Last week you kindly helped my get rid of a hijacked homepage.

Here is the link to what we did last time:

http://forum.gladiator-antivirus.com/index...showtopic=16817

The same thing seems to now happen sporadically. After the fix, around 2 or 3 days later (having worked fine in between) the hompage was again reset. I ran Hijackthis and fixed what seemed to be the problem (i.e. the lines equivalent to those I have highlighted in bold in the log below) and also deleted the .dll file referred to in entry 02.

Again this seemed to fix the problem, only for it to reappear a couple of days later with an identical hijackthis log, other than the .dll file having a different name.

So, I have today ran Ad-aware, fixed all of the problems it came up with, and ran Hijackthis. Any suggestions as to what to do next?

Download FindnFix.exe from here:
=== Step 1 - Get File Info ===
You have a CoolWebSearch variant which requires special treatment to fix.

Download FindnFix.exe from here:
http://freeatlast100.100free.com/ or
http://downloads.subratam.org/FINDnFIX.exe

Double Click on the FindnFix.exe and it will install the batch file in its own folder.

Open the FindnFix folder and double click on !LOG!.bat
IMPORTANT! Before you run this tool please close ALL running programs and ALL open windows except for the FindnFix folder.

Relax, sit back and wait a few minutes while the program collects the necessary information.

*NOTE:If your AntiVirus is running a scriptblocker, when you run this tool, you will probably receive an alert warning you that the script is running. "Allow" the script to run.

When the program is finished:

Open the FindnFix folder.
1. Post the contents of Log.txt in this thread.
2. Attach file Win.txt to the same post. (Please attach, do not post)
(If this board does not provide the ability to attach documents to your post, then please post the Win.txt file in this thread)

I'm not sure I am doing this right. IT happened very quickly. Not sure whether it matters but the folder FINDNFIX did not extract itself into the C:\, there is another folder %SystemDrive% first.

Here is the log.txt file - there was no win.txt file:

If I move the FINDNFIX folder so it is in the C: directory I get the following log file (still no win.txt though):

The list will produce a small database of files that will match certain criteria.
You must know how to ID the file based on the filters provided in
the scan, as not all the files flagged are bad.
Ex: read only files, s/h files, last modified date. size, etc.
The filters provided should help narrow down the list, and hopefully
pinpoint the culprit.
Along with that, registry scan logged at the end should match the
corresponding file(s) listed.
»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»
Unless the file match the entire criteria, it should not be pointed to remove
without attempting to confirm it's nature!
»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»
At times there could be several (legit) files flagged, and/or duplicate culprit file(s)!
If in doubt, always search the file(s) and properties according to criteria!

The file(s) found should be moved to \FINDnFIX\"junkxxx" Subfolder

Any suggestions as to what to do next? Thanks.

Please download: "StartDreck", from here:
http://www.niksoft.at/_data/startdreck.zip

Unzip to its own folder, open the folder and double-click Startdreck.exe to start the program.

Click on "Config" and then click "Unmark All".

Check the following boxes only:
Registry -> Run Keys
System/drivers -> Running processes
Press "Ok"
Press "Refresh"

Press "Save" and select the location to save the log file
(the default is the same folder as Startdreck).

Locate the log you just saved and copy and paste the contents here.
petermc
Done, thanks.

Here is the log.

First please enable viewing of hidden/system files per the instructions here: http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

Next, please download Win98fix from here and unzip it to a folder on your desktop - http://downloads.subratam.org/Win98fix.zip . Open the folder, then double-click on Runfix.reg and answer Yes to the prompt about merging it to the registry.

Reboot.

Navigate to the C:\Windows\System folder and locate the file "Res.DLL" which should now be visible. Right-click on Res.DLL and choose Properties. Uncheck "Read-Only" if checked and click Ok, then delete the Res.DLL file.

Reboot again.

Download CWShredder to your desktop from here: http://www.downloads.subratam.org/CWShredder.exe
Double-click on it to run and click the "Fix" button.

Reboot one more time, scan again with Hijack This and post a new log here and we'll deal with anything that's left.
petermc
Ok, I've done all of that.

Res.dll was there and deleted.

CWShredder responded that the system was clean.

There are a couple of other .dlls in the System folder which I think are suspicious. These are ignnc.dll and comjdjd.dll. They were both created as the same time as Res.dll and I had already worked out that that was the time when the computer was infected. Should I delete them too?

The Hijackthis log is below.

That looks like a clean log. :thumb: I would recommend at some point looking into whether you need all of those programs loading at every boot though.

For now, I would install,, update and then scan with Ad-Aware and see if it picks up any left over files. The two you listed seem to be randomly named, as I can't find anything on them, so they're likely safe to remove (you might just rename them at first just to make sure no problems popup)

To reduce the chances of future spyware/hijacking problems, please follow the suggestions here: http://forum.gladiator-antivirus.com/index...?showtopic=9857

Many thanks for your help. It really is a fantastic service you provide.

I would clean up the files which run on start up, but I have no idea which ones are needed and which ones are not!
