First:
Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the bold below into a new text file. Save it as filename.reg and save it on your Desktop.

REGEDIT4
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\URLSearchHooks]
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\URLSearchHooks]
"{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497}"=""

Locate filename.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it.
You will receive a prompt similar to: "Do you wish to merge the information into the registry?".
Answer 'Yes' and wait for a message to appear similar to "Merged Successfully".

Second:
Reboot in Safe Mode* and run HiJackThis.

Check the following items in HijackThis.
F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\Windows\System32\wsaupdater.exe,

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {707E6F76-9FFB-4920-A976-EA101271BC25} - C:\Program Files\TV Media\TvmBho.dll
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {89044184-F260-4FDD-8FAB-2662814846E5} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\wmhshell.dll

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [TV Media] C:\Program Files\TV Media\Tvm.exe

Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

While still in Safe Mode*, delete the following: (you may need to show hidden files**)
C:\Program Files\WindowsSA\ <-- folder
C:\Program Files\TV Media\ <-- folder

*How to Boot into Safe mode: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen...001052409420406
**Show hidden files/folders as per the instructions here http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=190

Also, uncheck the boxes for hiding known file extensions and hiding protected operating system files. We want to see it all. When we finish here, it would be a good idea to rehide the protected operating system files but leave the rest to be shown.

Reboot in normal mode.

Post another HiJackThis log in this thread for review.

One item that got stuck or missed and you are clean.

Check the following itme in HiJackThis:
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [TV Media] C:\Program Files\TV Media\Tvm.exe

Close all windows except HiJackThis and press 'Fixed Checked'

That will leave your system clean, at last!

Here are some simple steps you can take to reduce the chance of infection in the future.

1. Visit Windows Update:
Make sure that you have all the Critical Updates recommended for your operating system and IE. The first defense against infection is a properly patched OS.
a. Windows Update: http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

2. Adjust your security settings for ActiveX:
Go to Internet Options/Security/Internet, press 'default level', then OK.
Now press "Custom Level."
In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to 'prompt', and 'Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe" to 'disable'.

3. Download and install the following free programs:
a. SpywareBlaster: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
b. SpywareGuard: http://www.wilderssecurity.net/spywareguard.html
c. IE/Spyad: http://www.staff.uiuc.edu/~ehowes/resource.htm

4. Install Spyware Detection and Removal Programs:
You may also want to consider installing either or both of AdAware (free version) and Spybot S&D (freeware). Use these programs to regularly scan your system for and remove many forms of spyware/malware.
a. AdAware: http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/
b. SpyBot S&D: http://security.kolla.de/index.php?lang=en&page=download

For more information about Spyware, the tools available, and other informative material, including information on how you may have been infected in the first place, please check out this link: http://forum.gladiator-antivirus.com/index...?showtopic=9857

Good luck, and thanks for coming to Gladiator Security Forums.

Thanks! The search assistant toolbar no longer comes up on a reboot! Thanks also for the suggestions on reducing steps. I do have my computer set to automatically run live update for windows and currently run Spybot & AdAware but, will follow your suggestion and add the other free programs.

One last question......I noticed the search assistant option still resides on my toolbar. Is there a way I can remove it as an option so it doesn't inadvertently become set again?

Thanks for all your help!
LoPhatPhuud
"......I noticed the search assistant option still resides on my toolbar."

That has me puzzled since we removed all of it. Can you post a screenshot of this?
somacs
I couldn't get it on this panel so I had to attach it. It's listed 4th down on the list. Also should the one titled "Links" be there?

Thanks again.
LoPhatPhuud
OK, now I know what you are talking about. It is going to take me a day or two to research this and find a safe means to remove it.

You can find it easily enough, by using Registrar Lite.
http://www.resplendence.com/download/reglite.exe

Its a nifty complement to regedit.

If you use search, click the button with the dots on it to select hte key and pick Hkey_Local_Machine, then saerch for Search Assistant it will find where the text is in the registry.

I need to find out where is it and how best to remove.

I'll post back here when I have an answer.
