Hello :)

I've been hit with something bad which breached my ZoneAlarm Pro firewall and tampered with my Norton AntiVirus 2004. In trying to clean my PC myself, I un-installed my Norton and ZoneAlarm programs, ran updated versions of AdAware, SpyBot and PC DoorGuard, then re-installed Norton and ZoneAlarm, but I still have a problem.
When re-installing ZoneAlarm, I recieved notification of a "new network with a subnet mask".... is this normal??

When I ran AdAware, I saw something about Netscape Navigator flash up on the screen..... I've never (intentionally) put Netscape on my PC, so I found this to be strange.
Also, when I ran Spybot I saw that the registry of my RealPlayer was changed. I un-installed RealPlayer at that time.

After the re-installation of my virus protection and firewall, I ran some more virus and trojan detector programs and I think I am still badly infected.


I scanned with HijackThis and I'm posting my log here in hopes that a kind expert can give me assistance in ridding my PC of unwanted pests. I am very appreciative of any help I may recieve.

Your system is clean but I have a suggestion and a question.

First, the suggestion:
I recommend you use Add/Remove Programs to uninstall Messenger Plus. While the program itself contains no spyware/malware, many systems using it eventually end up with LOP and other exploits infecting the computer.


And now the question:
This program 'C:\Windows\supervisor.exe' appears to be legitimate program, however its purpose has high security concerns, especially if you did not install it.

From this web page: http://alexant.softdepia.com/ comes the following: "The basic purpose of the program is a file manager with unlimited access to disks of network computers."

It's good news to hear that my system looks clean, but I recieved this message (that refuses to be closed) when i signed on my PC after being offline a few hours... and, my firewall has again been disabled...

I'm convinced that i am infected or worse....


The program 'C:\Windows\supervisor.exe' doesn't sound familiar to me at all..... I've no clue what this is or where it has come from.

and, I've been extremely cautious of Messenger Plus in the 6+ months that I've used it....but, I will seriously re-evaluate its value. Once upon a time, before I knew better and when I first signed on with them, I did agree to their 'sponsorship program' and was plagued with spyware (but have been clean for these last 6+months), so its clear that there is a risk with that program.

but, I think my problem is someting else.....

I just remembered that I cleaned a "TrojanDropper.Win32.Swicer" during my attempts to deal with my problem....maybe this is a clue as to why my infection isn't so evident from my HijackThis log? i don't know, but
I really feel that I opened up a really clever site with a very bad invader... i think i even know the website that messed me up.

Anyhow, why is my ZoneAlarm now disabled when i sign on.... it was fine when i logged off a few hours ago?

The error message form Zone Alarm would inidicate a corrupt module. You need to check with the ZA forums for spefics on cause and fix.

You might try an online AV scan to be sure you are clean:

Then look and see if you can find an entry in your Add/Remove programs for Supervisor or Lan Supervisor and uninstall it. IF you cannot find one, let me know and we can at least remove the registry entry.

ok, LoPhatPhuud, I ran two of the virus scan programs you recommend and both show that my PC is clean.

I do not have an entry in Add/Remove programs for Supervisor or Lan Supervisor. This program bothers me because I have only one PC in my home and it is not on a network.

OK, for the moment, lets disable that program.

Check the following items in HiJackThis:

Close all open windows except HiJackThis and press 'Fix Checked'.

Reboot.
Run HiJackThis again and post a new log in this thread.

I fixed the

I tried to sign in a couple of times and got this same error message. I then tried to reboot from Safe Mode and got the blue screen and fatal system error message. I then shut down power and when I rebooted I was able to logon and run the following HijackThis log.

As you have requested, I have emailed you the zipped file.
btw, just curious, why do want the file... for educational purposes?

OK, thanks for the file. I wanted to be sure it was not a dangerous file that needed to be removed. Since its use is dubious, but it may be legitimate, I wanted to leave it on your system. It is ok to leave, by the way. In the unlikely event it needs to be in startup again. You can create a short cut to it and put it in your Startup Folder. You can also use HJT restore facility to restore the registry entry as long as the backup exists.


Your log is clean. The only thing you need to do is upgrade your Windows and Internet Explorer to SP2.

At last, your system is clean and free of spyware! Want to keep it that way?

Here are some simple steps you can take to reduce the chance of infection in the future.

1. Visit Windows Update: <-- YOU NEED TO DO THIS!!
Make sure that you have all the Critical Updates recommended for your operating system and IE. The first defense against infection is a properly patched OS.
a. Windows Update: http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

2. Adjust your security settings for ActiveX:]
Go to Internet Options/Security/Internet, press 'default level', then OK.
Now press "Custom Level."
In the ActiveX section, set the first option, 'Download signed controls', to 'Prompt; set the
second option, 'Download unsigned controls', to 'Disable'; and finally, set 'Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe" to 'Disable'.
