Hi,

Recently tried to install McAfee Internet Security suite on my PC (Did have NAV but scan kept failing where others succeeded). The software installed OK but on my first re-boot the PC blue screened once the active desktop was set (multiple tries gave the same result). I could only start the PC in safe mode and got the same problem if I activated the desktop. Could not run scans in safe mode, so I'm not sure if a virus is on the system. I eventually uninstalled the software, found your website, and followed some of the steps to getting a safe system. Is my PC clean? Will I ever be able to run McAfee? Would I want to with so many freeware programs available? Your help and advice would be greatly appreciated. Please see the attached log file.

Hi,

I think the cause of blue screen is because your log shows 2 antivirus is loading during start-up. Mcaffee and AVG.

Kindly remove one or disable one. Running 2 real-time protection by 2 or more antivirus program is not recommend because it can cause the above problem.

QUOTE
Is my PC clean? Will I ever be able to run McAfee?

Not clean. There are bad activex as per your log but don't worry we will help you to fix it :)
First you need to uninstall or disable 1 of your antivirus before we proceed in fixing the others. AVG or Mcafee (your choice).
You wrote that you eventually uninstalled the software, but the log is showing Mcafee is loading during startup
picard_uk
TY Donna,

I'll disable AVG for now and worry about McAfee later. What is the next step?
picard_uk
BTW

AVG only added after McAfee was removed.
Donna
OK. Select the following items in HijackThis:

O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} (RdxIE Class) - http://207.188.7.150/11d90dae63e511ae0a15/...ip/RdxIE601.cab
O16 - DPF: {AD7FAFB0-16D6-40C3-AF27-585D6E6453FD} - http://dload.ipbill.com/del/loader.cab

CLose all browser/windows except HijackThis then click Fix button.

Kindly restart then post a fresh log.

This means the uninstallation of Mcafee is somehow not successful because it is still in your startup entries.

Does Add/Remove Programs is still showing Mcafee in the list?
picard_uk

Not listed there. Can I just delete the folders and regedit to remove all references to McAfee?
Donna
Yes you can delete them manually or use a registry cleaner to remove registry entries of programs that already gone.

Don't forget to delete startup application that refers to Mcafee, and the Mcafee folder.
picard_uk
OK, I've run Hijack this and fixed the offending items. Removed McAfee. Re-booted and run Hijack this again. See log file and tell me the good news.

Good work :thumb:

The log you posted is clean. One antivirus is running - AVG (In case you haven't change how AVG will check for updates, kindly change it to check for updates every 1 day instead of 14 days)

You might want to reduce the # of start-ups so your system will load better. Go to http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php or http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist.htm if a start-up item is unknown to you or you want to know if it’s necessary or not to load during Windows startup.

To reduce the unnecessary services that loads in Windows - go http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm and see his guide.
