CalamityJane
Hi again, Roger,

You sure got it again.

Adaware had an update today (Ref file 01R298 20.04.2004)

Could you please update to that new Ref. file and scan again - reboot after removing whatever it finds and then scan once more with HijackThis and post a new log?

I'd like to know if it gets it now :)

To Update Adaware:
Just open Adaware and click on *Check for Updates Now* and then *Connect*. It will find a new reference-file. Click *ok* and let it download and install the updates by clicking on *Finish* .This will return you to the main screen.

Next, go to Settings (the gear icon at the top) and then *Scanning* and checkmark these items so they will be green:

Scan within archives
Scan my IE Favorites for banned URLS
Scan my hosts file

Then click *proceed* to save settings.

Click on *Tweak* next. And checkmark to make these green also:

Automatically mark all objects in result list

Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion

Click on *proceed*

Next, from the main screen, click on *Start* (lower righthand corner) and put a dot in the box next to *use Custom scanning options*, then click *Next* to start your scan.

Checkmark any items found after scanning to remove (this will actually put them in quarantine and can recover from backup if any should not be removed).

Reboot your PC after cleaning with Adaware and scan again. Repeat the process until no further items are found as bad.

Hi Calamity. Thanks for advice.

I had already updated adware and run it but had not rebooted. It found a number of malware files and registries. I downloaded adware and updated and ran it again and it only found one data miner. I rebooted and still get metsearchsoft page in the browser. However it is not putting a dozen new favourite files in the favourites and nor is it depositing them on the desk top.

Here is the current HijackThis Log

Hi Roger,

Thanks! I've sent you a Private message requesting some files by email. If you could please do that first, I can submit them to the various software developers so we can get full detection for this nasty, and that would be much appreciated by everyone!

Then, to fix up the PC you are working on

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an x in the boxes next to these items, then press *fix checked*

Hi Calamity

Thanks for the response. I have an apology to make. This idiot jumped in with both feet before reading your first instructions properly. Once I change all the settings and ran the adware 5 times it ended up clean.

However netsearchsoft still has not gone though the files you request do not seem to be in Program Files. Here is the current HijackThis Log. Sorry to have given you unneccessary work.

Regards and thanks

Roger

CalamityJane
Hi Roger,

Going by your log, let's proceed to get rid of it. You have to delete the infected file in safe mode or the fix won't work. If the file is not found, it may have been removed in a prior cleaning step, and a subsequent HJT log would show up clear.

Start your PC into SAFE MODE

How to start the computer in Safe mode
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen...src=sec_doc_nam

Delete the following files and/or folders named in bold

C:\PROGRAM FILES\TYPEBL~1\Mapi Aim Tool.exe (file) - and then delete the folder it was located in (your log did not give me whole name but it begins with TYPEBL or TYPE BL)

C:\PROGRAM FILES\TYPEBL (folder)

Reboot back into normal mode and scan once more with HijackThis and then checkmark and *fix checked* any of these items if they appear.

Reboot and scan once more with HijackThis - hopefully your next log will be clean.

Now that your PC is clean, make sure all programs are running properly and then you'll need to reset your restore point in Windows XP.......why?

One of the best features of Windows ME or XP is the System Restore option, however if a virus infects a computer with this operating system the virus can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after a virus removal.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
