Full Version: py.exe is kicking my butt
Gladiator Security Forum > Malware Help Forum > HELP! Think you are Infected?
kennethwr
Think I've been infected with py.exe and am having trouble dis-infecting. Norton AV doesn't seem to remove it, nor does adaware or spybot, but on occasion NAV will detect it. I seem to have removed most of the problem by following instructions on the many posts about py.exe, but now at bootup the system32 folder opens in windows explorer, so I think I''ve still got some remnants hanging around :( . Below is my hijackthis log.

Reboot into Safe Mode and delete the following: (you may need to show hidden files**)
C:\WINDOWS\System32\lfwucx.exe

**Show hidden files/folders as per the instructions here http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=190

Also, uncheck the boxes for hiding known file extensions and hiding protected operating system files. We want to see it all. When we finish here, it would be a good idea to rehide the protected operating system files but leave the rest to be shown.

Reboot. (not necessary, but recommended)

Post another HiJackThis log in this thread for final review.

Thanks LoPhatPhuud :thumb: ,
Did as instructed on removing 2 items with hijackthis. Upon reboot I was not able to locate the file C:\WINDOWS\System32\lfwucx.exe . Here's my new hijackthis log.

There are some processes you can stop from happening with win XP that most home users do not need with a program called xpantispy. It is a set and forget, with all setting reverseable with a nice GUI (Graphic User Interface)

******************************

http://www.xp-antispy.org/

What is XP-AntiSpy?

XP-AntiSpy is a little utility that let's you disable some built-in update and authetication 'features' in WindowsXP.
For example, there's a service running in the background wich is called 'Automatic Updates'. I don't know what this service transfers from my machine to other machines on the internet, especially the MS ones. So I play it safe and disable such functions. If you like, you can even disable these function manually, by going through the System and checking or unchecking some checkboxes. This will take you approximately half an hour. But why wasting time when a little neat utility can do the same in 1 minute? This utility was successfully tested by lots of users, and was found to disable all the known 'Suspicious' Functions in WindowsXP. It's customizeable, but comes up with the Default settings, which are recommended. If you like to get more information about those 'functions',read THIS.

This utility is FREEWARE! This means, you dont have to pay anything for this program and you can give it to anyone who's interested in, as long as you don't sell it. If you find this tool useful, and wanna gimme something back, then click on my sponsors.
Thanks.

Important information: The Domains www.xp-antispy.de und www.xpantispy.de do not belong to the project xp-AntiSpy anymore. The new owner offers only a dialer to download.
Please update any links and your bookmarks to www.xp-antispy.org

Then many people find it hard to clean out some of the folders that are left filled with junk and just grow and grow each time you use the PC so one of our members created this program called cleancache. Nice thing about it is the fact it cleans out many of the folders that Antivirus products are now finding dialers and other exploits that it can Identify but not clean.

CleanCache 2.11 - New freeware IE 6/XP Cleaner, Introducing my new program

And on that issues everyone with winXP and that famous System Restore folder..should realize this info and take action each time they are infected with malware so they start fresh again and never end up reinfecting their PC if the function is needed.

What is System Restore?

One of the new features of Windows Me and Windows XP is System Restore. This feature, which is enabled by default, is used by Windows to restore files on your computer in case they become damaged. If you experience a problem with your system that is caused by software, System Restore gives you the opportunity to go back to a point where things were working correctly.

Windows XP stores this information in the SYSTEM VOLUME information folder. These folders are updated when the computer restarts.

NOTE: Both the _RESTORE folder in WinME and the System volume information folder in Win XP are marked with the hidden attribute, and, by default, Windows is set to not display such files or folders.

Even after you have found a virus and your AV has cleaned your PC you still might get an indication you still have the virus but it can not be deleted in these folders.

Problem is..the system restore also has a copy of all those virus and trojans that have infected your system. They are in a compressed mode...your ANTIVIRUS knows they are there but can not help you get rid of them, so you must do it manually.

GO TO THE FIRST LINK AND FOLLOW THE SCREEN SHOTS TO GET RID OF THIS IN THE "SYSTEM VOLUME" INFO FOLDER THE SECOND LINK WILL DO IT FOR WIN ME IN THE "_RESTORE FOLDER".

NAME: Disabling System Restore on Windows ME

after you do this reboot and then go back and reverse the process to turn it back on.

LoPhatPhuud will also have some suggestion for you on real time prevention some of that junk from even getting on your PC in the first place..so if you are serious about saving some time and headaches in the future. Do the work now. Nothing we give you to install will slow you down :)

My computer is still infected. :( Must have missed deleting a file somewhere and now it came back. Norton AV still detects it as py[1].exe. I see that py.exe has reappeared in the system32 folder. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks kennethwr,

That file is a new one and seems to be giving problems. Could you please make a copy of it and Zip it then email it to me (py.exe). I will PM you with the email address.

Then using the Task Manager check the running processes, if py.exe is there, kill the process then delete the file. Id successfull that may give an error no boot when the file is missing, but we can fix that later.

Then in HiJackThis:

Check the following items in HijackThis.
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {977102B0-04ED-23DE-0FB1-B2EDB5ADBEBC} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\dhlhtshs.dll

Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked.

Then use HiJackThis to produce a Startup List and post it in this thread.
1. From HJT main screen, click 'Config' button

2. Click 'Misc Tools' button

3. Under 'Generate StartupList Log' button, check both boxes

4. Click 'Generate StartupList Log' button

5. Click 'Yes' in the next dialog

6. Save the log and post a copy in this thread.

I have the py.exe file, thanks. I will submit it for evaluation and let you know when I get an answer.

I can find no trace of it in the Startup log. Were you able to kill the process and delete it??

An initial examination showed that it is run-time packed in such a way as to make examination difficult. Somebody does not want this looked at!
LoPhatPhuud
Ken,

Still no answer but a wy to remove it! Here are the instructions. After this you should be clean.

Steps to removal:
(note: you may need to disable your antivirus prior to this because it is a VBS)
1 - Run updated Ad-Aware to remove IELoader
2 - Go to your Internet Settings Control Panel
3 - Click "General" tab
4 - Click "Settings" under "Temporary Internet Files" area
5 - Click "View Objects"
6 - If an item called "DownloadUL" exists, right click it, and click "Remove"
7 - Close all windows.
8 - Highlight and Copy all the text below between the "============" lines
9 - Open notepad
10 - Paste the copied text into notepad
11 - Save the file to your desktop as a .vbs file
12 - Double click the newly created file on your desktop and step through each prompted step. Be sure to read the alerts for instructions.
13 - Reboot.

Thanks so much for your help. I gave up and reformatted the drive and have spent the last day re-installing windows, updates, drivers, and applications. I've saved the vbs script if I should get re-infected. At this time the py.exe infection that I had, seems to be gone.
