~CJ
He takes very little care towards actually protecting his system and as a result he continually recieves pop-up ads even while IE isn't open. for example, while playing games he'll still be recieving popups. I switched him over to Firefox just a few days ago however the problem still occurs (as I was pretty sure it would)

anyway, here's the log.

Hi CJ,

You have a Peper infection, click HERE to download the PeperFix tool - save it to your desktop.

Restart your computer into Safe Mode.
Important: You must be OnLine when running it and let it have access to pass the firewall.
Doubleclick the PeperFix.exe and run it.
Reboot your computer into Safe Mode again.
Run PeperFix a second time.
Reboot normally, run another Hijack This scan, and post it here for further review.

You are using Kazaa. This is not technically malware by itself, but it installs malware in order to run properly and it opens the door for every other nasty program you can think of. I strongly recommend that you remove it. Read this article for alternatives that will provide some of the same function without the garbage: http://www.spywareinfo.com/articles/p2p/ If you opt to remove it, first use "Add/Remove Program" to remove it and any reference to Altnet and P2P Networking. Go to your control panel, then to "Add/Remove Programs", uninstall P2P networking...If/when asked whether you also want to remove Altnet components, say "Yes".
P2P Networking is a totally useless Kazaa add-on, and it's been reported to be responsible for serious system slowdowns. You may also want to run KazaaBegone...
~CJ
I went ahead and uninstalled Kazaa (however it looked as though he was using Kazaa in addition to K++ (kazaa lite) as well) so removed both as he wasn't using them anyway.

Hi CJ,

Run HijackThis, click on "Scan" and check the boxes next to all these items.

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://ninemsn.com.au/

O2 - BHO: Band Class - {C5183ABC-EB6E-4E05-B8C9-500A16B6CF94} - C:\Program Files\SEP\sep.dll

This item is considered to be a resource hog that is not needed and it may be worthwhile to fix it with HijackThis. You will still be able to start it manually if you need it.

O4 - Startup: Office Startup.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA.EXE

You have Microsoft's Find Fast running on your program and while a legitimate program, it is a resource hog. It is usually the cause of your computer getting really slow or even freezing for several seconds while it is indexing. Find fast neither finds things any better or faster than other Windows searches. You will notice system improvement by disabling this one. After fixing with Hijackthis, go into the "FindFast"-icon in the Control Panel and choose the "Index \ Close and Stop" menu option.

O4 - Startup: Microsoft Find Fast.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\FINDFAST.EXE

You have PowerReg Scheduler in your log. This is a registration reminder that is used by a number of different companies. It is not needed and some people think that it reports back to the company about your computer, so I suggest fixing it...

O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler.exe

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {1A00C40B-DA85-4aa3-A67F-582D9347EECD} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\IEDriver\TD.exe (file missing)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: MaxSpeed - {1A00C40B-DA85-4aa3-A67F-582D9347EECD} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\IEDriver\TD.exe (file missing)

Then close all windows, and browsers, except HijackThis. Tell HijackThis to "Fix checked".

Restart your computer in Safe Mode. How do I Safe Boot my computer?

You may have to have hidden files showing. How do I show hidden files?

Folders and files with a tilde (~), means that there is a file/folder that starts with the six characters in front of the tilde, note that there may be spaces in the name. If there are more than one, please report them back and do not delete!

Delete the following files in red (it could be that they are deleted already):

All Files in C:\Documents and Settings\Richard\Local Settings\Temp
C:\WINDOWS\System32\Elq0i.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\wcpsvsu.exe

Delete the following folders in red (it could be that they are deleted already):

C:\Program Files\SEP
C:\Program Files\CLOCKS~1
C:\WINDOWS\System32\IEDriver

Restart your computer and post a new log.

Press "Start", "Search", "Files or folders...". Enter wtmgl.exe as the file to search.
Report what it finds.

Just another question since it can't hurt to ask and you may have run across this before (with your area of work), then again this may be the wrong place to be askin about this.

whenever his computer is booted up, he recieves this error.

Runtime Error!

Program: Program Files\Common Files\Sonic\Update Manager\sgtray.exe

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information

it doesn't seem to be anything to worry about though.

Hi CJ,

Delete the following files in red:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\wtmgl.exe

This log is clean!

This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. Read the article behind this link "How did I get infected". If you don't already have them, you need an antivirus that is updated, a good firewall for example Kerio Personal Firewall or ZoneLabs Zone Alarm, a spyware blocker like SpywareBlaster and also IE-Spyads and spyware detection (Ad-aware SE and SpyBot S+D). All of these have good free versions available... be very cautious about any security software that advertises in popups or other intrusive ways, they are not only usually useless, but also often have malware in them....

Last, but not least, you need to keep Windows and Internet Explorer up to date by getting all the latest security patches that protects your computer.

This can be accessed by going to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and following the prompts. If you are running Windows XP get updated to SP-2

Please post back if you are still having any problems....

Is that from this computer? I don't see sgtray being started at boot up? It might help if you you uninstall the program and reinstall it...
