Full Version: Well, I've got this about:blank thing others have.

I've looked around at others's threads, but even guys with stuff similar to what I have here make me wary...I don't want to do what they did, as facts seem to point to all problems being different in soemtimes seemingly minor ways. So here's what I have:

My IE homepage keeps resetting to about:blank, and it goes to search.com when I open it. Popups saying "You have spyware, go here to get rid of it" and such come up while on the net.

I tried Adaware, Spybot, and even that Panda scan thing, and nothing worked. Here's my hijackthis thing...let's see if I can do this right.

Hello Knightwolfe,

Wow, you have multiple problems there in addition to the about:blank CWS infection. So it is going to take a number of steps to get rid of everything.

Let's clean up a bit first with this program to narrow it down to the items that need special fixes.

Download Adaware (get the free edition)
http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/
(choose download from the lefthand menu)

Go to: Select Full Install and choose the download location of your choice (1.7mb)
Choose Download from
http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail.php3?fid=965718306 <--(I found FileForum easiest)

Be sure to UPDATE BEFORE SCANNING FIRST!! That is a very important step and I have included easy directions.

After download and installing first, please update the program. Just open Adaware and click on *Check for Updates Now* and then *Connect*. It will find a new reference-file. Click *ok* and let it download and install the updates by clicking on *Finish* .This will return you to the main screen. You should now see Reference File # : 01R324 22.06.2004 or higher listed.

In Ad-aware click the Gear to go to the Settings area.

The following items should be on a green check, not on a red X.

Under the Scanning button:

Scan within archives

Under Memory & Registry, Check EVERYTHING

In Check Drives & Folders, make sure all of your hard drives are selected

Under the Advanced button, check ALL under Log detail level (this makes it easier for visitors to the Lavasoft Support Forums to see what options you have selected should you require assistance.)

Under the Tweak button...

Some of these may not be an available option, depending on your version of Ad-aware and your version of Windows. Do not be concerned if you cannot select a certain item.

In Scanning Engine:

Unload recognized processes during scanning

Include info about ignored objects in logfile, if detected in scan

Include basic Ad-aware settings in logfile

Include additional Ad-aware settings in logfile

Include used command line parameters in logfile

In Cleaning Engine:

XP/2000: Allow unloading explorer to unload shell extensions prior to deletion

Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot

UNCHECK: Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion

Click Proceed to save these settings.

Don't scan yet, please. We need to do the next steps in SAFE MODE, so please copy these instructions so you have them handy since you will probably not be able to get online in safe mode.

Now, Reboot into safe mode (instructions included in case you need them.
How to start the computer in Safe mode
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen...src=sec_doc_nam

Open Adaware, Press *scan now* and put a dot in the box next to *use Custom scanning options*, then click *Next* to start your scan.

Checkmark any items found after scanning to remove (this will actually put them in quarantine and can recover from backup if any should not be removed).

Reboot your PC after cleaning with Adaware and scan again. Repeat the process until no further items are found as bad.

Scan once more with Hijackthis and don't remove anything yet in the log. Post it back here so we can see what may remain to be fixed :)

Any ideas?
CalamityJane
Oh, sorry, my apologies - I missed your previous post with the new log.

You have a CoolWebSearch variant which requires special treatment to fix.

Download FindnFix.exe from here: http://freeatlast.100free.com/

Double Click on the FindnFix.exe and it will install the batch file in its own folder.

Open the FindnFix folder and double click on !LOG!.bat
IMPORTANT! Before you run this tool please close ALL running programs and ALL open windows except for the FindnFix folder.

Relax, sit back and wait a few minutes while the program collects the necessary information.

*NOTE:If your AntiVirus is running a scriptblocker, when you run this tool, you will probably receive an alert warning you that the script is running. "Allow" the script to run.

When the program is finished:

Open the FindnFix folder.
1. Post the contents of Log.txt in this thread.
2. Attach file Win.txt to the same post. (Please attach, do not post)

To attach a file to your reply, type in the message in the reply box and scroll down to the section you see on the left side that says *File Attachments*. Click on the browse button and navigate to the Win.txt file, highlight it and click on the *open* button. Then press the *Add reply* button at the bottom.

This will add your reply AND the attached file :)

Ok, great job :thumb: That gives me the name of the hidden dll causing the reinfection. We'll get rid of it first and then can clean up the rest.

Open the FindnFix folder.
Open the keys1 folder.

If you receive an error while trying to edit, see below for instructions.

RightClick on the MOVEit.bat file, select--> edit.
Copy and paste this line into the batch file, replacing the line there.

move %WinDir%\System32\ msfgdc.dll %SystemDrive%\junkxxx\ msfgdc.dll

Save the file and close.

(Get ready to restart!)
Still in the keys1 folder, double click on FIX.bat.
You will get an alert of ~20 secs before reboot.
Allow it to reboot!

On restart, Open the FindnFix folder.
DoubleClick on RESTORE.bat.
When it is finished, open the FindnFix folder.
Post the contents of Log1.txt in this thread.

=== In the Event an Error Occurs Trying to Edit ===
Occasionally when trying to edit the MOVEit.bat file the following error occurs: "Windows cannot find "C:FINDnFIX\keys1\MOVEit.bat. Make sure you typed the name correctly then try again."

If that happens, please open Notepad or Wordpad. Choose *file* and then *open* the MOVEit.bat file and then you can replace the line as instructed above.

Hi KW

That's the old log. I am looking for this one (it has a 1 in the name)

Log1.txt
Knightwolfe

Well, I guess my n00bdom comes to the fore.

Sorry; I went ahead and edited that last one with the new one.
CalamityJane
No problem, that is easy to overlook since the file names look so much alike.

However, it didn't work (my bad, the copy text had an extra space in it)
Repeat this step:

Open the FindnFix folder.
Open the keys1 folder.

If you receive an error while trying to edit, see below for instructions.

RightClick on the MOVEit.bat file, select--> edit.
Copy and paste this line into the batch file, replacing the line there.

move %WinDir%\System32\msfgdc.dll %SystemDrive%\junkxxx\msfgdc.dll

Save the file and close.

(Get ready to restart!)
Still in the keys1 folder, double click on FIX.bat.
You will get an alert of ~20 secs before reboot.
Allow it to reboot!

On restart, Open the FindnFix folder.
DoubleClick on RESTORE.bat.
When it is finished, open the FindnFix folder.
Post the contents of Log1.txt in this thread.

Yes! ahah.gif

Open the FindnFix folder.
Open the Files2 folder.
Double Click on the ZIPZAP.bat.

It will quickly clean the rest and will make a copy of the bad file(s) in the same folder (junkxxx.zip) and open your email client with instructions.

Simply drag and drop the junkxxx.zip file from the folder into the mail message and submit to the specified addresses.

Please be sure to include a link to your log file in the email.

When done, please delete the entire FindnFix folder.

Now, clean once more with CWShredder and Adaware and let them remove any additional bad files found, if any.
Knightwolfe
Well, I hate to be even more of a problem child, and thank you again for your patience, but an unrelated problem caused some frustration here.

When it pulled up an email site, that one went white and was officially "Not Responding." I had to kill it. Now when I click on Zipzap, it says cannot find specified file.

Did I screw everything up? Or do you know which email I need to send to?
CalamityJane
Hi and good morning :)

Not to worry. The email step is just a followup to the author of FindnFIX, it's not a problem if it didn't work. That won't screw up anything at all.

Go ahead and delete the FindnFIX folder and proceed through the followup cleaning with Adaware and CWShredder and then let us see a fresh HijackThis log.
Knightwolfe
Holy moses, it's gone! Will you marry me?

Well, I'm glad you are pleased ahah.gif, but I'm already married tease.gif

Now, you'll remember back when we started I said you had multiple problems. We just got rid of the worst....there is still more to do. rolleyes.gif

First, go to Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel and look for these programs. Remove them if found.

MyWay

MyWeb Search

Fun Web Products

Viewpoint Manager

P2P Networking

P2P Networking is a totally useless Kazaa add-on, and it's been reported to be responsible for serious system slowdowns. You can uninstall P2P Networking through Add/Remove Programs. If/when asked whether you also want to remove Altnet components, say 'Yes'. The MyWay and MyWeb Search bars plus FunWeb Products came from Smiley Central. See the discussion here:

Reboot your PC and delete the following folders (if found)

C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch

C:\PROGRAM FILES\PERFECTNAV

C:\Program Files\MyWay

C:\Program Files\Viewpoint

C:\WINDOWS\System32\P2P Networking

Additionally, it is probably best to stay away from this site: http://www.xlocator.com
That came up on my Restricted Sites using IESPYAD and may have been the source of some of the malware on your system.

Scan once more with HijackThis and post a fresh log to see what remains. Did you update and run the Adaware program? I expect it would find a lot of other junk on your PC that HijackThis doesn't check for.

After reboot and now that your PC is clean, make sure all programs are running properly and then you'll need to reset your restore point in Windows XP.......why?

One of the best features of Windows ME or XP is the System Restore option, however if a malware infects a computer with this operating system it can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after malware removal.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Next, we highly recommend you get some extra protection to prevent future infections. Here are some things you can do and some free programs to help :).

I also highly recommend to get the free tool, Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA) from Microsoft to analyze your PC security for prevention purposes.

MBSA Version 1.2 will scan for common system misconfigurations on Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 systems. This program will identify the system security weaknesses in your browser and operating system and provides easy instructions to correct them. This includes any missing critical Windows security updates, system vulnerabilities and your IE Browser security settings. Get the download here:

You might also consider an alternative browser and use IE only when needed for sites that require ActiveX and are trusted (like Windows update or the online virus scanners). I use Firefox for 99% of my everyday surfing (using it right now in fact). It's free and very easy to setup, understand and use without many of the vulnerabilities that IE has. Or feel free to search around for info on other alternative browsers.
