I am having severe internet slow-downs and poup problems. I have WinXP Pro and have all updates as of today. I recently started having a problem with "www.ads234". Running Adaware and SpybotS&D has not eliminated all pop-ups, but I will agree has helped.

Since 6pm this evening, I have installed XP SP2, updated and run both AdAware and Spybot. I then immediately installed and ran Hijack this. Here is the log from HijackThis. Any help would be appreciated.

First:
Download the Peper Trojan removal tool :
http://computercops.us/downloads-file-330.html or
http://downloads.subratam.org/PeperFix.exe

IMPORTANT: YOU MUST BE ONLINE WHEN RUNNING IT and let is have access to pass the firewall.

!!! Please run this twice with a reboot in between.

Second:
Before we begin, please be sure that HiJackThis is in its own folder. This will allow us to use backups to restore entries if necessary. Please do not put HiJackThis in a temporary folder, or on the Desktop. I suggest using 'c:\program files\hijackthis\' or C:\HiJackThis\, but any name you choose is fine.

Reboot in Safe Mode* and run HiJackThis. <-- IMPORTANT

Check the following items in HijackThis.

Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked.

While still in Safe Mode*, delete the following: (you may need to show hidden files**)

Also, uncheck the boxes for hiding known file extensions and hiding protected operating system files. We want to see it all. When we finish here, it would be a good idea to rehide the protected operating system files but leave the rest to be shown.

Reboot in normal mode.

HiJackThis version 198.2 is now available.
If you do not already have it installed, download it from here:
http://www.computercops.biz/downloads-file-328.html
http://tomcoyote.org/hjt/

Run HiJackThis again and post a new log in this thread.

I've completed the above repairs with Hijack This, except...
1) I could not find "C:\Program Files\AutoUpdate\AutoUpdate.exe"
2) "C:\documen.....\V.exe", listed twice in the fix? Removed once. Another file wasn't intended to be mentioned, was it?

On a somewhat related note, I have seen complaints a time or two on "Real" products, RealPlayer, Real Arcade and the like, being spyware breeders. Are they actually bad, or just a slightly obtrusive set of programs? (Mainly asking since I say an entry for it in the log....)

Anyway, here is the new log file from HijackThis.

In the half hour since I posted, I have been browsing on the internet. Pop-ups have mostly subsided. I just started using WinXP's built-in internet protection and it caught a pop-up that it informed me of. I have had two instances of "www.ads234" catching my browser when clicking a hyperlink.

I guess it isn't all gone yet, but it is definitely better.

I've run Hijack This again, and here is a new log:

THat was my error in listing the same program twice. Came from copying the registry entries and not removing duplicates. ALso, Real software is a resource hog and may expose your system to spyware, but has none itself. It all depends on where you surf. I do not have Real software installed on my computer and in over 3 years have not ever needed it. Others seem to need it all the time.

Let' ssee if we can clean your system up.

O2 - BHO: Search Help - {E8EAEB34-F7B5-4C55-87FF-720FAF53D841} - C:\Documents and Settings\Dad\Local Settings\Temp\SWfBM.dll

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RHjSs6.exe] C:\documents and settings\dad\local settings\temp\RHjSs6.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Ls9czv.exe] C:\documents and settings\dad\local settings\temp\Ls9czv.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Ls9czv] C:\documents and settings\dad\local settings\temp\Ls9czv.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [lBAp0.exe] C:\documents and settings\dad\local settings\temp\lBAp0.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [lBAp0] C:\documents and settings\dad\local settings\temp\lBAp0.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dBQfdVSoo.exe] C:\documents and settings\dad\local settings\temp\dBQfdVSoo.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ClockSync] C:\PROGRA~1\CLOCKS~1\Sync.exe /q

Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked.

While still in Safe Mode*, delete the following: (you may need to show hidden files**)
C:\documents and settings\dad\local settings\temp\RHjSs6.exe
C:\documents and settings\dad\local settings\temp\Ls9czv.exe
C:\documents and settings\dad\local settings\temp\Ls9czv.exe
C:\documents and settings\dad\local settings\temp\lBAp0.exe
C:\documents and settings\dad\local settings\temp\lBAp0.exe
C:\documents and settings\dad\local settings\temp\dBQfdVSoo.exe
C:\Program Files\Clock Sync\ <-- delete folder
C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinTools\ <-- delete folder

*How to Boot into Safe mode: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen...001052409420406
**Show Hidden and System files and folders
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

Also, uncheck the boxes for hiding known file extensions and hiding protected operating system files. We want to see it all. When we finish here, it would be a good idea to rehide the protected operating system files but leave the rest to be shown.

Reboot in normal mode.

HiJackThis version 198.2 is now available.
If you do not already have it installed, download it from here:
http://www.computercops.biz/downloads-file-328.html
http://tomcoyote.org/hjt/

Run HiJackThis again and post a new log in this thread.

OK, no problem about dupes, I just though I'd ask to make sure. I'm new to HijackThis but kinda get what it is doing. (loosely translated - enough knowledge to be dangerous)

One of the HijackThis entries listed for fixing changed it's name (?).
O2 - BHO: Search Help - {E8EAEB34-F7B5-4C55-87FF-720FAF53D841} - C:\Documents and Settings\Dad\Local Settings\Temp\SWfBM.dll
The "BHO: Search Help" changed to "BHO: WinPage Affiliate". Since the CSLID and the rest matched, I killed it.

For file deletion, this time, again, there was one folder listed I was unable to find. This time it was ClockSync. I did a system search and found a few entries in Spybot's recovery folder, and that was it. While I was at it with the file searching, I looked for the files you told me to delete. I deleted the related DLL's (hopefully not bad...). Here's one thing to note, I found this file, "windows\prefetch\dbQfdVSoo.exe-1BA6A179.pf” and deleted it too.

Here is the most recent log.

Your log is clean. The only thing you need to do is upgrade your Windows and Internet Explorer to SP2.

At last, your system is clean and free of spyware! Want to keep it that way?

Here are some simple steps you can take to reduce the chance of infection in the future.

1. Visit Windows Update: <-- YOU NEED TO DO THIS!!
Make sure that you have all the Critical Updates recommended for your operating system and IE. The first defense against infection is a properly patched OS.
a. Windows Update: http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

2. Adjust your security settings for ActiveX:]
Go to Internet Options/Security/Internet, press 'default level', then OK.
Now press "Custom Level."
In the ActiveX section, set the first option, 'Download signed controls', to 'Prompt; set the
second option, 'Download unsigned controls', to 'Disable'; and finally, set 'Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe" to 'Disable'.

3. Download and install the following free programs
a. SpywareBlaster: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
b. SpywareGuard: http://www.wilderssecurity.net/spywareguard.html
c. IE/Spyad: https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm

4. Install Spyware Detection and Removal Programs:
You may also want to consider installing either or both of AdAware (free version) and Spybot S&D (freeware). Use these programs to regularly scan your system for and remove many forms of spyware/malware.
a. AdAware: http://www.lavasoft.de/]http://www.lavasoft.de/
b. Spybot S&D: http://security.kolla.de/index.php?lang=en&page=download

5. Install 'Spoofstick"
Spoofstick is a simple browser extension that helps users detect spoofed (fake) websites. This extension is free and installs in Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox.

Just a follow-up to LoPhatPhuud....

It's going on almost two weeks and the system has been staying pretty clean. Thanks for the assistance. The additional software recommended has been a big help.
