I am networked to my wifes system. I am currently running Win98SE. Nortons tells me that the system is clean, however trend micro claims to find and clear a trojan that it doesn't name. After the scan it requests I reboot to run a trojan cleaner. After this if I rescan it claims to find an unnamed trojan again. My wife is having trouble with bkdr.berbew.I, but I'm unsure if its the same one.

Your wife porbably has some spyware/malware on her computer. The fdetection bkdr.berbew is usally associated with it. Run HiJackThis from her computer and post the log here (separate thread, please).

Here are some simple steps you can take to reduce the chance of infection in the future.

1. Visit Windows Update: <-- YOU NEED TO DO THIS!!
Make sure that you have all the Critical Updates recommended for your operating system and IE. The first defense against infection is a properly patched OS.

2. Adjust your security settings for ActiveX:]
Go to Internet Options/Security/Internet, press 'default level', then OK.
Now press "Custom Level."

second option, 'Download unsigned controls', to 'Disable'; and finally, set 'Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe" to 'Disable'.

3. Download and install the following free programs

If you are on a broadband connection, you may want to consider purchasing an inexensvie four port wired router and take ICS off your computer. Prices are reasonablle enoufgh, at least in the USA.
