Where is it located?

You might want to save this page on your favorites, so you can find it again when you return. You can also click on your name and click on "Find All Posts" to find your thread.

Run HijackThis, click on "Scan" and check the boxes next to all these items.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.websearch.com/ie.aspx?tb_id=50141

There are restrictions set on Control Panel and Internet Explorer. If you or your system administrator has not set these restrictions, also check these items.

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

Then close all windows, and browsers, except HijackThis. Tell HijackThis to "Fix checked".

Restart your computer in Safe Mode. How do I Safe Boot my computer?

Show hidden files. How do I show hidden files?

Delete the following files in red (it could be that they are deleted already):

C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm

Restart your computer and post a new log in this thread.

Hi dstme,

ok, thanks.
I have fix with Hijack and deleted related.htm in a Safe Mode
I did another scan with AVG, purityscan.u still inside c:\Documents and Settings\Roystan\Applications Data\jz?ux?.exe
AVG said it has deleted, but when check again it is still there.
Help?
Is that file still there? It is Purity Scan. If it is still there you can safely delete it, and then flush your Recycle Bin.

This log is clean!

This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. Read the article behind this link "How did I get infected". If you don't already have them, you need an antivirus that is updated, a good firewall for example Kerio Personal Firewall or ZoneLabs Zone Alarm, a spyware blocker like SpywareBlaster and also IE-Spyads and spyware detection (Ad-aware SE and SpyBot S+D). All of these have good free versions available... be very cautious about any security software that advertises in popups or other intrusive ways, they are not only usually useless, but also often have malware in them....

Instead of Internet Explorer, use a different browser like Opera, Mozilla or Firefox.

Last, but not least, you need to keep Windows and Internet Explorer up to date by getting all the latest security patches that protects your computer.

This can be accessed by going to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and following the prompts. If you are running Windows XP get updated to SP-2

Please post back if you are still having any problems....
dstme
Purityscan is still here. c:\Documents and Settings\Roystan\Applications Data\jz?ux?.exe

When I go to Windows Explorer, I could not locate it before and after AVG scan.
Is it because the file is called jz?ux?.exe ? Is there another way to located this file and delete it?
Bobbi Flekman
Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the box below into a new text file. Save it as FindFile.bat and save it on your Desktop.

CODE
dir "c:\Documents and Settings\Roystan\Applications Data\jz?ux?.exe" /a h > files.txt
notepad files.txt

Locate FindFile.bat on your Desktop and double-click on it. It will open Notepad with some text in it. Please post the text here.
dstme
Hi,
When I double click it, the DOS prompt me this:
"C:\Documents and Settings\Roystan\Desktop>dir c:\Documents and Settings\Roystan\
Applications Data\jz?ux?.exe /a h 1>files.txt
The system cannot find the path specified.
C:\Documents and Settings\Roystan\Desktop>notepad files.txt "

Then it open a notepad with the filename: files.txt with nothing on it (no text).
What does it means?
Bobbi Flekman
I'm sorry. I forgot to strategically place '"' around the path. Windows doesn't like spaces in pathnames...

Can you follow the post again, or alternatively edit your batchfile to reflect the changes.
dstme
ok got it. Below is the file created:

Volume in drive C has no label.
Volume Serial Number is 004B-8950

Directory of C:\Documents and Settings\Roystan\Application Data

09/30/2004 02:18 PM 82,432 jz?ux?.exe
1 File(s) 82,432 bytes

Directory of C:\Documents and Settings\Roystan\Desktop

 So, how to kill this purityscan.u?
Bobbi Flekman
Hi dstme,

Well, actually it is very simple. Open Windows Explorer, navigate to the folder "C:\Documents and Settings\Roystan\Application Data" and find the file "jz?ux?.exe". Delete this file.

I asked for this log to find out if there was more than one, and if so what are the names of it. But there is just one...
dstme
Thanks. I like to delete it, but as said previously, I cannot see the file in C:\Documents and Settings\Roystan\Application Data.

I tried using Windows Explorer and even MS DOS promt but the file did not show up. It is like it is hidden in the directory.

Is there any way to locate it?

I have this information in me standard reply, so I thought that you already had all files showing. How do I show hidden files?
dstme
:king: Thanks, man.
I just miss to uncheck "Hide protected operating system"

Now I got it and got rid of purityscan.u.

Hope it will not come back.

Thanks again for your GREAT help!!!! :thumb:
