Hi Coolmo,

Open "Add/Remove Programs" in the Control Panel. Select the following items:
  • Viewpoint Media Player
  • WildTangent
  • WinTools
and click "Remove" for each of them.

I recommend that you remove Weatherbug entirely. It is becoming a nuisance and may install spyware/malware if you are not using the paid version. WeatherPulse by Tropic Designs is, in my opinion, a better program and does not install any spyware/malware; You can download it here (free): http://www.tropicdesigns.net

You are using Internet Optimizer. If you did not install this yourself I recommend removing this program. Use "Add/Remove Programs" and locate "Active Alert" and "Internet Optimizer". In older versions these may work if used together. Newer versions present only "Internet Optimizer", which on its own has no effect.

Run HijackThis, click on "Scan" and check the boxes next to all these items.

You may have to have hidden files showing. How do I show hidden files?

Folders and files with a tilde (~), means that there is a file/folder that starts with the six characters in front of the tilde, note that there may be spaces in the name. If there are more than one, please report them back and do not delete!

Delete the following folders in red (it could be that they are deleted already):

C:\Program Files\Viewpoint
C:\Program Files\WildTangent
c:\program files\180solutions
C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinTools
C:\Program Files\Toolbar

Restart your computer and post a new log in this thread.

Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the box below into a new text file. Save it as FindFile.bat and save it on your Desktop.

CODE
dir C:\WINDOWS\system32\l?gonui.exe /a h > files.txt
notepad files.txt

Locate FindFile.bat on your Desktop and double-click on it. It will open Notepad with some text in it. Please post the text here.

First off, sorry this took so long. I am a college student attempting to fix my parents computer and I figured it would be better if I waited until I was home again on break instead of trying to get them to do it. Here's what you requested....

Fixed those selected items, but I believe the file to delete while in safe mode was already deleted.

Hi Coolmo,

If I were you I'd fix this line with HijackThis. I don't like any site in my Trusted Zones and windowsupdate doesn't need it to work.

O15 - Trusted Zone: http://*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com

For the rest, this log is clean!

This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. Read the article behind this link "How did I get infected". If you don't already have them, you need an antivirus that is updated, a good firewall for example Kerio Personal Firewall or ZoneLabs Zone Alarm, a spyware blocker like SpywareBlaster and also IE-Spyads and spyware detection (Ad-aware SE and SpyBot S+D). All of these have good free versions available... be very cautious about any security software that advertises in popups or other intrusive ways, they are not only usually useless, but also often have malware in them....

Instead of Internet Explorer, use a different browser like Opera, Mozilla or Firefox.

Last, but not least, you need to keep Windows and Internet Explorer up to date by getting all the latest security patches that protects your computer.

This can be accessed by going to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and following the prompts. If you are running Windows XP get updated to SP-2

Please post back if you are still having any problems....
Coolmo
Hey,

Thanks so much for your help! It is much appreciated. I have one question. Do you recommend one of these firewalls ( Kerio Personal Firewall or ZoneLabs Zone Alarm) more than the other?

Jon

Either firewall is good. I think Kerio is a little lighter on the computer; less resource heavy, needed memory, diskspace... But, it's about the end result.
