Hi. I was recommended to you guys for some help

Recently after a virus check i discovered a the trojan horse Dialer.6.G and Dialer.6.I. I have tried everything i can to get rid of it but AVG refuses to do it even with system restore off and in safe mode.
I cant find the virus manually to delete it.
When searching the websites looking for a solution ive found out i should also be running spyware programs. Since then ive now got Spyware Blaster and AdAware.
Ive also got zonealarm.
However i was hoping if you help me to remove this virus then you could also help me configure my computer to ensure it is safe from further viruses and pests.
I have inserted my Log for your perusal.

Thanks a million
Aaron.

LoPhatPhuud
Hello Aaron,

First:
You Have a CoolWebSearch Infection.

Please Download CoolWebShredder, from http://www.zerosrealm.com/downloads/CWShredder.zip
http://www.computercops.biz/downloads-file-329.html
http://downloads.net-integration.net/CWShredder.exe
Extract CWShredder to its own folder and run the program.

Click the 'Fix ->' buitton.

Make sure you let it fix all CWS Remnants.

Next:
Download the latest version of Ad-Aware at
http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/

After installing AAW, and before running the program, you NEED to FIRST update the reference file following the instructions here: http://www.lavahelp.com/howto/updref/index.html

Now do the following:
- Under Ad-aware 6 > Settings (Gear at the top) > Tweaks > Scanning Engine:
check: "Unload recognized processes during scanning."

- Under Ad-aware 6 > Settings (Gear at the top) > Tweaks > Cleaning Engine:
Check: "Let Windows remove files in use after reboot."

Press "Scan Now"
- Check option "Use Custom scanning options"
- Check option "Activate In-Depth Scan"
- Press "Select drives\folders to scan"
- Select the active partition which is usually C:

Now press "Next" to let Ad-aware scan your drives...
It will find a number of "bad" files and registry keys.
Right-click in that pane and choose "select all"

Now press "Next" again.
It will ask you whether you'd like to remove all checked items. Click OK.

Finally, close Ad-Aware, and reboot.

That ought to get rid of most of your spyware.
When you've done all that, restart your computer, re-run Hijack This, and post a fresh log in this thread..
There will be more to do!
Aaron1399
Ok Thanks

I shall do all this then get back to you's with the results.

Thanks Again
Aaron.
Aaron1399
Hello

I have done everything you said and here is an updated log.
AdAware seemed to have cleaned a lot.

Thanks
Aaron.

Post another HiJackThis log in this thread for final review.

Also, You NEED to upgrade to IE 6.0 SP1 http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downlo...sp1/default.asp
(Make sure you get the correct language version for your operating system! ).

Next, go to the Windows Update site, and download and install ALL Critical Updates on offer.
That will fix innumerable bugs, update a large number of important system files, and plug many security holes.

C:\PROGRA~1\-- The nicest hobby on Earth ;) --XXP~1\ <-- entire folder, even with all hidden files shown. I also tries a search for -- The nicest hobby on Earth ;) --X and nothing came up.
Also AVG still finds the dialer viruses.
Am i right in saying AdAware and SpywareBlaster run in the background continuosly?

Here is my next Hijack This log.

Thanks again
Aaron.

Hey Arron.

let me talk to you about this puppy :)

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SSDPSRV.EXE

That thing is this...

By connecting to a computer running Ssdpsrv you are able to crash the
Ssdpsrv server.

Ssdpsrv.exe is the file that starts the UPnP server on WindowsME boxes.
This service comes standard with the WindowsME installation.

The Ssdpsrv.exe server is started at boot.
Here is the registry entry:
KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersoin\RunServices
Here is the file that starts the server:
c:\windows\system\ssdpsrv.exe

For information about UPnP go here:
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/ar...s/Q262/4/58.ASP

SO read this..

This is explorer utilising the Simple Services Discovery Protocol to broadcast messages across your LAN in order for it to find devices to communicate with. These broadcasts are related to the Universal Plug and Play which is described by Microsoft KB article no: Q262458 as:

'an architecture in Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me), and Microsoft Windows XP, that supports peer-to-peer Plug and Play functionality for network devices. The UPnP specification is designed to simplify device and network service installation and management. UPnP accomplishes device and service discovery and control through a driver-less, standards-based protocol mechanisms. Universal Plug and Play devices can auto-configure network addressing, announce their presence on a network subnet, and enable the exchange of descriptions device and service descriptions. A Windows Me or a Windows XP computer can act as a UPnP control point to discover and control the devices through a web or application interface.

You can install ( Universal Plug and Play support in Windows Me, and Windows XP, by using Add and Remove Programs in Control Panel. When Universal Plug and Play support is installed, and a Universal Plug and Play device is added to the network, the Windows-based computer acts as a control point for that device, and notification is provided on the taskbar that a new device is available. '

More Upnp-specific information, vulnerabilities, (and a utility to completely disable Upnp) can be found on Steve Gibson's site here: http://grc.com/unpnp/unpnp.htm Hope this helps.
*****************

stop that thing from running and maybe your dialer problem will go away and i am surprised your firewall is not crying out.

Post another HiJackThis log in this thread for final review.

Aaron, AVG may be hitting in the restore file. It needs to be cleaned. Here are the instructions:

One of the best features of Windows ME is the System Restore option, however if a virus infects a computer with this operating system the virus can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after a virus removal.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows ME)
To disable System Restore:
1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the Performance tab, click File System, or press ALT+F.
3. On the Troubleshooting tab, click to select the Disable System Restore check box.
4. Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
5. To re-enable System Restore, follow steps 1-3, but in step 3, click to clear the Disable System Restore check box.

How to Enable and Disable System Restore (Windows ME)

Ok

I downloaded all the windows update files and installed them. I have still to do explorer. (Shall do this overnight tonight)

I have disabled the SSDPSRV.EXE using the utility from one of the links you provided as I do not believe I need this progrom to be running. I also changed my Zonealarm to higher security settings.

Since then i have disabled Restore and done a virus scan in safe mode. Again the virus is still detected but cannot be removed or healed.

I have checked the mentioned items in Hijackthis. and below is another copy of my log.

Thanks
Aaron

However i am having problems installing as it stops midway through.
I am going to look for some advice from the site i got the download from but if you have any ideas could you please let me know.

Thank you
Aaron

Aaron, your log is clean. I find no trace of a dialer there and am at loss as to why AVG is detecting one. Try this online scan and see what it produces:
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp

Then use HiJackThis to produce a Startup List. We will try to see if something is hiding from us.

1. From HJT main screen, click 'Config' button

2. Click 'Misc Tools' button

3. Under 'Generate StartupList Log' button, check both boxes

4. Click 'Generate StartupList Log' button

5. Click 'Yes' in the next dialog

6. Save the log and post a copy in this thread.

Finally, cut and paste the follwing into the Address Bar of Internet Explorer and post the result along with the other information requested:

java script:navigator.userAgent
Aaron1399
I done the online virus scan and it turned out nothing. However when scanning an AVG Resident Shield screen came up (A DOS type screen with Blue background Red Foreground. It stated the two viruses and asked to Enable / Disable access or Heal. I pressed heal instictively. After this the online scan continued and completed its search.
I checked Downloaded Program Files again with AVG thinking the problem was solved but unfortunately the viruses were still present.
Could this maybe be a flaw with my AVG scan?

I use the explorer i get with BTyahoo for browsing on the internet so i was not sure whether i should have typed 'java script:navigator.userAgent' into this or the actual internet explorer so i done both.

With Internet explorer this came up
Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.5; Windows 98; Win 9x 4.90; BTinternet V8.4; YPC 3.0.2)

With BT yahoo the BTyahoosearch site came up with no results.

and finally
Here is the Startup List

REM Notes:
REM DOSSTART.BAT is run whenenver you choose "Restart the computer
REM in MS-DOS mode" from the Shutdown menu in Windows. It allows
REM you to load programs that you might not want loaded in Windows,
REM (because they have functional equivalents) but that you do
REM want loaded under MS-DOS. The two primary candidates for
REM this are MSCDEX and a real mode driver for the mouse you ship
REM with your system. Commands that you want present in both Windows
REM and MS-DOS should be placed in the Autoexec.bat in the
REM \Image directory of your reference server. Please note that for
REM MSCDEX you will need to load the corresponding real-mode CD
REM driver in Config.sys. This driver won't be used by Windows 98
REM but will be available prior to and after Windows 98 exits.
REM
REM This file is also helpful if you want to F8 boot into MS-DOS 7.0
REM before Windows loads and access the CD-ROM. All you have to do
REM is press F8 and then run DOSSTART to load MSCDEX and your real
REM mode mouse driver (no need to remember the command line parameters
REM for these two files.
REM
REM - You MUST explicitly specify the CD ROM Drive Letter for MSCDEX.
REM - The string following the /D: statement must explicitly match
REM the string in CONFIG.SYS following your CD-ROM device driver.

THanks Aaron, the Startup log is clean also.

The issue with AVG may be a false positive but I can find nothing in the HJT log and the Startup log to indicate a problem. It may indeed be a false positive.

It would appear we are done here so I am going to close this thread. If you need it re-opened, PM one of the Mods or Admins.

Thanks for coming to GSF.
Hunter
Aaron I have a thought..do you in fact have the latest version of AVG or an old one ? Or is it possible that you did not uninstall the old one after you installed the new?

What version does it say you have at this time ?

Thanks

also what is this

C:\WINDOWS\TSC.EXE ????

http://www.bytecool.com/command_line.htm
Aaron1399
Ok Guys

Im going to update AVG and explorer. I will uninstall the old AVG(version6.0643) also. I should be able to sort this out myself. Im pretty sure the virus does not pose a threat and its a false positive. If not i may be in touch.

TSC.exe came from the online virus scan site trendmicro. I think it is some sort of cleanup program to get rid of infected files. I dont think it will cause any probs. If you think different please let me know and i will delete it.

Thanks very much for all your help and also making me aware of just how unsafe the internet is. I had no idea before of all the threats. I will now make sure all my spyware, antivirus and windows is kept up to date.

Thanks again.
