I have windows xp with Norton 2004 av installed. Nortons is telling me my system is virus free, but when I run Trend Micro it continuously comes up with a message to say malaware bkdr.berbew.I has been found and cleaned. Once the scan is finished, if I run it again, it just keeps saying its found and cleaned. I've updated Norton, run it in safe mode. I've followed the symantec manual removal information and still trend says its there, but Norton doesn't.

Here is my log. I have to go to University for the day but will check when I get home. Thanks in advance for any help.

Just checking in. If no one can help, maybe you can direct me to somewhere that can?
Thanks :)

Before we begin, please be sure that HiJackThis is in its own folder. This will allow us to use backups to restore entries if necessary. Please do not put HiJackThis in a temporary folder, or on the Desktop. I suggest using 'c:\program files\hijackthis\' or C:\HiJackThis\, but any name you choose is fine.

Check the following items in HijackThis.
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://qau10.hpwis.com/
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://qau10.hpwis.com/

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [System Update] C:\WINDOWS\System32\bnbemjh.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows Update] C:\WINDOWS\System32\bshtsdqf.exe

Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked.

Reboot in Safe Mode*, delete the following: (you may need to show hidden files**)
C:\WINDOWS\System32\VTTimer.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\bnbemjh.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\bshtsdqf.exe

*How to Boot into Safe mode: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen...001052409420406
**Show Hidden and System files and folders
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

Also, uncheck the boxes for hiding known file extensions and hiding protected operating system files. We want to see it all. When we finish here, it would be a good idea to rehide the protected operating system files but leave the rest to be shown.

Reboot in normal mode.

HiJackThis version 198.2 is now available.
If you do not already have it installed, download it from here:
http://209.133.47.12/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe
http://downloads.net-integration.net/HijackThis.exe
http://www.computercops.biz/downloads-file-328.html

Then run HiJackThis again and post a new log in this thread.

Hi, thanks for your help. I followed all of your steps. When I rebooted in safe mode, those three files did not show up. I made sure that hidden files were displayed etc, and searched for each of them separately but they weren't there.

Here is my new log after following your request.

At last, your system is clean and free of spyware! Want to keep it that way?

Here are some simple steps you can take to reduce the chance of infection in the future.

1. Visit Windows Update: <-- YOU NEED TO DO THIS!!
Make sure that you have all the Critical Updates recommended for your operating system and IE. The first defense against infection is a properly patched OS.
a. Windows Update: http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

2. Adjust your security settings for ActiveX:]
Go to Internet Options/Security/Internet, press 'default level', then OK.
Now press "Custom Level."
In the ActiveX section, set the first option, 'Download signed controls', to 'Prompt; set the
second option, 'Download unsigned controls', to 'Disable'; and finally, set 'Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe" to 'Disable'.

3. Download and install the following free programs
a. SpywareBlaster: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
b. SpywareGuard: http://www.wilderssecurity.net/spywareguard.html
c. IE/Spyad: https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm

4. Install Spyware Detection and Removal Programs:
You may also want to consider installing either or both of AdAware (free version) and Spybot S&D (freeware). Use these programs to regularly scan your system for and remove many forms of spyware/malware.
a. AdAware: http://www.lavasoft.de/
b. Spybot S&D: http://security.kolla.de/index.php?lang=en&page=download

5. Install 'Spoofstick" from here: http//www.corestreet.com/spoofstick/. Spoofstick is a simple browser extension that helps users detect spoofed (fake) websites. This extension is free and installs in Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox.

For more information about Spyware, the tools available, and other informative material, including information on how you may have been infected in the first place, please check out this link: http://forum.gladiator-antivirus.com/index...?showtopic=9857

Good luck, and thanks for coming to our forums for help with your security and malware issues.

Thanks so much once again. I've followed your instructions and hopefully thats the end of it. It's the first time I haven't been able to clear out a virus myself and it was driving me batty

I've run Trend Micro again, and yet again it tells me that its found and cleared bkdr.berbew.I. I've also run norton who says its clear, panda says the same. Adaware isn't finding anything and I've got the other programs recommended running. So could this be a bug in trend? I've used trend as a back up checker for a few years now and this is the first time its told me its cleared a trojan but not found any infected files, and certainly the first time it just keeps saying over and over that the same trojan has been cleaned. When I go through the manual removal process, the registry keys that are apparently added are never there.

Here is my hijackthis log again just to be sure, but I'm definitely starting to wonder if its trends problem and not mine.

Your log is clean. It may well be a false Positive. Try two of these Online Scans and see what they come up with. It certainly can't hurt.

Please go here and do an AV scan at one (preferably two) of the following:
Panda's Active Scan
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/co...n_principal.htm

RAV Antivirus Online Scan
http://www.ravantivirus.com/scan/

eTrust AV web scanner (Computer Associates)
http://www3.ca.com/virusinfo/virusscan.aspx

Ok, I ran panda last night and it came up clear. I've just finished the eTrust and RAV ones and they're also clear. So I guess its safe to ignore trends warning now.

My husband has posted on here also with a similar problem with trend, I'll get him to run these extra scans also and fingers crossed thats the end for both of us :)
carkisser
Oh, and forgot to add. THANK YOU so very much for all of your help. I really appreciate it. :thumb:

3. If you so desires..

You could download and run this free AV. It might well do a better job of cleaning as it is based on Kaspersky.
