Full Version: Dial up modem stays lit
Gladiator Security Forum > Malware Help Forum > HELP! Think you are Infected?
geministars
Last nite I was having problems loading web pages and my modem light was constantly on. Pages were loading very slow.
My internet provider asked to me to uncheck the internet connection firewall as that can cause problems and cause corrupted files. They also said there is a possibility that my computer was being attacked and to run antivirus and spybot.
I did that along with ad aware and nothing turned up. Told me to go to www.sarc.com to run virus scan which is free and that site is symantec. I ran my own norton because I just had the latest updates. Don't see the difference to me as the same. Modem light was staying on before but I can't find anything in internet security logs showing an attack. They also said the reason for being on is there can be line noise from telephone line. There is a test that the telephone company can do to see whats going on so I will call them.

Modem light not flashing at this time. What can be the causes of this? I did turn back on internet connection firewall as it is against what I have been reading for safeties sake.

Using Norton Internet Security 2003 and have all Windows XP updates.

Hi geministars!

I can't see anything strange there. Sometimes it happens to me also and I simply disconnect from the Internet and reconnect. But one thing you don't EVER AGAIN have to do is to disable your firewall. NEVER. If you do so you are opening a big door for everyone out there. Tell that employee he knows NOTHING about security, and he can't in any way say to you or other people to disable a firewall because it corrupts files (!!!!).

Be glad that your machine is ok and never ask them back. Just come here or go to the forum of your preference and ask for help.

Sorry for have not seen this post.

Cheers,

I got some help from dslreports.com and this is what I removed. Now modem lights do not stay on. I take it this red.clientapps is spyware. And I tightened up security when I went to link at the bottom. Pleas comment on this removal.

Thank You
geministars

With all windows closed, check these in HJT and remove them:

Reboot, rescan with HJT and post a follow up log here.

You have a lot of ActiveX on your machine, I suggest tighten your security to prevent further infection. Follow link-> »forums.net-integration.net/index.php?s..
FatsGordon
red.clientapps.yahoo.com directs you to www.yahoo.com. I don't consider it as being spyware or anything. Though I prefer the about:blank page and not a start page, I can't tell you to fix those entries because they are legit entries to me and they could be your start pages if you want.

The ActiveX issue is correct but I haven't seen any malicious ActiveX there.
geministars
One other question. The gentleman that gave suggestion as what to remove mentioned that there is alot of ActiveX on computer. Can it be removed with hijack this. I am curious about this.

Thank Yo}

This is about ActiveX in a HijackThis log (source: http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/htlogtutorial.html )

What to do:
If you don't recognize the name of the object, or the URL it was downloaded from, have HijackThis fix it. If the name or URL contains words like 'dialer', '-- Look for another playground --', 'free_plugin' etc, definitely fix it.

Javacool's SpywareBlaster has a huge database of malicious ActiveX objects that can be used for looking up CLSIDs. (Right-click the list to use the Find function.)
