Hi. I have the following problem. I just recently got my son's computer back from college. It is running XP Home Edition. It exhibits the following behavior:

dbl-clicking "My Computer" will make the icons on the desktop disappear and reappear only. Nothing else seems to happen.

dlbj-clicking Internet Explorer (6.0 SP1) will cause everything to disappear (except for the background) for a few seconds while it reloads the start bar and system tray programs and the icons on the desktop.
However, using start->run and typing in programs will let me use programs. Using browse or cmd will allow me access to the hard drive.

I've tried the following steps:
1) Reload Windows XP from the CD (using the repair option, not the recovery console option.)
2) Ran Spybot
3) Ran Adaware
4) Un-installed Norton Antivirus.
5) Loaded and ran PC-Cillin.
6) Updated pattern files and ran PC-Cillin. 1 virus was found. This was quarantined.
<<I believe this is when the internet connection started working again through programs but not using IE.>>
7) Installed netscape 7.1 (using cd-roms to xfer files). Starting the install using the internet for the rest of the files. Netscape 7.1 works. It is what I'm using to enter this message.
8) Used Netscape to download IE6 SP1.
9) Used registry to tell windows XP that IE6 wasn't installed.
10) Re-installed IE 6 SP1..
11) reran Windows repair from the CD.
<<Here there was not much change.>>
12) ran msconfig where I found out that in safe mode, I could double-click My Computer and have it work correctly.
13) Tried to use msconfig to uncheck startup files. This does not seem to survive a reboot. There are many of these files.
<<So, now I feel like I've done several hours of work for nothing. I'm basically in the same position as I was when I started.
14) Ran HiJack to get a log.

Hoping you'll be able to help.

Here it is:

Thanks for any consideration you can give. I'm going to sign off and try not to think about this for awhile. :-)
LoPhatPhuud
Try entering these command and see if they restore IE and Explorer
Start-->Run-->regsvr32 urlmon.dll
Start-->Run-->regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll
Start-->Run-->regsvr32 Msjava.dll
Start-->Run-->regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
Start-->Run-->regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
Start-->Run-->regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
Start-->Run-->regsvr32 Browseui.dll
Start-->Run-->regsvr32 Shell32.dll

Then, using msconfig, remove the checks from all entries you have turned off, reboot, run HiJackThis again and post the new log in this thread.

Thanks for your response.

Ran the regsvr32 Ccommands. Ran msconfig and removed all check marks, rebooted, ran HiJackThis again.

Same thing happened with ie explorer and My Computer. (flashing screen; no windows appeared.)

Reran msconfig and saw that all the checkmarks were back. I'm going to try that part again (removing all checkmarks). If I don't post, then assume it did the same thing.

Dang, its hard to tell if we are making progress or not, but a lot more is to be seen.

First:
You have the latest version of the RapidBlaster foistware.
I suggest you do the following, in that order:
First,  download and run Javacool's RapidBlaster killer : http://www.wilderssecurity.net/downloads/rbkiller.exe
Launch the program and hit the Scan button.
RBKiller will find any RapidBlaster variants on your system, kill the process, delete the Registry Run entry, and remove the file itself.

Then:
Check the following items in HijackThis.

Well, thank you. My Computer and Internet Explorer are finally working again! I also reran Spybot and Adaware which found more things to delete and I deleted them. Strange cause I haven't been on the web except to Microsoft and here.

Well, I've gotten rid of CosmoPopupBlocker as recommended. I take it that it isn't a good popup blocker to use?

What is a good popup blocker to use if you don't mind me asking your opinion?

HI boothbyd,

Did you run the Rapid Blaster remove that I specified in my previous post?

I ask because this entry still exists:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [rbenh 6l8061] "C:\Program Files\RBEnhance\rbenh.exe"

If you did, then run HiJackThis

Check this item:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [rbenh 6l8061] "C:\Program Files\RBEnhance\rbenh.exe"

Click on 'Fixed Checked'

Then Reboot.

Your system will be clean once the Rapid Blaster infection is removed.

For a popup blocker, I suggest the Google toolbar. It is free, it works, and it's what I use.
boothbyd
Sorry. I forgot to say that I ran the rapidblaster removal program. It did remove it, but not the one entry. I removed that through hijackthis.

Thanks for all your help. I do appreciate it.

I still have some security patches to download and install, but I think I got it from here.

Here is the latest HIJackThis log for a last look (I hope. :-)):
