Hello,

I've had a lot of problems with this computer after coming home from the Memorial Day weekend.

First, it added about 7 new icon's to my desktop, including the imfamous_downloader and Lycos SideSearch.
It also added the virtual bouncer, ad blocker, WhenUSearch Toolbar, and Cloksync. Later on it also added
Earn and DealHelper.

Whenever the internet explorer, I have verison 5.5 or 5.9 I think, it went to the "Second Thoughts" page and
had many pop-ups which kept opening themselves.

At the advice of others on this site, I first loaded spybot and ran it in safe mode, twice. The first time it found 157,
but couldn't fix 7 of them which were in use. Then I reloaded it, it found 5 more and fixed all 5...what happened
to the other two, I don't know?

I also ran Hijackthis is safe mode, here is my log: I am running Windows ME

Any help will be much appreciated, we use this computer for multiple business.

From a family of self-employed people,

Thanks,
EastofKansasCity
LoPhatPhuud
You have a CoolWebSearch infection, among others. Let's get rid of that first, then we will tackle the rest with HiJackThis.

Please Download CoolWebShredder, from
http://www.merijn.org/files/cwshredder.zip
http://www.zerosrealm.com/downloads/CWShredder.zip

Extract CWShredder to its own folder,

Reboot in Safe Mode*** and run the program.

Click the 'Fix ->' button.

Make sure you let it fix all CWS Remnants.

Afterwards Reboot.

Then, please Post a fresh Hijack This log in this thread. Be sure the HiJackThis log is run in normal mode. We need to see all the normally running tasks.

Hello,

Sorry for the late reply, I was gone all last week. LoPhatPhud had replied to my previous post about
the problems I had. He told me I had the CWS virus, so I downloaded a CWShredder, ran that in safe
mode...and, well, it told me to reinstall windows media player. Unfortunately, this computer is a Compaq
piece of junk which has 3 "Quick Restore" CD's, and no CD which just says Windows ME. I was unable to
reinstall windows media player, but I did uninstall it, then I ran the CWShredder again, and it said it was
fixed.

Obviously there are still many problems with my computer, as LoPhatPhud had said. Here is my latest
Hijackthis log,

Windows Media Plater is downloaded and installed from Microsoft. Once your system is clean, go here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/default.aspx

Ok, still too much "garbage" there to use HiJackThis to remove it, so we will run AdAware and Spybot S&D first.

First:
Download the latest version of Adaware (get the free edition)
http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/
(choose download from the lefthand menu)

Go to: Select Full Install and choose the download location of your choice (1.7mb)
Choose Download from http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail.php3?fid=965718306 <--(I found FileForum easiest)

Be sure to UPDATE BEFORE SCANNING FIRST!! That is a very important step and I have included easy directions.

After download and installing first, please update the program. Just open Adaware and click on *Check for Updates Now* and then *Connect*. It will find a new reference-file. Click *ok* and let it download and install the updates by clicking on *Finish* .This will return you to the main screen. You should now see Reference File # :0qR314 02.06.2004 or higher listed.

Next, go to Settings (the gear icon at the top) and then *Scanning* and checkmark these items so they will be green:
Scan within archives
Scan my IE Favorites for banned URLS
Scan my hosts file

Then click *proceed* to save settings.

Click on *Tweak* next. And checkmark to make this green also:
Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion

Click on *proceed*

Next, from the main screen, click on *Start* (lower righthand corner) and put a dot in the box next to *use Custom scanning options*, then click *Next* to start your scan.

Checkmark any items found after scanning to remove (this will actually put them in quarantine and can recover from backup if any should not be removed).

Reboot your PC after cleaning with Adaware and scan again. Repeat the process until no further items are found as bad.

Second:
Then download and Install Spybot S&D from here:

http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=download

A short tutorial can be found here:

Be sure you bring Spybot S&D up to date. To bring SpybotSearch & Destroy up-to-date - Start the program and press the "Search for Updates" button. Put a check inside the items listed to download and install them.

Then click on "Check for Problems". Have Spybot remove/fix all that it lists in RED.

Once Spybot S&D is finished removing the items listed in red, close the program and restart your computer. If Spybot S&D says it needs to start up when your computer reboots - let it as it will be needing to finish the removal of some components of the spyware it found.

Last:
Now run HiJackThis again and post the log in this thread. There will probably be more to so.

LoPhatPhuud,

I did as you said, for the most part....I made a mistake which I didn't realize until the 3rd run of AdAware. The first time, it brought up 522 problems with 34 processes running, and a long list at the end which said it could not fix since the programs were running, but it was so long I did not see the OK at the bottom saying to fix after restart, so I just closed it from the X on top. Same thing the next time around, 101 objects. The third time, it found 21, I saw the okay at the bottom of the list this time, rebooted, and it said it took care of everything upon restart, where it only had 12 objects running.

I also searched for updates with sypbot, which I had previoulsy downloaded. It found 42 problems and fixed all of them.

So, finally, here is my HiJackthis log:

First:
From your log, your are apparently running without an AntiVirus product that provides realtime protection. If yuo are going to on the internet an AV is mandatory. Try this one, its free: http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php

Also, you should have a firewall as well, Zone Labs provides a free version of the popular ZoneAlarm.

Here is a link on free software you can install to protect your computer:
http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,7833532~mode=flat

Second:
You are running an outdated and therefore unsafe version of Internet Explorer.
You NEED to upgrade to IE 6.0 SP1
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

(Make sure you get the correct language version for your operating system! ).

Next, go to the Windows Update site, and download and install ALL Critical Updates on offer.
That will fix innumerable bugs, update a large number of important system files, and plug many security holes.

This step is mandatory if you are to avoid Gaobot, Sasser, and Help file exploits.

Third:
Before we begin, please be sure that HiJackThis is in its own folder. This will allow us to use backups to restore entries if necessary. I suggest 'c:\program files\hijackthis\' but any folder other than the Desktop or a temporary folder is fine.

Reboot in Safe Mode* and run HiJackThis. <-- IMPORTANT

Check the following items in HijackThis.

LoPhatPhuud,

I did everything as you said in your last post, and thank you, this computer seems to be working very well now. If there are any other problems still around, they are minor.

From your last post, I was only able to fix these problems, the other ones you listed no longer existed when I ran hijackthis.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [qm7V36Q] RSRUPG.EXE
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [bDo9RWcpQ] RTCHK10W.EXE

and of the files you told me to delete, the only one I could find, even with showing the hidden files, was:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\RTCHK10W.EXE
This file name also existed with a .LGC file, but I didn't delete it...I'm sure I could have, but I don't know what this file is or was anyway, but ZoneAlert tells me its trying to access the internet, I always deny it.

Before we begin, please be sure that HiJackThis is in its own folder. This will allow us to use backups to restore entries if necessary. Please do not put HiJackThis in a temporary folder, or on the Desktop. I suggest using 'c:\program files\hijackthis\' or C:\HiJackThis\, but any name you choose is fine.

LoPhatPhuud,

I ran hijackthis and found and fixed all 4 items you listed. However, I could only find
the middle one of these three to delete, the other two didn't exist, with all the files, hidden and operating system shown.

c:\Program Files\AutoUpdate\ <-- delete entire folder
C:\WINDOWS\system32\pcs\ <-- delete entire folder
C:\Program Files\Common files\WinTools\ <-- delete entire folder

Here is my latest HiJackThis log from running in normal mode.

At last, your system is clean and free of spyware! Want to keep it that way?

Here are some simple steps you can take to reduce the chance of infection in the future.

1. Visit Windows Update: <-- YOU NEED TO DO THIS!!
Make sure that you have all the Critical Updates recommended for your operating system and IE. The first defense against infection is a properly patched OS.
a. Windows Update: http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

1. Adjust your security settings for ActiveX:]
Go to Internet Options/Security/Internet, press 'default level', then OK.
Now press "Custom Level."
In the ActiveX section, set the first option, 'Download signed controls', to 'Prompt; set the
second option, 'Download unsigned controls', to 'Disable'; and finally, set 'Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe" to 'Disable'.

2. Download and install the following free programs
a. SpywareBlaster: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
b. SpywareGuard: http://www.wilderssecurity.net/spywareguard.html
c. IE/Spyad: http://www.staff.uiuc.edu/~ehowes/resource.htm

1. Install Spyware Detection and Removal Programs:
You may also want to consider installing either or both of AdAware (free version) and Spybot S&D (freeware). Use these programs to regularly scan your system for and remove many forms of spyware/malware.
a. AdAware: http://www.lavasoft.de/
b. Spybot S&D: http://security.kolla.de/index.php?lang=en&page=download
