Hi, I have the exact same problem as the person above. I can't run Norton Anti-virus, I can't get into any of the security sites, even a couple of free online virus scanners caused my computer to crash. I'm currently running the Panda scanner, but so far nothing found. I also receive the same message upon boot-up as the person who started this thread. Here is my Hijackthis log

Any suggestions or help? I've run adaware and spybot and deleted some things, but I don't think that was the cause of the problem.

-Jesse
LoPhatPhuud
Currently you show no AV product installed. For the error you were mentioning, check this link: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.n...=&osv=&osv_lvl=

Then:
Check the following items in HijackThis.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdReg] C:\WINDOWS\Updreg.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Update Service] wmipsvsc.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Update Service] wmipsvsc.exe

Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

Reboot in Safe Mode* and delete the following: (you may need to show hidden files**)
c:\windows\wmipsvsc.exe

*How to Boot into Safe mode: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen...001052409420406
**Show hidden files/folders as per the instructions here http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=190

Also, uncheck the boxes for hiding known file extensions and hiding protected operating system files. We want to see it all. When we finish here, it would be a good idea to rehide the protected operating system files but leave the rest to be shown.

Reboot.

Post another HiJackThis log in this thread for review.
jkitsune
Alright. I searched for the file the Symantec site suggests, with no luck. I fixed the things you mentioned, and rebooted in safe mode. I was unable to find c:\windows\filename.exe, but I found c:\windows\system32\filename.exe - Unsure if it was okay to delete it from that location, I left it.

After rebooting, I don't have any more problems with Norton, though I'm not sure if the entire thing was fixed (since I didn't get that file deleted). Here is the new HijackThis log, and thank you so much for your help!

-note, I showed all hidden files and whatnot. Is this more what you're looking for? :)
LoPhatPhuud
Eliminating the satrtup entry was the most important. If you can find the file agian, could you please Zip and email it to me at submit@LoPhatPhuud.com.

Do not delete it at this point.

Re NAv, I am afraid it looks like a remove and re-install. Check that link for any other information first.
jkitsune
Sure, I'll try to dig out the file again and send it. Do I need to reinstall NAV still? It seems to be working fine now - auto-protect and email-scanning are both back up, and no more error messages.
LoPhatPhuud
If its working, don't fix it!
jkitsune
Hey. Writing this from a lab computer. So, after I -said- Norton Antivirus was working, I realized it wasn't when my computer scan took 10 minutes to scan 26 files ;) So, uninstall/reinstall.

But my other problem is that now, suddenly, my internet isn't working. I was playing a game, when suddenly I lost my connection, my computer froze up, I had to reboot - and now my T3 line (I live on campus) isn't working at all. It isn't a network problem, since my peers can all use the internet fine.

Could this problem be related to my problem before? Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Jesse
Hunter
It could be and you could still be infected..it is possible your problem was a Gaobot version and you still have it or you could have picked up something else during the time your Norton was not working. Suggestions.

Post another hijackthis log from that PC..also post any list of items you find in your host file.

You also might not have gotten a complete uninstall of Norton..and your reinstallation was compromized. They do have specific proceedures to do that.

Also since your Norton missed this origiinal problem you might have to get online and then do an online scan at a site to even completley find the problem.

Also what Game were you playing online ? That might help to know.
jkitsune
Well, the logistics of posting a Hijackthis log from that computer are pretty messy right now since it has no internet access. =/ I was playing Battlefield: 1942 (Galactic Conquest) at the time.

AV has only not been working for one day, and even then the internet didn't stop working until after I'd done the hijackthis stuff yesterday - and even then it was delayed by a couple of hours.

-Jesse
jkitsune
Ok. The problem has been identified. I have been infected with one (or more) of the many worms that have recently been released to exploit vulnerabilities in windows. As a result, my internet connection has been blocked. I have a hijackthis log from my othre computer.

I don't know if you can help me with this, but if you could, I would be extremely grateful. Also, the file that LPP mentioned above I deleted (I backed it up in a RAR archive first), but it hasn't had any noticeable effects yet. I can still send it to you if you like.

I can't access any sites outside of the University network, so I can't get to any antivirus sites or anything.

Help!

Thank you,
Jesse

ps - I'm accessing this from a friend's computer. I can still receive emails at EMAIL ADDY EDITED BY FatsGordon, so you can also send instructions via that if you desire. Thank you.
