Hello,

I run AVG Free on my XP and it daily detects "Downloader.Keenval.E Trojan horse, and it says to move it to the vault. However, it won't move to the vault, AVG closes and that's the end of the game till the next day. The suspect is in C:\program files\common files\updmgr\updmgr.exe. I run adaware often and I just ran Spybot S&D to no avail. I can't go to the folder and delete it also. I ran the Hijackthis scan and the results are as follows:

Thanks in advance and let me know what else you need. If you see anything else in the above that is superfluous I am definitely interested in getting rid of it.....

The updmgr file is not loading at startup so it should be safe to jsut delete this entire folder. I have included it in the HJT log instructions.

Before we begin, please be sure that HiJackThis is in its own folder. This will allow us to use backups to restore entries if necessary. Please do not put HiJackThis in a temporary folder, or on the Desktop. I suggest using 'c:\program files\hijackthis\' or C:\HiJackThis\, but any name you choose is fine.

Check the following items in HijackThis.

Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked.

Reboot in Safe Mode*, delete the following: (you may need to show hidden files**)

*How to Boot into Safe mode: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen...001052409420406
**Show Hidden and System files and folders
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

Also, uncheck the boxes for hiding known file extensions and hiding protected operating system files. We want to see it all. When we finish here, it would be a good idea to rehide the protected operating system files but leave the rest to be shown.

Reboot in normal mode.

HiJackThis version 198.2 is now available.
If you do not already have it installed, download it from here:
http://downloads.net-integration.net/HijackThis.exe

Then run HiJackThis again and post a new log in this thread.

If you don't mind, I have a few questions.
- Do I need to get rid of any more of this stuff?
- Were each of the things I checked to fix in the HijackThis a separate virus or adware, etc? Or were they related to the original Trojan Horse I whined to you about?
- Was the ability to delete the updmgr folder a function of being in the safe mode, or the HijackThis program? It sure wouldn't delete earlier.
- Is there a resource that lists all of the above entries and gives some kind of definition? Some of them are obvious with the program names listed in them(if you can trust them), but I'd like to find out if more of that stuff is just wasting cycles, etc.

Again, I appreciate your help.
LoPhatPhuud
That has your log clean, you should be ok.

Quite often, files are in use or locked by another program. When you tried to remove updmgr it may have still had an open file. Rebooting in safe mode cleared it for removal.

Most of the items in a log are ok. THis is a dynamic field and exploits change each day, as do the entries and the associated files. Computer Cops maintians a current list of BHO's and Toolbars as well as startup items. This is all itesm reported and not all are bad. Spyware Blaster can be used to check for bad ActiveX modules since that is its main function.

It is always best to leave the diagnosis to those of us trained to analyze a log. Especially the more difficult exploits.

Your log is clean. The only thing you need to do is upgrade your Windows and Internet Explorer to SP2.

At last, your system is clean and free of spyware! Want to keep it that way?

Here are some simple steps you can take to reduce the chance of infection in the future.

1. Visit Windows Update: <-- YOU NEED TO DO THIS!!
Make sure that you have all the Critical Updates recommended for your operating system and IE. The first defense against infection is a properly patched OS.
a. Windows Update: http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

2. Adjust your security settings for ActiveX:]
Go to Internet Options/Security/Internet, press 'default level', then OK.
Now press "Custom Level."
In the ActiveX section, set the first option, 'Download signed controls', to 'Prompt; set the
second option, 'Download unsigned controls', to 'Disable'; and finally, set 'Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe" to 'Disable'.

3. Download and install the following free programs
a. SpywareBlaster: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
b. SpywareGuard: http://www.wilderssecurity.net/spywareguard.html
c. IE/Spyad: https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm

4. Install Spyware Detection and Removal Programs:
You may also want to consider installing either or both of AdAware (free version) and Spybot S&D (freeware). Use these programs to regularly scan your system for and remove many forms of spyware/malware.
a. AdAware: http://www.lavasoft.de/]http://www.lavasoft.de/
b. Spybot S&D: http://security.kolla.de/index.php?lang=en&page=download

5. Install 'Spoofstick"
Spoofstick is a simple browser extension that helps users detect spoofed (fake) websites. This extension is free and installs in Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox.
a. http://www.corestreet.com/spoofstick
