The latest version of Adaware is Adaware SE Personal 1.06r1

You can download the free version here:
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/

or here (alternate download location)
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download506.html

You need to be logged on as Adminstrator through the installation.

Just download it to your desktop and then to install click on the file you just downloaded (aawsepersonal.exe). You will be guided through the installation and when presented with the screen here, leave it on the default setting of "Protect anyone who uses this computer"

Edit Note: Updated Ad-Aware SE Version number. All instructions are still the same.

At the end of the installation you will be presented with this screen and these options pre-checked for you. This will give you the option to Update the definition files (recommended) and do a System Scan now (recommended); and open the Help file now (optional). Make sure those are checked and click on *Finish*. You will then see your update and scan begin.

On the main screen of Adaware please look for the *check for updates now* link, just above the start button in the bottom right corner or you can click on the Webupdate button that looks like a globe icon at the top. Press * connect* to let it check for any recent updates. If any are found, please let it download and install them.

Now, configure your settings. Click the gear icon at the top. These are the recommended settings:

AAW SE settings

General Button
Safety:
Check (Green) all three.

Advanced Button
Logfile Detail Level:
All options under this should be checked (Green).

Tweak Button
Check (Green) the following:
Log Files
Include basic Ad-Aware settings in logfile:
Include additional Ad-Aware settings in logfile:
Please do not check (Green): Include Module list in logfile:

On your first scan, using the Full Scan (Perform full system scan) mode.

At the end of your scan there will be a (very funny) sound  and you will see a summary of the results and click on *next* to see a screen like this with a full list of any *bad* files (Critical Objects) found to be checkmarked for fixing.

If there are a lot of items listed and you want to checkmark all of them it is easiest to right click on the results screen and choose *Select all objects*. This will place a checkmark next to all the items listed.

Note: It is perfectly safe to checkmark all items as any bad files removed are placed in quarantine. Should there be a file you need to retrieve or find that you did not want removed, you can always restore the file from quarantine :)

Rightclick on any item listed in the Scanning Results screen gives you the option to view more details and a description, plus other options you may find helpful.

After checkmarking all items to fix, click on the *next* button and you will get a confirmation to remove all items (say *ok*)

When you are finished removing the bad objects, Adaware SE will take you back to the main screen. If a reboot is required to remove some items, please do that now.

On the main screen of Adaware please look for the *check for updates now* link, just above the start button in the bottom right corner or you can click on the Webupdate button that look like a globe icon at the top. Press * connect* to let it check for any recent updates. If any are found, please let it download and install them and then scan again to see if any new bad items are found.

Adaware updates frequently, sometimes several times a week, so always check for updates before each and every scan

Just a couple follow-up questions:

1. When you run the Webupdate feature to get the current reference file, does the reference file that is loaded include all information from previous reference files? Or do you need to go back and load each past reference file individually?

2. Are there specific items that may be quaranteened that might affect certain "desirable" programs from running properly? What has been your experience with this? Which potentially "desirable" programs might be affected by the quaranteening process? If there are some of these, what specific components might you want to restore to get these programs to run correctly again? (Obviously, each person might have their own opinion of what programs are "desirable". Please try to be open-minded here when addressing this question.)

Thanks.

YES

>Are there specific items that may be quaranteened that might affect certain "desirable" programs from running properly?

YES some..but you must decided which ones by putting a check in the ones you do want to get rid of ..and even then they are backed up to replace..so make sure you do read all the info you can on each.

back to finish this later unless some one else does
