Hello all. I think I have a problem. Every time I log onto the internet, my "home" has changed to something I've never heard of. I've ran spybot s&d and adaware 6.0 two different times and they have given me tons of stuff to remove. Please help!!!!!!!!!!! By the way, I am pretty bad with computers so detailed instructions would be greatly appreciated.

Extract CWShredder to its own folder,

Reboot in Safe Mode*** and run the program.

Click the 'Fix ->' button.

Make sure you let it fix all CWS Remnants.

Afterwards Reboot.

Ok, got rid of most of the CoolWebSearch, but not the jksearch.biz portion. Eventually this should be done by CWShredder but for now we will use a custom script.

First:
Download the attached Zip file and unzip it to its own folder

Open the final_varioussearch folder and double click on the final_varioussearch.vbs script file.

If you have script protection enabled, allow this script to execute

The script will prompt you to reboot your computer and also will give you the path and file name of the dll to delete. Copy it down for reference.

Reboot <-- IMPORTANT

Delete the dll file listed in the message box. (most likely system32.dll)

Second:
Before we do anything, please move HiJackThis to a permanent folder. I suggest 'c:\program files\hijackthis\' but any folder other than the Desktop or a temporary folder is fine. This will allow us to use backups to restore entries if necessary

Reboot in Safe Mode* and run HiJackThis.

Check the following items in HijackThis.

Also, uncheck the boxes for hiding known file extensions and hiding protected operating system files. We want to see it all. When we finish here, it would be a good idea to rehide the protected operating system files but leave the rest to be shown.

Reboot in normal mode.


Third:
1.Download the Host FileReader from here: http://members.shaw.ca/techcd/VB_Projects/
2. Install the program and run it.
3. Double click on the Hosts file name in the bottom window.
4. Press 'Reset Default' and press 'OK'
5. Exit Program (do not press 'Save Changes'


Fourth:
The jksearch.biz exploit has been known to corrupt Anti Virus update modules. Be sure you can update your AV product.


Last:
Run HiJackThis again and post a new log in this thread for review.

Well, all of step 1 is done and most of step 2 is done. I cant find the two files. I looked under my comp>windows and my comp>progam files>windows. No luck! Should I move on to step 3? Thanks for all of your help.

The default location is c:\windows\system32\system32.dll.

The script was should have supplied the ful lpath, but that's ok.

(now that you are past Step 1, I am goin to remove the script from my previous post. If we need it again, I will re-post it)

Reboot in Safe Mode* and run HiJackThis.

Check the following items in HijackThis.

Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

While still in Safe Mode*, delete the following: (you may need to show hidden files**)

Also, uncheck the boxes for hiding known file extensions and hiding protected operating system files. We want to see it all. When we finish here, it would be a good idea to rehide the protected operating system files but leave the rest to be shown.

Reboot in normal mode.

Here are some simple steps you can take to reduce the chance of infection in the future.

1. Visit Windows Update:
Make sure that you have all the Critical Updates recommended for your operating system and IE. The first defense against infection is a properly patched OS.

1. Adjust your security settings for ActiveX:
Go to Internet Options/Security/Internet, press 'default level', then OK.
Now press "Custom Level."
In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to 'prompt', and 'Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe" to 'disable'.

2. Download and install the following free programs]
