I have run Adaware numerous times and it was not removing about:blank; then ran cwshredder which said it removed cws.searchx. I thought it was all cleared it up but my computer is still misbehaving. One error msg upon reboot is RUNDLL caused in IPHLPAPI.dll. I read somewhere that the CoolWebSearch trojan overwrites system files & cwshredder detects & removes those. Do I need to install a windows file or is there something still lurking on this computer???

Note: I have created a folder in c:\program files called Hijackthis and placed the Hijackthis.exe in there. I would appreciate some help here......thanks!!
Here is my log file:

I believe you have a CoolWebSearch Variant and we need to check this out before going any further.

Download: "StartDreck", from here:
http://members.blackbox.net/hp_links/21/ni.../startdreck.htm
http://www.niksoft.at/download/startdreck.htm

Unzip to its own folder and start the program,

Press 'Config'
Press 'Unmark All'

Check the following boxes only:
Registry -> Run Keys
System/drivers> Running processes
Press 'Ok'

Press 'Save' and select the location to save the log file
(default is the same folder as the application)

Post the log in this thread.
ylwgirl
yes something is still on here because all the keys etc. are back (I ran Hijack This). I have done what you said re startdreck. Here's the log:

=== Delete Hidden dll === (preferred method)
Download: "Win98Fix.zip" from here:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Win98fix.zip

Unzip to its own folder.

Open Folder and double click on RunFix.reg file.
Hit 'Yes' to merge it into your registry.
Restart your computer.

The bad file should now be visible so you can delete it.
Browse to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\COMPCC.DLL
Right click on it to remove any read only protection. Then delete it.

(If you cannot find the file, run the 'Who.bat' file in the folder.
The file will be found and listed.)

=== Clean Remaining Infection ===
Please Download CoolWebShredder from:
http://www.merijn.org/files/cwshredder.zip
http://www.zerosrealm.com/downloads/CWShredder.zip

Extract CWShredder to its own folder,
Click the 'Fix ->' button.
Make sure you let it fix all CWS Remnants.

Next:
Download the latest version of Ad-Aware at
http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/

After installing AAW, and before running the program, you NEED to FIRST update the reference file following the instructions here: http://www.lavahelp.com/howto/updref/index.html

Select 'custom options'.
Select your drive, scan and fix all it finds.

Last:
Post a new HiJackThis log in this thread.

I did everything you said. When I ran Adaware, it found one object but was unable to delete it. It said the file name is c:\_restore\temp\a0125704.cpy which of course doesn't show up if you do a file search. I'm posting both my Adaware log and my Hijack This log.

Great work. Your log is clean. The one item for AdAware is in your system restore area and now that you are clean, it needs to be reset.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows ME)
To disable System Restore:
1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the Performance tab, click File System, or press ALT+F.
3. On the Troubleshooting tab, click to select the Disable System Restore check box.
4. Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
5. To re-enable System Restore, follow steps 1-3, but in step 3, click to clear the Disable System Restore check box.

At last, your system is clean and free of spyware! Want to keep it that way?

Here are some simple steps you can take to reduce the chance of infection in the future.

1. Visit Windows Update: <-- YOU NEED TO DO THIS!!
Make sure that you have all the Critical Updates recommended for your operating system and IE. The first defense against infection is a properly patched OS.
a. Windows Update: http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

1. Adjust your security settings for ActiveX:]
Go to Internet Options/Security/Internet, press 'default level', then OK.
Now press "Custom Level."
In the ActiveX section, set the first option, 'Download signed controls', to 'Prompt; set the
second option, 'Download unsigned controls', to 'Disable'; and finally, set 'Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe" to 'Disable'.

2. Download and install the following free programs
a. SpywareBlaster: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
b. SpywareGuard: http://www.wilderssecurity.net/spywareguard.html
c. IE/Spyad: http://www.staff.uiuc.edu/~ehowes/resource.htm

1. Install Spyware Detection and Removal Programs:
You may also want to consider installing either or both of AdAware (free version) and Spybot S&D (freeware). Use these programs to regularly scan your system for and remove many forms of spyware/malware.
a. AdAware: http://www.lavasoft.de/
b. Spybot S&D: http://security.kolla.de/index.php?lang=en&page=download

For more information about Spyware, the tools available, and other informative material, including information on how you may have been infected in the first place, please check out this link: http://forum.gladiator-antivirus.com/index...?showtopic=9857
