Gladiator Security Forum > Malware Help Forum > HELP! Think you are Infected?
Bunchkles
Hello, all, this is my first post here, but I have been a reading forum troll for a couple months. Reading the advice offered by you experts has helped me cure my computer numerous times, but this time I got a bug that I can not rid.

This hijacker changes my Iexplorer homepage to "about: blank" with a search page loaded, and it doesn't help to change it.

If i run Adaware it usually finds about 11 entries. I delete the entries. For a period of time (sometimes a day sometimes 5 minutes) my home page is fine, but it is eventually set back to "about: blank: and adaware finds new infections.... rinse-repeat.

Here is my lof file:

thank you all in advance and i hope you can help
LoPhatPhuud
Try this and see if it works:

First:
Please Download CoolWebShredder, from
http://www.merijn.org/files/cwshredder.zip
http://www.zerosrealm.com/downloads/CWShredder.zip

Extract CWShredder to its own folder,

Reboot in Safe Mode*** and run the program.

Click the 'Fix ->' button.

Make sure you let it fix all CWS Remnants.

Afterwards Reboot.

Second:
Update the AdAware reference file following the instructions here: http://www.lavahelp.com/howto/updref/index.html

Now do the following:
- Under Ad-aware 6 > Settings (Gear at the top) > Tweaks > Scanning Engine:
check: "Unload recognized processes during scanning."

- Under Ad-aware 6 > Settings (Gear at the top) > Tweaks > Cleaning Engine:
Check: "Let Windows remove files in use after reboot."

Press "Scan Now"
- Check option "Use Custom scanning options"
- Check option "Activate In-Depth Scan"
- Press "Select drives\folders to scan"
- Select the active partition which is usually C:

Now press "Next" to let Ad-aware scan your drives...
It will find a number of "bad" files and registry keys.
Right-click in that pane and choose "select all"

Now press "Next" again.
It will ask you whether you'd like to remove all checked items. Click OK.

Finally, close Ad-Aware, and reboot.

That ought to get rid of most of your spyware.
When you've done all that, re-run Hijack This, and post a fresh log in this thread. There will be more to do!

Note:
This method will work in some cases. In others a more complicated procedure is required.

What next?
LoPhatPhuud
Just a little cleanup and you are done!

Before we do anything, please move HiJackThis to a permanent folder. I suggest 'c:\program files\hijackthis\' but any folder other than the Desktop or a temporary folder is fine. This will allow us to use backups to restore entries if necessary

Reboot in Safe Mode* and run HiJackThis.

Check the following items in HijackThis.
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,HomeOldSP = about:blank

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {20EF6BD4-9F1D-4E18-B0D6-91CC6B71DDE6} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\ffdf.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {E4BD42D1-6C30-4F51-8CE9-3199E96A7BD9} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\hmab.dll (file missing)

Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

Reboot.

Your system is clean at last.

To reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing SpywareBlaster and SpyWareGuard and IE/Spyad if you do not already have them installed.

SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard are by JavaCool and both are free programs. SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed and consumes no system resources. SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

More info and download is available at:
SpywareBlaster: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
SpywareGuard: http://www.wilderssecurity.net/spywareguard.html

IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will several impair attempts to infect your system. It is free.

More info and download is available at:
IE/Spyad:
http://www.staff.uiuc.edu/~ehowes/resource.htm

Good luck, and thanks for coming to Gladiator Security Forums.
Bunchkles
Thanks a lot!!

I thought this did it, Everything was fine, but today it is back... I have not been on the web at all since I followed the instructions so I klnow I did not visit a page that reinstalled...

Any ideas?

I think we should kill spyware people. It would be a tradeoff for the hours of life they steal from people trying to get rid of their swill.
LoPhatPhuud
There are several steps involved in removing it and you
are going to need few tools.

Download all the following: (freeware)
'CopyLock.zip', 'Winfile.zip', from:
http://www10.brinkster.com/expl0iter/freeatlast/pvtool.htm

Registrar Lite:
http://www.resplendence.com/reglite

Install, run, copy and paste this line to reglite's address bar:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\\AppInit_DLLs

And hit the "go" tab
Find: "Appinit_Dlls" value on the right side
panel, DoubleClick, copy and post here
the following fields:
-Size:
-Value:

Post the saved log file.

Thanks LoPhat

Next, in the Same folder as Findall.bat there is a file: "RegSrch.vbs"
(note: if your get a warning from your AV, allow the script to run)

Run it, and enter this to search box:
jdi.dll
Hit ok.

Nothing would happen for a while during the search. When done, it'll open a report.
Save it as 'report.txt' file, copy and post it.

Also post a new HiJackThid log.
