Full Version: Internet Locks Up PC
Gladiator Security Forum > Malware Help Forum > HELP! Think you are Infected?
kwalker
I have a computer that runs fine until you try to launch the Internet, then it starts locking up all programs. I know there is something installed, but I've ran Adaware SE and Spybot and it's still happening. I've got several hosts in my log file which I suspect aren't good. Is there anyway to learn what is good vs. bad in the HJT log file??? Here's my current log file. Thanks for all your help!

Then close all windows, and browsers, except HijackThis. Tell HijackThis to "Fix checked".

Now, restart your Computer in Safe Mode. How do I Safe Boot my computer?

You may have to have hidden files showing. How do I show hidden files?

Delete the following files in red (it could be that they are deleted already):

C:\WINDOWS\System32\AANTX.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\idctup20.exe

XP is already up to SP 2 so you need to update Windows and Internet Explorer to get all the latest security patches that protects your computer.

This can be accessed by going to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and following the prompts. You may need to do this more than once.

Restart your computer and post a new log.

Thanks so much Bobbi! I did what you said and here's my new HJT Log. I haven't updated to SP2 yet because it is conflicting with my virus software and causes the workstation to shutdown.

Hi kwalker,

your log is clean.

This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. Read the article behind this link "How did I get infected". If you don't already have them, you need an antivirus that is updated, a good firewall for example Kerio Personal Firewall or ZoneLabs Zone Alarm and a spyware blocker like SpywareBlaster and also IE-Spyads. All of these have good free versions available... be very cautious about any security software that advertises in popups or other intrusive ways, they are not only usually useless, but also often have malware in them....

Last, but not least, you need to keep Windows and Internet Explorer up to date by getting all the latest security patches that protects your computer. Otherwise you'll get infected all over again.

This can be accessed by going to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and following the prompts.

Please post back if you are still having any problems....
