My computer has been randomly popping up alerts that say basically 'blank cd in drive e, what do you want to do' and giving me a list of options, even when I have done nothing to activate it (and there's no CD in the drive, nor has one been put in there).

I have McAfee firewall installed, and run spyware searches (with AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy) several times a day, and McAfee virus scanner, yet this alert keeps popping up. And today, when running AdAware, an alert kept popping up saying, 'There is no disk in drive e. please insert a disc.' and now (even after restarting) Spybot keeps crashing when I open up.

First:
I recommend that you uninstall P2P Networking through Add/Remove Programs.
If/when asked whether you also want to remove Altnet components, say 'Yes'.

P2P Networking is a totally useless Kazaa add-on, and it's been reported to be responsible for serious system slowdowns.

Subsequently remove the P2P Networking folder in C:\Windows\System32, if still there.


Second:
Before we do anything, please move HiJackThis to a permanent folder. I suggest 'c:\program files\hijackthis\' but any folder other than the Desktop or a temporary folder is fine. This will allow us to use backups to restore entries if necessary

Reboot in Safe Mode* and run HiJackThis.

Check the following items in HijackThis.
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WinMX] C:\Program Files\WinMX\WinMX.exe -m

Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

Also, uncheck the boxes for hiding known file extensions and hiding protected operating system files. We want to see it all. When we finish here, it would be a good idea to rehide the protected operating system files but leave the rest to be shown.

Reboot in normal mode.

Here are some simple steps you can take to reduce the chance of infection in the future.

1. Visit Windows Update:
Make sure that you have all the Critical Updates recommended for your operating system and IE. The first defense against infection is a properly patched OS.
