CalamityJane
Hi Sun-Tzu

You have at least two very big problems. You have a worm and you have the newest variant of a hijacker called Coolwebsearch. Let me see what we can do

Print out these instructions so that you have them handy as some steps will need to be done in safe mode where you cannot go online.

1. First, Please make a new folder to put your HijackThis.exe into. Anywhere on your hard drive is fine other than your Desktop or the Temp folder. We suggest you use C:\Program Files\HijackThis but feel free to use any name or folder you like. Unzip HijackThis again and save the contents (Hijackthis.exe) to the new folder you made. Then navigate to it and run HijackThis from there. This is to ensure it makes the necessary backups for recovery if needed.

2. Next, make sure your PC is configured to show hidden files

Open Windows Explorer & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
Click "Apply" then "OK"

3. Next, go to Start->Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok

Scroll down and find the service called "Network Security Service". When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows.

4. Next, open Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del), highlight ipbf32.exe and click End Process. Do the same for msyn.exe.

5. Close all open windows, scan with Hijack This and put checks next to all the following, then click "Fix Checked":

Lookin better :)

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an x in the boxes next to these items, then press *fix checked*

Next clean out your temporary files and recycle bin.

Go to Start > Run and type in: controlmgr. Let it scan for files you can delete. Make sure that these at least are checked to remove:

Temporary Files
Temporary Internet Files
Recycle Bin

and Press OK.

Reboot your PC once more.

Scan again with HijackThis and post a new log please.

Also - new info on this variant. It has been discovered that it deletes 3 files from the infected system. Please check to see if you are missing any of these:

control.exe
Hosts (with no extension)
sdhelper.dll (only if Spybot S&D is installed)

To replace the missing files (if found)

Go here: http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/winfiles.html#control and download the version of control.exe for your operating system. If you are running Windows 2000, copy it to c:\winnt\system32\. For Windows XP, copy it to c:\windows\system32\.

Download the Hoster from here: http://members.aol.com/toadbee/hoster.zip
Press 'Restore Original Hosts' and press 'OK'
Exit Program.

If you have Spybot S&D installed you will also need to replace one file.
Go here: http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/winfiles.html#sdhelper and download SDHelper.dll. Copy the file to the folder containing you Spybot S&D program (normally C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy)

When you are done, please post the new HijackThis log - I want to make sure nothing has returned.

Your log looks good :victory:

Now that your PC is clean, make sure all programs are running properly and then you'll need to reset your restore point in Windows XP.......why?

One of the best features of Windows ME or XP is the System Restore option, however if a malware infects a computer with this operating system it can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after malware removal.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Next, we highly recommend you get some extra protection to prevent future infections. Here are some things you can do and some free programs to help :).

I also highly recommend this tool: Get the free tool, Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA) from Microsoft to analyze your PC security for prevention purposes.

MBSA Version 1.2 will scan for common system misconfigurations on Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 systems. This program will identify the system security weaknesses in your browser and operating system and provides easy instructions to correct them. This includes any missing critical Windows security updates, system vulnerabilities and your IE Browser security settings. Get the download here:

Stay safe and happy surfing!

One more little cleanup step I must have missed posting in my original instruction:

Go to Start --> Run and enter 'regedit', press 'Enter'

1. Navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\__NS_Service_3

If ( __NS_Service_3 exists) , right click on it and choose delete from the menu.

2. Now navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY___NS_Service_3

If (LEGACY___NS_Service_3) exists then right click on it and choose delete from the menu

If you see something very close to those names but not quite the same reply back here with the names you see :)

Exit regedit
