Full Version: another py.exe problem!
Gladiator Security Forum > Malware Help Forum > HELP! Think you are Infected?
kriesdoggy
I've scoured the forums, and applied nearly every tip people have had for the py problem, yet nothing has helped.

I have been getting the pop-ups from Norton telling me that I have a trojan, located in various content.ie5\ folders, I've tried to delete it and it appears again in system32, and a startup line, c:\windows\system32\ dumprep -0, appears.

I have Ad-aware, Spybot and SpywareBlaster, among other things (Norton 04, firewalled)

Here's my Log, thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi kriesdoggy Wave.gif

Please clear your cache (empty your Temporary internet folder) to stop those alerts re the py.exe, but some infected content probably remains in the webpages you have in the TIF folder, which is what your AV is alerting you on. It may also find some infected files in your System Restore, which we will fix by resetting the restore point once your PC is all clean. Some nasties remain that are running we need to fix as well.

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an x in the boxes next to these items, then press *fix checked*

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =

(*Fix* this item only if you did not set it yourself)
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = localhost

.................................
Reboot your PC and scan again with HijackThis. Post a new log please and let us know if you still have symtoms of infection.

If you are still getting alerts from Norton, we need to know the file names and exact location (full path please) to advise on how to fix those.
kriesdoggy
I did what you told me, and this is the log after restart. Thanks again, Calamity.

CalamityJane
You log looks good ahah.gif

Any more alerts from NAV since you cleared out the TIF folder?

You also need to reset your System Restore......why?

One of the best features of Windows ME or XP is the System Restore option, however if a virus infects a computer with this operating system the virus can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after a virus removal.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

No new NAV alerts. I did the system restore, as described.
I guess I'll let you know if there are any more problems. Thank you very much for all your help. Sorry about Wild Bill.
