Hi all,

You guys did such a great job helping Kathy out that I feel very confident turning to you all for help with my dilemma. After months of having a seemingly smooth-running computer, my comp. contracted the Sec Thought.B "virus" as well (yesterday). And like Kathy I was using AVG (free edition) which wasn't equipped to remove this malady.
After Reading through the Excellent step-by-step process Jane and others posted on this subject, I followed the directions..downloaded winzip, hijackthis,etc..and just got my Logfile copied. (Listed below)
I would Greatly Appreciate any and all advice/help that you could give me on how to rid my computer of this problem that is seriously slowing down any use of it.
Thank you all so much for any advice you can give.
Johnny

Hi johnny408,

Wecome to the forum flowerz.gif

I will split your post and my reply off into a new topic of your own (so Kathy isn't getting emails on replies to this thread that don't apply to her problem).

You've got quite a collection of malware there. Some precleaning with some special tools will be necessary so please follow my instructions in this order:

1. Download and run this free tool to remove RapidBlaster
RapidBlaster Killer 1.61 from here:
http://www.wilderssecurity.net/specialinfo/rapidblaster.html

or (direct download)
http://www.wilderssecurity.net/downloads/rbkiller.exe

QUOTE
Removal Problems/Tools: Since RapidBlaster will "morph" itself whenever it detects an uninstallation attempt, removal with current anti-spyware software may not be successful.

We have created a unique tool, RapidBlaster Killer, that can scan all running programs, detect RapidBlaster, and successfully terminate the process and remove the Run key registry entry. The newest version can also clean up various RapidBlaster remnants.

RapidBlaster Killer 1.61 - updated December 16, 2003 (mirrored by SpywareInfo)

RapidBlaster Killer will create a log file named "scanlog.txt" in the same folder as "rbkiller.exe" if RapidBlaster is detected, and will notify the user of the file path/location (plus any other actions that took place during optional clean up).

RapidBlaster Killer can now clean up various RapidBlaster remnants after a successful process termination!

2. Reboot after cleaning with RBKiller

3. Download Adaware (get the free edition)
http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/

After download and installing first, please update the program important to get the updates first before scanning Just open Adaware and click on *Check for Updates Now* and then *Continue*. Let them download and install......then press the *Scan now* button. Let it fix what it finds.

Reboot your PC after cleaning with Adaware and scan again. Repeat the process until no further items are found as bad.

.......................................................
4. Next
Download Spybot Search and Destroy
http://www.safer-networking.org/

How to Use Spybot
(click on the Tutorial link at the top in the program)

How to Update Spybot
http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?...o&detail=update
1. Click on 'Online' in the navigation bar,
2. Click on 'Update',
3. Search for available updates,
4. Select ALL available updates,
5. Select a download location nearest to you,
6. Download the selected updates.
Updates will be installed without any further action needed.

Next, close all Internet Explorer windows, hit 'Check for Problems', and have SpyBot remove/fix all it finds that are in RED
............................
Now, please reboot once more. Scan again with HijackThis and post a fresh log back here to see what remains.

Hi Jane,

Thanks so much for trying to help me with my computer malady.
I am trying to follow your instructions step by step but am needing a little clarification. I downloaded and installed the free version of Ad Aware 6.0 and ran the update to get the newest one.

I ran both the Scan Now and the System Scan (is that right?)
But under "Scanning Results"...there are all of these "VENDORS"
(Xupiter, Alexa, Possible Browser Hijack Attempt, Clear Search, IBIS Toolbar,Lycos Sidesearch, VX2 BetterInternet, WildTangent, Searchbar Cash, Second Thought, as well as lots of "Tracking Cookies".

The 'TYPES' are: Process, RegKey, RegValue, RegData, File and lastly Folder.

The 'CATEGORIES' are: 95% "Data Miner"....with some "Misc" and a few "Malwares": "IstBar, RapidBlaster, & Searchbar Cash"

The 'OBJECTS' say "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT" to start out with, followed by lots of other jibberish-looking stuff.....whereas the tracking cookies have an "OBJECT" of 'c:\documents and setting\......etc.

****None of them are Automatically Checked in the Object Box...therefore...I'm not sure which if any Boxes I need to Check...and "Quarantine"/Remove.****

Do I Check and Quarantine All 500+ Items that showed up under Scanning Results..or what...?

****I Saved the Ad-aware 6.0 Logfile..buts its MUCH Longer than my Hijack Logfile..so I dare not copy and paste that here.

I look forward to the next step....(as my computer is going about 1/2 the speed it was 2 days ago and I constantly get error message boxes popping up telling me i have a Trojan Horse named Sec. Thought B. )...Plus...all of a sudden I'm getting all these "INSTALL This By Clicking Yes.." Type of Boxes! Grrrr...

Thanks So Much!

Johnny

Hi Johnny,

First, did you run the RapidBlasterKiller? I recommend doing that one first since it is specialized cleaning for that parasite which is particularly difficult to remove (and manual removal or removing with a different tool is not the best method).

Next, Yes, I expected a large return of spyware in your Adaware scan results. All of those are *bad*. They should be checkmarked for you when you get to the Scan results. If they are not go ahead and mark them for remove. Adaware will actually quanatine them first in case something gets removed that causes a problem, we can recover it from quarantine :)

You should see Reference file: 01R268 14.03.2004 loaded (that means you have the latest update)

Look at the instructions and screenshots posted here for the recommended settings:
Adaware Tutorial Updates & Scanning
http://forum.gladiator-antivirus.com/index...?showtopic=8050

This should help you with your questions.

It may take several scans with a reboot after each to make sure Adaware gets everything. This means not just logging off and back on again but a full restart of your system. Having it set to remove items on reboot takes care of the bad processes before they can start up. So you have to scan again to get rid of the rest sometimes.

Once you are all clean with Adaware, odds are that Spybot will find more. Again, I have some help instructions posted here:
Spybot Tutorial, For First Time Use & Scan
http://forum.gladiator-antivirus.com/index...?showtopic=8630

Those 3 programs (RBKiller, Adaware, Spybot) will remove most of what is killing your PC. Any remainders we can remove using HijackThis, but I would like to get all the junk precleaned off of there first since they are more efficient.

Once we are done, I can assure you your PC will be running much better again, if not like new, but it takes some time to get through all the steps.

Hi Jane,

Sorry to respond so late as I tend to work long hours...and just to come home this lovely problem..lol....But Thanks SO Much for all your help!
Well...I did run RapidBlasterKiller...and it said there were no problems in less than 20 seconds. I have run AdAware many times now..and there are still some "OBJECTS" Recognized each time..but not even 10 each time...as opposed to the many of before..i have rebooted every time as well. I'm also still a little confused as to how to use the "Advanced Settings" for these programs in order to get the utmost out of their effectiveness.
I Ran SpyBot and rebooted continually many times ..and it finally seems like there are only 1 or 2 things found each time...one time even...ZERO Items were found to remove.
Lastly...I just Ran HiJackthis and here is my Logfile. (below)
Thanks Again and I look forward to checking back tomorrow.
Take Care.

Johnny

Hi Johnny,

It's looking much better flowerz.gif

The Help sections in each of those programs (Adaware and Spybot) are very useful and well written if you want to explore the advanced settings. For now, the default settings will suffice to get rid of the important items.

There is one suspicious item in your log that I would like to get a copy of as it appears to be something new. I've sent you a Private Message here to ask for it and provide my email address to send it to so I can get it analyzed. Please check your Messages at the top of this forum :)

To fix the final items appearing in your log, please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an x in the boxes next to these items, then press *fix checked*

Reboot your PC

Delete this file:

Hi Jane,

Thank You So Very Much for All of the Advice!
I do notice my computer running more smoothly..not to mention a lack of any of those constantly popping up "Trojan Horse-Virus Boxes".
The one item you had in question was installed so I didn't check that box. The rest I think I got almost all save one. I wasn't able to find the aupdate.exe file on System 32 whatsoever.
I even tried to run a Start---Search--for that file..but nothing found

Here's my latest logfile.
Is there anything else I need to do?
Should I run updated Adaware and Spybot every 3-4 days?
Also, is it worth it to keep using the Free Edition of AVG 6.0 for Windows?

Thanks Again!
Johnny
