Full Version: Another Norton Runtime Error
Gladiator Security Forum > Malware Help Forum > HELP! Think you are Infected?
fattdaddyj
I have the same error with Norton AV as some of the other posts I have read here.

First, Norton propmted a pip up box displaying the virus "W32.Gaebot.?" was found on my system. Since then, my email via Outlook Express does not work and Norton AV can not be accessed or modified (Email Scanning and Auto Protect). I understand that these functions are disabled due to the infection.

Second, here is my HiJackThis log:

I have had Ad Aware installed for some time on my system and did not come up with any new entries when I just ran another scan.

I had 17 detections in SpyBot S & D, which were all removed.

Can someone please send me some advice or guidelines to resolving this issue? I'll cook up a steak and throw a fiesta in your name ahah.gif

I forgot to metnion that I did get a runtime error earlier:

Runtime Error

ProgramL C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccEvtMgr.exe

LoPhatPhuud
First:
Please go here and do an AV scan at one (preferably two) of the following:
Panda's Active Scan
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/co...n_principal.htm

Trend Micro (PC-cillin) - Free on-line Scan
http://housecall.antivirus.com

RAV Antivirus Online Scan

Second:
Check the following items in HijackThis.

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://rd.yahoo.com/customize/sbcydsl/defa...hoo.sbc.com/dsl

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Microsoft Update] msawindows.exe

Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

Reboot in Safe Mode* and delete the following: (you may need to show hidden files**)
C:\WINDOWS\System32\msawindows.exe

*How to Boot into Safe mode: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen...001052409420406
**Show hidden files/folders as per the instructions here http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=190

Also, uncheck the boxes for hiding known file extensions and hiding protected operating system files. We want to see it all. When we finish here, it would be a good idea to rehide the protected operating system files but leave the rest to be shown.

Reboot.

Post another HiJackThis log in this thread for review.

Third:
To fix NAV, try this first:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.n...nav&svy=&csm=no

If the first one fails, try this:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.n...=&osv=&osv_lvl=

NAV is working properly now as well as Outlook Express. How does the log report look?

Your help is greatly appreciated!
LoPhatPhuud
Great news, your system is clean at last.

To reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing SpywareBlaster and SpyWareGuard and IE/Spyad if you do not already have them installed.

SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard are by JavaCool and both are free programs. SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed and consumes no system resources. SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

More info and download is available at:
SpywareBlaster: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
SpywareGuard: http://www.wilderssecurity.net/spywareguard.html

IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will several impair attempts to infect your system. It is free.

More info and download is available at:
IE/Spyad:
