Gladiator Security Forum > Malware Help Forum > HELP! Think you are Infected?
ConfusedKid
Hi,

Here's whats happening:

My hompage keeps getting set to about:blank

I keep getting pop ups saying that my pc is infected

I notice that my pop mail seems to be sending out messages automatically, although there is no record of out messages.

People in my hotmail address list are also getting messages from me that I didn't send.

I used to always run Spybot to clean out my system but now it has no effect. I also ran Adaware and Spysweeper, both of which removed some spyware but it still keeps coming back.

And here is my Hijack This log:

Any help is greatly appreceated,

ConfusedKid.
LoPhatPhuud
Download FindnFix.exe from here:
http://www10.brinkster.com/expl0iter/freeatlast/FNF/ or
http://downloads.subratam.org/FINDnFIX.exe

Double Click on the FindnFix.exe and it will install the batch file in its own folder.

Open the FindnFix folder and double click on !LOG!.bat

IMPORTANT! Before you run this tool please close ALL running programs and ALL open windows except for the FindnFix folder.

Relax, sit back and wait a few minutes while the program collects the necessary information.

*NOTE:If your AntiVirus is running a scriptblocker, when you run this tool, you will probably receive an alert warning you that the script is running. "Allow" the script to run.

When the program is finished:

Open the FindnFix folder.
1. Post the contents of Log.txt in this thread.
2. Attach file Win.txt to the same post. (Please attach, do not post)

(If this board does not provide the ability to attach documents to your post, then please post the Win.txt file in this thread)
ConfusedKid
Sorry this took so long but here are the results of Findnfix and the win.txt is also attached:

(I have a Japanese system so there are some strange characters like the ones below)

The list will produce a small database of files that will match certain criteria.
Ex: read only files, s/h files, last modified date. size, etc.
The filters provided and registry scan should match the
corresponding file(s) listed.
ササササササササササササササササササササササササササササササササササササ
Unless the file match the entire criteria, it should not be pointed to remove
without attempting to confirm it's nature!
ササササササササササササササササササササササササササササササササササササ
At times there could be several (legit) files flagged, and/or duplicate culprit file(s)!
If in doubt, always search the file(s) and properties according to criteria!

The file(s) found should be moved to \FINDnFIX\"junkxxx" Subfolder

=== Step 2 - Delete Hidden DLL ===

Open the FindnFix folder.
Open the keys1 folder.

Get ready to restart!
Double click on FIX.bat.
You will get an alert of ~20 secs before reboot.
Allow it to reboot!

On restart, Open C:\Windows\System32\and look for LOGNO.DLL (it should be visible)
Right click on the file, select 'Cut'
Go to C:\FINDnFIX\junkxxx\ (create if necessary) and select 'Paste'
Hit 'ok' when/if asked about 'read only' file move.
Verify that the file is indeed in the junkxxx folder.

Go up one level to the main FindnFix folder.
DoubleClick on RESTORE.bat.
When it is finished, open the FindnFix folder.
Post the contents of Log1.txt in this thread.

=== Step 3 Cleanup ===
Open the FindnFix folder.
Open the Files2 folder.
Double Click on the ZIPZAP.bat.

It will quickly clean the rest and will make a copy of the bad file(s) in the same folder (junkxxx.zip) and open your email client with instructions.

Simply drag and drop the junkxxx.zip file from the folder into the mail message and submit to the specified addresses.

Please be sure to include a link to your log file in the email.

When done, please delete the entire FindnFix folder.

=== Clean Remaining Infection ===
Please Download CoolWebShredder, from
http://www.merijn.org/files/cwshredder.zip
http://www.zerosrealm.com/downloads/CWShredder.zip

Extract CWShredder to its own folder,
Click the 'Fix ->' button.
Make sure you let it fix all CWS Remnants.

Next:
Download the latest version of Ad-Aware at
http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/

After installing AAW, and before running the program, you NEED to FIRST update the reference file following the instructions here: http://www.lavahelp.com/howto/updref/index.html

Select 'custom options'.
Select your drive, scan and fix all it finds.

Last:

Post a new HiJackThis log in this thread.

=== End CWS about:blank Removal ===
ConfusedKid
I did everything but I was unable to go to the instructions about how to update the reference file for Adaware. I got sent to a page (not on the lavasoft site) that said it was under construction.

Anyway I got the latest updates and ran Adaware and then ran Hijackthis, heres the latest log:

Excellent, and sorry for that bad link but thanks for pointing it out to me.

Before we begin, please be sure that HiJackThis is in its own folder. This will allow us to use backups to restore entries if necessary. Please do not put HiJackThis in a temporary folder, or on the Desktop. I suggest using 'c:\program files\hijackthis\' or C:\HiJackThis\, but any name you choose is fine.

Check the following items in HijackThis.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winupdt] RUNDLL32.EXE c:\windows\aqimpborl.dll,_mainRD

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)

Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked.

Reboot in Safe Mode*, delete the following: (you may need to show hidden files**)
c:\windows\aqimpborl.dll

*How to Boot into Safe mode: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen...001052409420406
**Show Hidden and System files and folders
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

Also, uncheck the boxes for hiding known file extensions and hiding protected operating system files. We want to see it all. When we finish here, it would be a good idea to rehide the protected operating system files but leave the rest to be shown.

Reboot in normal mode.

HiJackThis version 198.2 is now available.
If you do not already have it installed, download it from here:
http://209.133.47.12/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe
http://downloads.net-integration.net/HijackThis.exe
http://www.computercops.biz/downloads-file-328.html

Then run HiJackThis again and post a new log in this thread.
ConfusedKid
I looked at the Hijackthis log and the item you said to check is not present:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winupdt] RUNDLL32.EXE c:\windows\aqimpborl.dll,_mainRD

But there is a very similar item in there:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winupdt] RUNDLL32.EXE c:\windows\hlmimpborl.dll,_mainRD

Here is the log again:

Looks like this is a random name dll that changes;

Please delete the one item that starts:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winupdt] RUNDLL32.EXE c:\windows\hlmimpborl.dll,_mainRD

The actual dll dll name may change again. Once you have removed the O4 entry, reboot and delete the dll that was named as well at the prior dll(s) if still present.

Then post a new HiJackThis log in this thread.

LoPhatPhuud
That looks clean. Let me know if you are having any specific issues.

Your log is clean. The only thing you need to do is upgrade your Windows and Internet Explorer to SP2.

At last, your system is clean and free of spyware! Want to keep it that way?

Here are some simple steps you can take to reduce the chance of infection in the future.

1. Visit Windows Update: <-- YOU NEED TO DO THIS!!
Make sure that you have all the Critical Updates recommended for your operating system and IE. The first defense against infection is a properly patched OS.
a. Windows Update: http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

2. Adjust your security settings for ActiveX:]
Go to Internet Options/Security/Internet, press 'default level', then OK.
Now press "Custom Level."
In the ActiveX section, set the first option, 'Download signed controls', to 'Prompt; set the
second option, 'Download unsigned controls', to 'Disable'; and finally, set 'Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe" to 'Disable'.

3. Download and install the following free programs
a. SpywareBlaster: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
b. SpywareGuard: http://www.wilderssecurity.net/spywareguard.html
c. IE/Spyad: https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm

4. Install Spyware Detection and Removal Programs:
You may also want to consider installing either or both of AdAware (free version) and Spybot S&D (freeware). Use these programs to regularly scan your system for and remove many forms of spyware/malware.
a. AdAware: http://www.lavasoft.de/]http://www.lavasoft.de/
b. Spybot S&D: http://security.kolla.de/index.php?lang=en&page=download

5. Install 'Spoofstick"
Spoofstick is a simple browser extension that helps users detect spoofed (fake) websites. This extension is free and installs in Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox.
a. http://www.corestreet.com/spoofstick

For more information about Spyware, the tools available, and other informative material, including information on how you may have been infected in the first place, please check out this link: http://forum.gladiator-antivirus.com/index...?showtopic=9857

Good luck, and thanks for coming to our forums for help with your security and malware issues.

Everything is fine with with my browser, but now when I startup get an error message:

RUNDLL

An error occured when reading the file c:\windows\aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaimpborl.dll,_mainRD
Cannot find designated module

I translated this messsage from Japanese so the message may be different to that of an English system, but I'm sure you can understand the meaning.

If I click OK the message goes away and I haven't noticed any problems with my computer - just this message on startup.

Check the following items in HiJackThis:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winupdt] RUNDLL32.EXE c:\windows\aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaimpborl.dll,_mainRD

Close all open windows except HiJackThis and press 'Fix Checked'.

Reboot.
Run HiJackThis again and post a new log in this thread.

That should do it. Once you have removed that entry, reboot and let me know if the message is still there.
ConfusedKid
I checked it , removed it and rebooted - no problems and no error message. Here is the latest log:
