  i've had this trojan for a while. and i keep getting messages from AVG when i startup my computer saying that the Trojan horse Startpage.5.BQ is found in C:\WINDOWS\system32\notepad.exe
when i run AVG i hit the "move infected file to virus vault" and it says that the virus is critical for the proper running of my computer...blah blah blah. i hit okay. and nothing happens.
and it suggests using the Windows disk to re-install the app. but i can't find it on the disk? i'm extrememly confused and don't know what to do.
i don't know how to get the virus off my computer and i don't know where to download notepad from again.

PLEASE HELP!! thank you!! :]

Hello bad_stickleback

Can you confirm that you got infected by that trojan Startpage.5.BQ and not with Startpage.5.DQ?

I've checked up various viruslists bout you request but couldn't find such an entry. So I assume you may have mistyped.

If it is Startpage.DQ, here a possible solution:
Mc Afee

I would advice you to create a HJT log in addition, following the steps here

READ THIS FIRST

This link will tell you where to get the needed programs for you HJT log file.

After that you should post your HJT log file here:

thank you very much!!

First:
Please Download CoolWebShredder, from
http://www.merijn.org/files/cwshredder.zip
http://www.zerosrealm.com/downloads/CWShredder.zip

Extract CWShredder to its own folder,
Reboot in Safe Mode*** and run the program.
Be sure all open windows are closed.
Click the 'Fix ->' button.
Make sure you let it fix all CWS Remnants.
Afterwards Reboot.

Then, please Post a fresh Hijack This log in this thread.

*** How to Boot into Safe mode: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen...001052409420406

Second:
Download the latest version of Adaware (get the free edition)
http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/
(choose download from the lefthand menu)

Go to: Select Full Install and choose the download location of your choice (1.7mb)
Choose Download from http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail.php3?fid=965718306 <--(I found FileForum easiest)

Be sure to UPDATE BEFORE SCANNING FIRST!! That is a very important step and I have included easy directions.

After download and installing first, please update the program. Just open Adaware and click on *Check for Updates Now* and then *Connect*. It will find a new reference-file. Click *ok* and let it download and install the updates by clicking on *Finish* .This will return you to the main screen.

Next, go to Settings (the gear icon at the top) and then *Scanning* and checkmark these items so they will be green:
Scan within archives
Scan my IE Favorites for banned URLS
Scan my hosts file

Then click *proceed* to save settings.

Click on *Tweak* next. And checkmark to make this green also:
Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion

Click on *proceed*

Next, from the main screen, click on *Start* (lower righthand corner) and put a dot in the box next to *use Custom scanning options*, then click *Next* to start your scan.

Checkmark any items found after scanning to remove (this will actually put them in quarantine and can recover from backup if any should not be removed).

Reboot your PC after cleaning with Adaware and scan again. Repeat the process until no further items are found as bad.

Run HiJackThis and post a new log in this thread.
bad_stickleback
okay, i ran CWShredder in safe mode and heres my HJT log after that, but before running AdAware.

:o I can't find the "Automatically try to ungregister objects prior to deletion" on the *TWEAK* menu of Adaware. where would i find it??
LoPhatPhuud
Sorry, those Ad-Aware instructions were not for the new SE version. Here they are:

1. Download and Install Ad-Aware SE, keeping the default options. However, some of the settings will need to be changed before your first scan.
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download506.html

2.Close ALL windows except Ad-Aware SE

3. Click on the‘world’ icon at the top right of the Ad-Aware SE window and let AdAware SE update the reference list for the adware and malware.

4. Once the update is finished click on the ‘Gear’ icon (second from the left at the top of the window) to access the preferences/settings window

1) In the ‘General’ window make sure the following are selected in green:
*Automatically save log-file
*Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
*Safe Mode (always request confirmation)

Under Definitions:
*Prompt to udate outdated definitions - set the number of days

2) Click on the ‘Scanning’ button on the left and select in green :

Under Driver, Folders & Files:
*Scan Within Archives

Under Select drives & folders to scan -
*choose all hard drives

Under Memory & Registry: all green
*Scan Active Processes
*Scan Registry
*Deep Scan Registry
*Scan my IE favorites for banned URL’s
*Scan my Hosts file

3) Click on the ‘Advanced’ button on the left and select in green:

Under Shell Integration:
*Move deleted files to recycle bin

Under Logfile Detail Level: (all green)
*include addtional object information
*DESELECT - include negligible objects information
*include environment information

Under Alternate Data Streams:
*Don't log streams smaller than 0 bytes
*Don't log ADS with the following names: CA_INOCULATEIT

4) Click the ‘Tweak’ button and select in green:

Under the ‘Scanning Engine’:
*Unload recognized processes during scanning
*Scan registry for all users instead of current user only

Under the ‘Cleaning Engine’:
*Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot

Under the Log Files:
*Include basic Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
*Include additional Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
*Please do not check and make Green: Include Module list in logfile

5. Click on ‘Proceed’ to save the settings.

6. Click ‘Start’

*Choose:'Perform Full System Scan'
*DESELECT "Search for negligible risk entries", as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat.

7. Click ‘Next’ and Ad-Aware SE will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected and clean automatically.

8. If Ad-Aware SE finds bad entries in the registry or bad files, you will receive a list of what it found in the window

9. Save the log file when it asks and then click ‘finish’

10. REBOOT to complete the removal of what Ad-Aware SE found.

11. Post the Ad-AWare log in this thread.

Finally, run HiJackThis again and post a new HiJackThis log in this thread.

First:
You may want to consider using Spybloc. The program is not on the Rogue Spyware list (yet) here:http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm
But its advertsing and come-on seems much the same. If the detection is free but you have to pay to remove, then I would most certainly recommend removing it if you ahve not paid.

I notice that in its comparison, it does not mention the two leading products (Ad-Aware and Spybot, both of which are free.

Second:
Before we begin, please be sure that HiJackThis is in its own folder. This will allow us to use backups to restore entries if necessary. Please do not put HiJackThis in a temporary folder, or on the Desktop. I suggest using 'c:\program files\hijackthis\' or C:\HiJackThis\, but any name you choose is fine.

Check the following items in HijackThis.
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = file://C:\WINDOWS\System32/left.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...//www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...//www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://image73.eguard.com/sharewareonline/...1803-pua-4.html
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - _{5D60FF48-95BE-4956-B4C6-6BB168A70310} - (no file)

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {C5183ABC-EB6E-4E05-B8C9-500A16B6CF94} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: WinPage Affiliate - {E8EAEB34-F7B5-4C55-87FF-720FAF53D841} - C:\Documents and Settings\Bob\Local Settings\Temp\BKxm.dll

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WindowsUpd] C:\WINDOWS\WindowsUpd1.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [rzcNk] C:\documents and settings\user\local settings\temp\rzcNk.exe

Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked.

Reboot in Safe Mode*, delete the following: (you may need to show hidden files**)
C:\WINDOWS\WindowsUpd1.exe
C:\documents and settings\user\local settings\temp\rzcNk.exe

*How to Boot into Safe mode: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen...001052409420406
**Show Hidden and System files and folders
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

Also, uncheck the boxes for hiding known file extensions and hiding protected operating system files. We want to see it all. When we finish here, it would be a good idea to rehide the protected operating system files but leave the rest to be shown.

Reboot in normal mode.

HiJackThis version 198.2 is now available.
If you do not already have it installed, download it from here:
http://209.133.47.12/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe
http://downloads.net-integration.net/HijackThis.exe
http://www.computercops.biz/downloads-file-328.html

Then run HiJackThis again and post a new log in this thread.

I've done all of this, but i still have the Trojan Horse Startpage.5.BQ. is all of this going to eventually remove that trojan?

There is only one entry left to be removed and I do not seet he file running so it is possible it has been deleted.

When you get thae trojan notice, what is the file and/or location. It is possible that you are getting an alert from the System Restore area. I need to know where the file is to be able to remove it.

Reboot in Safe Mode* and run HiJackThis. <-- IMPORTANT

Check the following items in HijackThis.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WindowsUpd] C:\WINDOWS\WindowsUpd1.exe

Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked.

While still in Safe Mode*, delete the following: (you may need to show hidden files**)
C:\WINDOWS\WindowsUpd1.exe

*How to Boot into Safe mode: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen...001052409420406
**Show Hidden and System files and folders
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

Also, uncheck the boxes for hiding known file extensions and hiding protected operating system files. We want to see it all. When we finish here, it would be a good idea to rehide the protected operating system files but leave the rest to be shown.

Reboot in normal mode.

HiJackThis version 198.2 is now available.
If you do not already have it installed, download it from here:
http://downloads.net-integration.net/HijackThis.exe
http://www.computercops.biz/downloads-file-328.html
http://tomcoyote.org/hjt/

Run HiJackThis again and post a new log in this thread.

You have an infected Notepad file.

Windows has two copies. One in c:\windows\ and one in c:\windows\system32\. You are reporting the later one to be infected.

The real file (for XP) is 69,120 bytes in length. Delete the copy from c:\windows\system32\ and replace it with a copy from c:\windows\.

If you have any doubts, you can download a good copy of Notepad.exe from here:
http://spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/windows/notepad_xp.zip

Let me know how it goes.

Glad to help and here is some info on avoiding spyware/malware in the future:

Your log is clean. The only thing you need to do is upgrade your Windows and Internet Explorer to SP2.

At last, your system is clean and free of spyware! Want to keep it that way?

Here are some simple steps you can take to reduce the chance of infection in the future.

1. Visit Windows Update: <-- YOU NEED TO DO THIS!!
Make sure that you have all the Critical Updates recommended for your operating system and IE. The first defense against infection is a properly patched OS.
a. Windows Update: http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

2. Adjust your security settings for ActiveX:]
Go to Internet Options/Security/Internet, press 'default level', then OK.
Now press "Custom Level."
In the ActiveX section, set the first option, 'Download signed controls', to 'Prompt; set the
second option, 'Download unsigned controls', to 'Disable'; and finally, set 'Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe" to 'Disable'.

3. Download and install the following free programs
a. SpywareBlaster: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
b. SpywareGuard: http://www.wilderssecurity.net/spywareguard.html
c. IE/Spyad: https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm

4. Install Spyware Detection and Removal Programs:
You may also want to consider installing either or both of AdAware (free version) and Spybot S&D (freeware). Use these programs to regularly scan your system for and remove many forms of spyware/malware.
a. AdAware: http://www.lavasoft.de/]http://www.lavasoft.de/
b. Spybot S&D: http://security.kolla.de/index.php?lang=en&page=download

5. Install 'Spoofstick"
Spoofstick is a simple browser extension that helps users detect spoofed (fake) websites. This extension is free and installs in Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox.
a. http://www.corestreet.com/spoofstick

For more information about Spyware, the tools available, and other informative material, including information on how you may have been infected in the first place, please check out this link: http://forum.gladiator-antivirus.com/index...?showtopic=9857

Good luck, and thanks for coming to our forums for help with your security and malware issues.

I've done all of this and downloaded everything you told me to.
after i did this, i wasn't able to open up K-lite. is there a reason for this and is there a way i can open it?
LoPhatPhuud
Nothing we did should have affected programs. All I can suggest is remove and re-install
bad_stickleback
I uninstalled and reinstalled. and i still can't open it. could it possibly be either Spyware Guard or Spyware Blaster or any of the other programs that you suggested i download?
LoPhatPhuud
It is possible, but extremely remote. WIsh I had more info but I do not.

I constantly get a popup at random times and the url is: http://www.ad-w-a-r-e.com/cgi-bin/PopupV2?...354B}&AD=CyDoor
and the message that it says is:

Download HijackThis.
http://209.133.47.12/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe
http://www.mjc1.com/mirror/hjt/
http://downloads.net-integration.net/HijackThis.exe
http://www.computercops.biz/downloads-file-328.html
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/hijackthis.zip

Unzip to a folder other than your Desktop or the Temp folder. Then, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and click "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that and copy and paste its contents in this thread.

Most of what it lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet. Someone will be along to tell you what steps to take after you post the contents of the scan results.

Hi bad_stickleback,
QUOTE
The Search came up with: "backup-20041022-163100-812-Search" found in C:\hikackthis\backups
Good that means it's gone...

Your log is clean!

This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. Read the article behind this link "How did I get infected". If you don't already have them, you need an antivirus that is updated, a good firewall for example Kerio Personal Firewall or ZoneLabs Zone Alarm and a spyware blocker like SpywareBlaster and also IE-Spyads. All of these have good free versions available... be very cautious about any security software that advertises in popups or other intrusive ways, they are not only usually useless, but also often have malware in them....

Last, but not least, you need to keep Windows and Internet Explorer up to date by getting all the latest security patches that protects your computer.

This can be accessed by going to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and following the prompts. If you are running Windows XP get updated to SP-2

Please post back if you are still having any problems....

Also, uncheck the boxes for hiding known file extensions and hiding protected operating system files. We want to see it all. When we finish here, it would be a good idea to rehide the protected operating system files but leave the rest to be shown.

HiJackThis version 198.2 is now available.
If you do not already have it installed, download it from here:

Then run HiJackThis again and post a new log in this thread.

 when i turn my other computer on and click on my logon name thing, after a few minutes, i get a message that says that windows needs to make a copy or something or other. and then i say okay and then when i get to my desktop, it says that it set it as the windows default and then i get a lot of messages that say something like: there is insufficient somethingorother the application needs to be terminated. and then every time i try to open a program, that message comes up.
please help if you can!
Bobbi Flekman
Hi bad_stickleback,

How many computers do you have? Is this the same one as in this thread http://forum.gladiator-antivirus.com/index...topic=19419&hl=. If so, please do as LPP says, and after that post a log in that thread. If not, first make sure that that computer is malware free and secure, before tackling this one.

If you use more than one thread you might get confused in knowing which thread belongs to which computer. that doesn't help you, and doesn't help us either. ;)
bad_stickleback
i have two computers, that one that LPP is helping me with is my laptop. this computer is my family's desktop. and i was able to get on it. and i ran my virus scanner and spybot. should i post a HijackThis log?
Bobbi Flekman
You should post a log, but be aware of what I said. If you are confusing the computers with the two threads that could be disastrous!
bad_stickleback
i didn't confuse the computers, i swear!

Hi bad_stickleback,

This log is clean.

Can you be more specific as to your problem? I can only work on what you tell me.

I do see that you run a lot of programs from startup. In my opinion there a lot that are not needed. If you want I can make a list of what is not needed ,and then you can make a decision as to delete them from startup.
bad_stickleback
my mom is really angry, so could you please help me. i copied down what the problem said.
"This copy of Windows must be activated before you can log on. Do you want to activate Windows now?"
then i click yes, and this comes up: "An error for checking the liscence on the computer. Error code: 080004005"

i was able to get on yesterday at 8:56am. but i was unable to log on any other time today or last night.
Bobbi Flekman
I don't have XP, but I think that you can simply activate Windows through the Microsoft's website.

I'll ask around to see if there are other ways.

Was your Windows activated yesterday? Or did you get that same message? You could call Microsoft and ask about the activation.
Bobbi Flekman
I've looked around and as far as I can find 080004005 is a general exception. This means that it can be anything.

I've also looked for XP activation and on the Microsoft site I've found quite a few references for you to look at. May be this can help.
