Hi megss73, and welcome Welcome.gif

First, you have the Peper Trojan (adware) that needs a special tool to remove it.

Download Newuninst.exe
http://downloads.subratam.org/Newuninst.exe

Double click on 'uninst.exe' and press *Uninstall*. Let it run and terminate. You must be online to have this work and do not block any attempts for the program to connect to internet if your firewall requests access.

Reboot your PC
....................................
Just to be that got it, download the free PeperFix tool, save it to your desktop, doubleclick on it, click 'Find and Fix', let it run and then and reboot your PC, again.

http://downloads.subratam.org/PeperFix.exe
............................
Uninstall Viewpoint from Add/Remove Programs in your Control Panel.
.....................................

Next:

1. Please make a copy of these instructions so you have them handy as the following steps will need to be done in SAFE MODE with IE closed

2. Reboot your PC into safe mode:
How to start the computer in Safe mode
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen...src=sec_doc_nam

3. Scan with HijackThis and checkmark the following entries, then press *fix checked*

That's a clean log megss ahah.gif

Now that your PC is clean, make sure all programs are running properly and then you'll need to reset your restore point in Windows XP.......why?

One of the best features of Windows ME or XP is the System Restore option, however if a malware infects a computer with this operating system it can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after malware removal.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Next, we highly recommend you get some extra protection to prevent future infections. Here are some things you can do and some free programs to help :).

How to Stop Hijackers & Spyware Infections, And other malware too!

Watch Windows Update closely for Service Pack 2 for XP coming very soon. Get it when available and it will address numerous security issues in your Operating System and IE :)
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

I also highly recommend to get the free tool, Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA) from Microsoft to analyze your PC security for prevention purposes.

MBSA Version 1.2 will scan for common system misconfigurations on Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 systems. This program will identify the system security weaknesses in your browser and operating system and provides easy instructions to correct them. This includes any missing critical Windows security updates, system vulnerabilities and your IE Browser security settings. Get the download here:
Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/...s/mbsahome.mspx

You might also consider an alternative browser and use IE only when needed for sites that require ActiveX and are trusted (like Windows update or the online virus scanners). I use Firefox for 99% of my everyday surfing (using it right now in fact). It's free and very easy to setup, understand and use without many of the vulnerabilities that IE has. Or feel free to search around for info on other alternative browsers.
