Gladiator Security Forum > Malware Help Forum > HELP! Think you are Infected?
ProgrammerGuy
This trojan showed up twice during a system virus scan with AVG.

In the first instance, UNSTSA2.exe was infected. This was moved to the "vault" without problem. ;)

The second instance is the problem. "c:\restore\temp\a0217885.cpy" is also infected however this 'hidden system file' cannot be removed to the 'vault'. :(

I have my suspicions as to how this happened but cannot confirm it. I downloaded and installed weatherbug 6.0 and it was related to the installation of the 'my search' toolbar that I told the installation program not to install. I removed the toolbar through 'add/remove programs'.

I've run the recommened programs and here's the hjt log file:

I'm at a loss as to what can be done to rid myself of this trojan. :o
Hunter
Someone will look at your entire log soon and help you...

But i would like you to also read this thread..

http://forum.gladiator-antivirus.com/index...topic=19773&hl=

paying particular attention to what I have posted about system restore and your AV since this statement you made.

The second instance is the problem. "c:\restore\temp\a0217885.cpy" is also infected however this 'hidden system file' cannot be removed to the 'vault'.

That is you system restore for ME and that thread will tell you how to clean it out with a link to graphic guidieng you through the steps for ME.

after you have done it..you can turn back on your system restore after the reboot cleans out the previous entries. but you could with to do that after you hijack log is cleaned for you.

have a nice day. Wave.gif

BTW there are other exploit I see in your log that can be cleaned so make sure you keep tack of this thread when your log is analyzed.
Bobbi Flekman
Hi ProgrammerGuy,

I recommend that you remove Weatherbug entirely. It is becoming a nuisance and may install spyware/malware if you are not using the paid version. WeatherPulse by Tropic Designs is, in my opinion, a better program and does not install any spyware/malware; You can download it here (free): http://www.tropicdesigns.net

First we're gonna take care of all the nasties in your log. ;)

Run HijackThis, click on "Scan" and check the boxes next to all these items.

Then close all windows, and browsers, except HijackThis. Tell HijackThis to "Fix checked".

Restart your computer in Safe Mode. How do I Safe Boot my computer?

You may have to have hidden files showing. How do I show hidden files?

Delete the following files in red (it could be that they are deleted already):

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\uwtaop.exe
C:\WINDOWS\ALCHEM.exe
C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm

Restart your computer and post a new log.

Please let me know if you've uninstalled Weatherbug.
ProgrammerGuy
Thanks for the information Bobbi, I'm working on it now...

WeatherBug is history. I've dowloaded WeatherPulse and once I've gotten this other problem solved, I'll install it...

Hello Again...

I've accomplished most of the tasks that you outlined... The tasks related to removal of selected files did not need to be done since they were gone... Must have gone away with WeatherBug...

I'm going to install WeatherPulse and see if it's as good as you say it is. :)

If there's anything else you think I need to do, please let me know...

Everything has been done.

I also ran a virus scan to insure that all instances have been removed.

Ran Spybot S&D and cleaned that up also...

Thanks to all for their help... rolleyes.gif

Hi John,

I see you are running AVG6 Anti-Virus from Grisoft.

Please read these links.

http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_index.php

http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/

You need to get to download AVG7 Free version when it is available as the other version will no longer give you any protection after 31st December 2004.

Run HijackThis, click on "Scan" and check the boxes next to all these items.

Then close all windows, and browsers, except HijackThis. Tell HijackThis to "Fix checked". Restart your computer and post a new log.

Hi John,

This log is clean!

This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. Read the article behind this link "How did I get infected". If you don't already have them, you need an antivirus that is updated, a good firewall for example Kerio Personal Firewall or ZoneLabs Zone Alarm, a spyware blocker like SpywareBlaster and also IE-Spyads and spyware detection (Ad-aware SE and SpyBot S+D). All of these have good free versions available... be very cautious about any security software that advertises in popups or other intrusive ways, they are not only usually useless, but also often have malware in them....

Last, but not least, you need to keep Windows and Internet Explorer up to date by getting all the latest security patches that protects your computer.

This can be accessed by going to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and following the prompts. If you are running Windows XP get updated to SP-2

Please post back if you are still having any problems....
