Full Version: Help with cmsdr.exe

Has anyone responded to this yet? I have the same issue with this cmsdr.exe.

I had gotten ride of it everywhere I can see in the registry, looked in services, config, etc. Files on the PC (was in prefetch and took out path). Looks like it's gone, goes away for 1 or two rebbots, then sure enough, when I boot it is there and have to kill it in task mgr before anything will load.

I have seen nothing else on the net about this - would love some help.
mmmaz
Here's my log. First thing that jumped out was the cvss.exe - I know that was trouble before but thought I got rid of it. Odd thing is there is no file in that path (was at one time if I recall). This is an old PC and my kids used to use it too.

Not sure if the cmsdr.exe thing is related to the cvss but either way - driving me crazy. BTW: I no longer use IE.

Thanks for any help

Please do not HiJack someone else's thread. ALways start your own.

You may have a CWS variant requiring special treatment.

First:
Download DLLCompare from here:
http://download.broadbandmedic.com/DllCompare.exe

Copy the program to its own folder and double click on it.
Press the 'Run Locate.com' button

That should finish quickly, then:
Press the 'Compare' button.

That will run for a while longer.

When it is finished, press the 'Make A Log of What was Found' button
and post the log in this thread.

Press 'Exit' to quit program.

Then:
HiJackThis version 198.2 is now available.
If you do not already have it installed, download it from here:
http://209.133.47.12/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe
http://downloads.net-integration.net/HijackThis.exe
http://www.computercops.biz/downloads-file-328.html

Please install this version and post a new log in this thread, along with the info from above.

Hi sorry - wasn;t sure of the protocall. And you'll have to forgive me if all this is obvious

Here is what I found - it seems this cvss.exe, smss.exe (not microsofts) and cmsdr were all related.

The only way I got to it was to get a process viewer that shows hidden processes as well. When I did, I killed the cvss program and then everything showed up - meaning:

That cmdr.exe file shoed in the system32 dir. So did cvss.exe. Then I looked in the registry and there they were under several locations. The local machine and current user RUN and also under MSN manager. deleted those keys. So in theory the files are gone and the registry files are gone. It had hidden them from view when running, and obviously ran on startup via MSN messengers autostart.

I will still do what you suggested - where should I put the new hijack log?

Thanks much
LoPhatPhuud
Post the new log in this thread.

Hi again, thanks for the help. Well.. I thought I may have gotten it - but darned if it didn't come up again on reboot. Here's what happened again, and what I did before this most recent log below:

Reboot came up and did not load explorer - had to open task manager, quit CMSDR.EXE then explorer and rest open. Then ran a process viewer that shows hidden and saw CVSS.EXE running. Hard killed that. Killing that then seems to reshow that CVSS.EXE and CMSDR.EXE and ADOLIB32.DLL (not sure on this one but was creasted same time) all showed up in \SYSTEM32. I deleted them off from there and looked for any other files created same time - nope

Then in registry they of course were back again (only showing after killed the app). Found CVSS in two locations this time; 1. HK_LOCAL\SFTWR\MICR\SHARED TOOLS\
MSCONFIG\STARTREG\MSNMGR - I deleted the whole key because it looked like just for CVSS. 2. \CURRENTVER\RUN

Found CMSDR also in two locations in the registry: 1. HK\LOC\MIC\ACTIVE SETUP\INSTALLED COMPONENTS\ 78cec095-12bc-44ef-8f33-sffeaf-88eaf3
and 2. \INSTALLED COMP\ a8011e06-14ds-44e9-a774-3e2912ce6b07
I deleted both of these,

So..... probally the same story as before, I think I have it all, but after the second boot - pow - back again. I think I'll not reboot again until I am fairly sure it's gone.

Also, I have ran CWShredder,. Ad-Aware, etc. None seem to get it.

Remember, log will not show cvss running now becuase of what I did - but i did this before also and it came back.

Thanks again

Oh forgot to mantion also, cvss (with a path to \SYSTEM32) shows up in my startup on msconfig. I also unchecked it there. Now reboot starts under custom so I guess I need to learn how to delete from startup tab?? (It's not in the startup directory) ;)
LoPhatPhuud
OK, first, I requested you run a program (dllcompare) and that you post a new log using HiJackThis 198.2, So far, you have not done either one.

If you want continued support from this forum, please comply with our directions.
mmmaz
Actually. I thought I did both. I ran the comparedll three times and it doesn't want to create a log. I will try to redowload right after this and see if I can do again. The Hijack I didn;t notice I did not have the new version. Anyway.... here's the new Hijack and the dll will follow right after assuming a new one works

Download FindnFix.exe from here:
http://www10.brinkster.com/expl0iter/freeatlast/FNF/ or
http://downloads.subratam.org/FINDnFIX.exe

Double Click on the FindnFix.exe and it will install the batch file in its own folder.

Open the FindnFix folder and double click on !LOG!.bat

IMPORTANT! Before you run this tool please close ALL running programs and ALL open windows except for the FindnFix folder.

Relax, sit back and wait a few minutes while the program collects the necessary information.

*NOTE:If your AntiVirus is running a scriptblocker, when you run this tool, you will probably receive an alert warning you that the script is running. "Allow" the script to run.

When the program is finished:

Open the FindnFix folder.
1. Post the contents of Log.txt in this thread.
2. Attach file Win.txt to the same post. (Please attach, do not post)

(If this board does not provide the ability to attach documents to your post, then please post the Win.txt file in this thread)

=== Step 2 - Delete Hidden DLL ===
Open the FindnFix folder.
Open the keys1 folder.

Get ready to restart!
Double click on FIX.bat.
You will get an alert of ~20 secs before reboot.
Allow it to reboot!

On restart, Open C:\Windows\System32\and look for WDMOD.DLL(it should be visible)
Right click on the file, select 'Cut'
Go to C:\FINDnFIX\junkxxx\ (create if necessary) and select 'Paste'
Hit 'ok' when/if asked about 'read only' file move.
Verify that the file is indeed in the junkxxx folder.

Go up one level to the main FindnFix folder.
DoubleClick on RESTORE.bat.
When it is finished, open the FindnFix folder.
Post the contents of Log2.txt in this thread.

Hi there again. BTW, thanks for your help. When I first came to the board I came via a search on cmsdr, and hense went straight to the page that mentioned it. I did not look around the site, and assumed it was several people who posted - who may have had a similar issue and shared insight.

So far on this (and seems most others) issues, it is a few people like yourself who help out the masses - that's very cool. Thanks, it is appreciated.

Now my issue: Posted the log below after following directions - BUT - may be one issue. I had copied the WDMOD.dll file to the folder \junkxxx and was online looking at some brick I need to buy (long story) anyway the pdf file made me lock and when I rebooted, Norton started auto and found the file in the folder and auto deleted it. I had had Norton disabled all up to this not sure how it started. Also not sure if that matters, but that one file is for sure gone now.

Take care, Mike

Dang it - as you can see from the log, it's back again. The CVSS.EXE was a hidden task running again. I forced it shut afer running the log and sure enough, cmsdr.exe, cvss.exe and adolib32.exe all showed up in \system32 again.

In registry under \run was a value MSN Manager cvss.exe.

Here is some other poking around thoughts/odd things. It seems every time this happens a file named MSHTA.EXE has been accessed around the same time as these are "re"created. That's a MS file right?

Other files that seem to change then too are \windows\ulap132.dll (which I can;t seem to find on any search as a real file. and WPA32.dll - same thing.

Also when I was on last night Norton gave me a warning that "CFMGR.EXE is trying to access the Internet" - I did a search on that file and nothing showed up on the whole net? I also see it here on the Hijack log, but does not show up when I search my PC. Seems more than odd.

Also, every time these files show up again, the pointing to sp.html under my user shows up - here on the hijack log, and in places in the registry.

_________________________

So..... is it possible that the MS file MSHTA.exe is allowing all of this to be recreated? Is it happening via MSN messenger (which I would use but Norton runs it aoutmatically of course). Not that it's not on my regardless but it would kind of be ironic if I wouldn't at least be recreating these if MSN messanger wasn't running.

Anyway..... WOW... never knew this stuff could be this tough.! Any thoughts? As always, thanks for the help.

Sorry, I should have warned you. All we did so far was remove the hidden dll that regenerates a lot of this. There appears to be more than on regenerating infection but now to work on them. The file cvss.exe was not mentioned but we will work on that too, although it may be the next log.

First:
=== Download and Install About:Buster ===
Please download About:Buster from one of the following locations:
http://www.atribune.org/downloads/AboutBuster.zip or
http://tools.zerosrealm.com/AboutBuster.zip

Unzip about:buster to it's own folder.
Reboot in Safe Mode.
Close all open windows.

Open the about:buster folder.
Double click on the program.

Next click 'OK'and allow the program to run. (it may take a few minutes)

Make a copy of the log it creates for posting later.

Then run the About:Buster a second time just to be sure it got everything.

Make a copy of the log it creates again.

Reboot.

Post both of the about:buster logs in this thread.

Second:
Before we begin, please be sure that HiJackThis is in its own folder. This will allow us to use backups to restore entries if necessary. Please do not put HiJackThis in a temporary folder, or on the Desktop. I suggest using 'c:\program files\hijackthis\' or C:\HiJackThis\, but any name you choose is fine.

Check the following items in HijackThis.

Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked.

Reboot in Safe Mode*, delete the following: (you may need to show hidden files**)

Also, uncheck the boxes for hiding known file extensions and hiding protected operating system files. We want to see it all. When we finish here, it would be a good idea to rehide the protected operating system files but leave the rest to be shown.

Reboot in normal mode.

That appears to have it but it also looks like that log was produced from Safe Mode.

To be sure, please post a new HiJackThis ilog n this thread run from a normal boot.

Hi Lo....

Well, no luck still. I did a reboot regular (selective) and was okay, then just to make sure rebooted right away again, and boom - there it was hidden. CVSS.EXE running but hidden it task manager (shown in another process viewer program). Hard kill on it then CVSS.EXE, CMSDR.EXE, and ADOLLIB32.DLL showed up again in my \System32 directory. Also of course the RUN string you see in the log showed up in the registry again. Though this time it was only under HKLM...RUN versus all the other places too.

I assume there is obviously another regenerator. But it must be hidden well becuase I have looked at all files from the date of infection (the fist time I saw these all were dated 7/22) at same time - and nothing.

The log will also show that I disabled Messenger becuase I noticed it seemed to keep startting after I launched it and I figured it may be getting in via that mechanism, though obviously not seeing it was diabled here and still shows up.

Any ideas? Thanks

Hi again

(In addition to the above message) I was just reading the thread of the other guy with what sounds like the same thing I have. I figured I would give a shot to what you had suggested he do.

I undeleted the ADOLIB32.DLL file and tried that RUN command you suggested.

I got back this message: "C:\Windows\system32\ADOLIB32.DLL was loaded, but the DL Unregister Server entry point was not found"

Thanks, please see above last message if you did not yet notice Thanks
LoPhatPhuud
OK, I believe that msoffice.exe is also bad. We'll remove it for the time. Office 11 (office2003) does not use a file by that name.

First:
Check the following items in HiJackThis:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSN Manager] C:\WINDOWS\System32\cvss.exe
O4 - Global Startup: msoffice.exe

Close all open windows except HiJackThis and press 'Fix Checked'.

Then:
Reboot into safe mode and delete the following files:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\cvss.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\cmsdr.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\adolib32.dll

Last:
Reboot in normal mode.

Run HiJackThis and post a new log in this thread.

Also advise of any error messages on startup!!!
mmmaz
Okay - one more. I uploaded the files to that Kapersky.com site too. All three

(CVSS.EXE, CMSDR.EXE. ADOLIB32.EXE)

came back and said they were infected with the TrojanDownloader.Win32.Qoologic.b Virus. But the CVSS.EXE file also came back with another in addition it said it was:

"Packed with ASPack" whatever that means....

Waiting for your response to my last post.
mmmaz
Hi Lo,

Sorry I missed you last message there.

Well... right now I am awfully excited becuase that (so far) seems to have done it. I used HijackThis to fix that msoffice.exe. I had already deleted previous copies of the other files. I then rebooted, twice in fact just in case, and they did not show up again this time. No hidden CVSS.EXE process, no CVSS.EXE, CMSDR.EXE, ADOLIB32.DLL files in the \ststem32 directory. And no strings of cvss or cmsdr in a registry search.

Could be it! But here's the log.

Again, you da' man. The site take donations? I'd rather give my next $70 to folks like yourself who help out than Symantec.

Mike

Your log is clean. The only thing you need to do is upgrade your Windows and Internet Explorer to SP2.

At last, your system is clean and free of spyware! Want to keep it that way?

Here are some simple steps you can take to reduce the chance of infection in the future.

1. Visit Windows Update: <-- YOU NEED TO DO THIS!!
Make sure that you have all the Critical Updates recommended for your operating system and IE. The first defense against infection is a properly patched OS.
a. Windows Update: http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

2. Adjust your security settings for ActiveX:]
Go to Internet Options/Security/Internet, press 'default level', then OK.
Now press "Custom Level."
In the ActiveX section, set the first option, 'Download signed controls', to 'Prompt; set the
second option, 'Download unsigned controls', to 'Disable'; and finally, set 'Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe" to 'Disable'.

3. Download and install the following free programs
a. SpywareBlaster: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
b. SpywareGuard: http://www.wilderssecurity.net/spywareguard.html
c. IE/Spyad: https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm

4. Install Spyware Detection and Removal Programs:
You may also want to consider installing either or both of AdAware (free version) and Spybot S&D (freeware). Use these programs to regularly scan your system for and remove many forms of spyware/malware.
a. AdAware: http://www.lavasoft.de/]http://www.lavasoft.de/
b. Spybot S&D: http://security.kolla.de/index.php?lang=en&page=download

5. Install 'Spoofstick"
Spoofstick is a simple browser extension that helps users detect spoofed (fake) websites. This extension is free and installs in Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox.
