I am having all sorts of trouble. I have a web page on my desktop that refuses to go away. My homepage is being redirected to ssearch.biz. My favorite program refuses to run anymore. I have tried scanning for viruses and spyware. Every time I think I have it under control something else happens. I most recently ran a scan from Trend Micro and it says I have JAVA BYTEVER A. I have no idea what that means or how to get rid of it. Please lend some professional assistance.

Go to this page and I suggest you get both free programs listed (Adaware and Spybot Search & Destroy). Get the updates for each and then scan with each one in safe mode. It may take several scans to get everything with a reboot inbetween each.

Then when you finally have no more *bad* items come up on either of those, download the program HijackThis also in this instruction below, and post your log to see what may remain.

If you did not intentionally install the MyWeb Speedbar or MyWay Searchbar you can remove it via Add/Remove programs in the Control Panel. It comes with the Smiley Central Fun Web products. OK. I did everything you suggested. I am fully updated from microsoft. The files from the Hijackthis log have been deleted. I don't really care to have the extra search bars so I deleted them. I think the WildTangent Software was on my computer when I got it. I don't use it so it can go. I was able to get rid of the web page on my desk top and my home page is now going where it is supposed to. My computer is still running really slow. I just recently got Roadrunner and I still feel like I am using dial up. Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide.

What new programs have you downloaded from the internet lately? Something has given you another bunch of new parasites and these usually come bundled with other *free* programs. But could have been picked up on a drive-by download or something. You do have new malware on here.

First - go to add/remove programs in your Control Panel and remove:

Adaware has a new edition out in the past couple of days. Uninstall your current version and download and install the latest version 1.02 from here:

Upon finishing the install it will update and scan your system - let it do that and fix any bad files found. Reboot and let it scan once more until no more bad items are found.

Then Scan with HijackThis and checkmark any of the following that may still be on your system, then press *fix checked*

And yes, downloading screensavers is probably where you got the new malware. You have to be very careful with what you download from the internet these days as there is no telling what parasites come bundled with the *free ride*.

There are a couple of orphaned entries you can fix with HijackThis. Just checkmark them and then press *fix checked*

One of the best features of Windows ME or XP is the System Restore option, however if a malware infects a computer with this operating system it can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after malware removal.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

Watch Windows Update closely for Service Pack 2 for XP coming very soon. Get it when available and it will address numerous security issues in your Operating System and IE :)

I also highly recommend to get the free tool, Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA) from Microsoft to analyze your PC security for prevention purposes.

MBSA Version 1.2 will scan for common system misconfigurations on Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 systems. This program will identify the system security weaknesses in your browser and operating system and provides easy instructions to correct them. This includes any missing critical Windows security updates, system vulnerabilities and your IE Browser security settings. Get the download here:

You might also consider an alternative browser and use IE only when needed for sites that require ActiveX and are trusted (like Windows update or the online virus scanners). I use Firefox for 99% of my everyday surfing (using it right now in fact). It's free and very easy to setup, understand and use without many of the vulnerabilities that IE has. Or feel free to search around for info on other alternative browsers.
