart your computer once more.
  • Post a fresh HijackThis log.

Dear Computer Whisperer,

Thank you for taking the time to advise me. I downloaded the newer Hijack this. I downloaded the fixvundo - disabled system restore - ran fixvundo - it found one vundovirus - I restarted the computer - ran fixvundo again - it found nothing - I restarted again and ran the Highjack this diagnostic. I have attached the log.

I still think that the system has a problem. I appreciate any information that you can pass along.

Thanks,
Bluehammock

Hi bluehammock,

Open Windows Explorer, navigate to the folder "C:\WINDOWS\System32\" and find the file "ofps.exe". Right click on the file and select "Properties" from the menu. Select the "Version" tab and copy the information it gives here.

Run HijackThis, click on "Scan" and check the boxes next to all these items.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [*utilbas] C:\WINDOWS\Config\utilbas.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [javaole] C:\WINDOWS\system32\MsDtc\javaole.exe

Then close all windows, and browsers, except HijackThis. Tell HijackThis to "Fix checked".

Restart your computer in Safe Mode. How do I Safe Boot my computer?

Show hidden files. How do I show hidden files?

Delete the following files in red (it could be that they are deleted already):

C:\WINDOWS\Config\utilbas.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\MsDtc\javaole.exe

Restart your computer and post a new log in this thread.
bluehammock
Dear Computer Whisperer-

I went into system 32 and found "Ofps" it is not listed with an exe after it. I could not see a "version" tab. a box came up saying that it relates to digital camera software. What should I do?

I am still carrying out the other tasks.

Thanks,
Bluehammock
bluehammock
Dear Computer Whisperer,

I followed the rest of your directions. The files had already been deleted when I went into safemode and searched for them. I am attaching the newest Hijack this log.

Thanks!

Bluehammock

Hi bluehammock,

This log is clean!

This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. Read the article behind this link "How did I get infected". If you don't already have them, you need an antivirus that is updated, a good firewall for example Kerio Personal Firewall or ZoneLabs Zone Alarm, a spyware blocker like SpywareBlaster and also IE-Spyads and spyware detection (Ad-aware SE and SpyBot S+D). All of these have good free versions available... be very cautious about any security software that advertises in popups or other intrusive ways, they are not only usually useless, but also often have malware in them....

Instead of Internet Explorer, use a different browser like Opera, Mozilla or Firefox.

Last, but not least, you need to keep Windows and Internet Explorer up to date by getting all the latest security patches that protects your computer.

This can be accessed by going to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and following the prompts. If you are running Windows XP get updated to SP-2

Please post back if you are still having any problems....
